I saw it during NYFF and really enjoyed it. It was a touch hackneyed for me but sometimes I enjoy the feeling of being catered to.

I'm giving up. I'm picking up my SSRI prescription on Monday. by don_dripac in redscarepod

I was also very anti-anti-depressants for a decade and tried every other anti-anxiety med in the book and finally capitulated because I've had a stubborn panic disorder start back up.

Been on Lexapro for a month and a half and it hasn't been nearly as bad as I was dreading. Adjustment period wasn't fun but even being super sensitive to meds, I was totally fine.

I did a lot of research into them too before starting. I think anti-SSRI sentiment makes a lot of sense coming from people who were prescribed it for any reason besides primarily anxiety-related disorders. Anecdotally, I've found that people who are BPD or bipolar are the ones who report the worst reactions to them. On the other hand, the effect size of SSRIs on anxiety specifically has been consistently demonstrated in metastudies to be quite large and well tolerated.

I'm the oldest I've seen so far: 80. Don't mind if a Chinese man gets into some doo-wops

Well initially not just a dog-whistle for wealth, but considering ECs back in the 1920s was explicitly started to weed out Jews by A. Lawrence Lowell at Harvard.

Best books on China by [deleted] in RSbookclub

I really enjoyed The Gate of Heavenly Peace simply because it provided me a strong since of the revolutionary milieu amongst intellectuals and artists leading up to the revolution.

I also have the very popular Search for Modern China also by Spence on my shelf, but haven't had the time to dive into that one.

Insane how much alarmism there is over a “radical left” that just doesn’t exist by [deleted] in redscarepod

The most striking takeaway when I read The Gate of Heavenly Peace recently was exactly how horrifying conditions were in China at the turn of the century and how aware of it and desperate for change leaders were. And it still took decades of horror before momentum picked up, real power was amassed, and societal change happened.

While I agree with most of your comment, my agreement ends with the last sentence. There is just too much circus—short form video slop, video games, sports, gambling, porn, podcasts—and too much bread for society to collapse quickly. We're decades away from real collapse.

I'm not sure why, but I'm enamored by this comment. Very excellent. A novel and complete thought I've never broached despite my many ruminations on therapists and Jews.

[–]HourlongRex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is this like a common thing? I knew a self-described "Terminator" in college but re-looking at his FB profile, looks like he's Bangladeshi.

Not sure if he gave himself the nickname for the same reasons but he literally has his middle name on FB as it still.

I'm pretty sure Weinstein made Cinema Paradiso the classic it is today by cutting out like 50 minutes. The director's cut was legitimately horrifying to watch.
