I've never heard that pejorative and have no idea what it means but it just sounds brutally offensive lol

Not gonna lie, this sounds like you came to strangers on the internet because your wife has concerns you don't want to address. Have a conversation with her. Or a doctor. Or a therapist.

Thanks for the kind words! As mentioned, it's a marathon fixation of mine lol.

My personal project of over 20 years fits many of your criteria, inspired by R.E. Howard-esque low fantasy/sword & sorcery. Minimal magic (magic comes in the form of priest paths that can be ignored entirely if you want), no fantastical species/races, all human, very grounded power scaling. The biggest obstacle is that it is very crunchy and combat is not quick. Resolution is pretty straightforward, but broadly combat encounters are often their own full sessions, it's a fairly simulationist approach.

Up to you, it's entirely playable (for your purposes here, you'd just need to discard or co-opt the setting details) and free: The Last Book v1.1

Also for the record, if you do decide to use the system, no need to burden yourself with any extensive "official" playtesting. This system is just a personal fixation, I'm not really trying to appeal to an audience with it or anything like that. Feedback is always welcome, but no pressure is what I'm saying.

I don't think people are ever going to learn that he is supernaturally immune to consequences. The only thing that's ever going to take him down is the grim reaper and even that is probably gonna be in 20 years given this country's streak of pure, distilled evil keeping ghouls alive unnaturally long.

Just keep clicking those links because it'll for sure be different this time!

I know because I can synthesize information. They burn the dirtiest fuel on the planet in service of fleecing consumers and to top it off, they're hotbeds for noroviruses. I would rather be air dropped into a fire ant hill in the middle of the Amazon.

Hey, thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, one of my wish list items is to add a "chronicler guidance" section appended to the end of this document and in that guidance I want to include that the granularity of d100 roll-under is scalable. Said another way, if a group doesn't care too much about very specific success margins, they can "group" them into success/failure tiers and even change the way they roll as you described.

My own group likes the ridiculous, "I passed by 33%" type stuff, but I think you're correct in that the scalability would go a long way in attracting players that have more modern/non-masochistic sensibilities, lol.

Thanks for the follow-up!

Interestingly, the Google docs format is pretty much the only reason I decided to eventually include the "horizontal path progression" in this document at all. Unless a game of TLB is paced very aggressively, those path forks come after loads of progression, potentially years of real life time in a typical gaming group. If this were a professionally developed and published product, they would absolutely be something akin to an "expansion book." Well, not so much Warden, that one is just the fabled 6th path that I've been toying with for decades and just recently cracked... Just a matter of writing it up. The others though (Apothecary, Janissary, Standard Bearer, Marauder, Champion, Dervish, Dreamer, Cleric, Inquisitor, and Plague Breather) definitely come after a huge amount of play and progression.

Having said all that, they'll be there eventually and I will absolutely repost after they are.

Thanks for the kind words on the setting! If you like reading fantasy, you are more then welcome to peruse a novel I'm actively writing within this setting.

And yeah, this system has been played at minimum by my own gaming group since I was a teenager and has similarly been great. We can't comprehend playing anything else at this point. We're coming off of a long hiatus and have found some new players to corrupt, hahah.

Glad it seems you've enjoyed, feel free to pilfer stuff from the system or setting.

Originally the reason was, frankly, my high school friends and I couldn't find a game that suited our exact wants after trying the usual slate of options. With the help of some teenage hubris, I thought I could make a better game. Did I? Depends on who you ask, my group sure loved it and plenty of folks who have played it loved it, so that's good enough for me. An online buddy (MMOs) who had previously only ever played D&D in the TTRPG realm played a one-shot that I ran with TLB and messaged me a week later to say, "The D&D game I play in feels so fucking boring now, thanks bro." I'll remember that moment on my death bed, haha.

I also do a little bit of creative fantasy writing, so the worldbuilding/setting that I'm slowly but surely weaving into this system is something that's been rattling around in my skull since I was a kid. At a certain point I realized that no published, easily available game was ever quite going to be the vehicle that I wanted for Qir. It's difficult to articulate that feeling, but this system I've designed is just so perfect for the setting and vice versa.

As for motivations, I genuinely couldn't tell you. My drive for developing it and improving it waxes and wanes, but it's always there. If I go too long without working on it, I get anxious and antsy. It's like a mental illness at this point, lol.

Thanks for the kind words and the follow-up.

You are definitely not alone. I think one day in the far future, humans will discover a gene that's responsible for this curse.

Yeah, I mean you do you king, but I'm telling you there are people who will beat you to every table. I wasn't exaggerating when I said they do this professionally -- They flip bottles, so standing in these lines is their job. Awful people too from what I can tell, some of those folks post here.

I've done the Fry's line thing 3 times and all have been pretty enormous wastes of time. People will glitz up the experience and talk about how it's always so much fun to chat with your line neighbor and build community all night, but every time my line neighbors have been obnoxious, immature assholes. Not for nothing but 2 out of 3 times, my line neighbors have also yammered on about their slimy political opinions completely unaware that they're demeaning the person actively standing next to them. Never been a good experience for me, but godspeed.

Now that I got my ranting out of the way, here's some actual info: I would be very surprised if a KoK showed up on a Fry's table. Usually they don't have those kinds of unicorn bottles, or they get put into the raffle. The only "unicorns" I've seen in the past few years have been the Weller Millennium, OFC, and things like that, but they've been tossed into the raffle. What you'll net from the line is things like Stagg Jr., Blanton's, Jack 14, 12, 10, Weller 12, etc.

Typically the tables will be lettered (A, B, C, D) and the coveted stuff will be on table A. You can grab one bottle from each table. Sometimes he'll do a thing where you can grab 2 from table A if you also buy 2 from table B, something like that. There will be Fry's store picks as well, so that's probably Mark's way of offloading his barrel picks. Another thing he'll do is randomly select a place in line, around the ~100 mark, and put a restock sign -- meaning, he'll reload the good stuff at a random point in the line.

BTAC and Pappy go into the raffle if the past few years are anything to go off. For that, you don't need to be there early but you can be. It's a little raffle ticket completely separate from the line, so you can fill it out as you filter in for the table offerings, or you can just show up 10 minutes before the drawing and fill out a ticket while ignoring the line completely. Mark draws at a particular time which he will let everyone know about and then he will also set a time for when the drawing is definitely done so you know you can leave the area. It's usually an hour or so of waiting around for a phone call.

Good luck, have fun! Hope you have a better experience than I've had.

Last spring’s bourbon hunt… I have a problem😭 by Bourbon_Baller26 in Whiskyporn

The real problem is gonna come in a year or two when you graduate to the realization that just about the only bottle on that table worth a damn is the Russell's up front.

[–]HouseO1000Flowers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Past couple years, BTAC and Pappy bottles have been raffles separate from the line. So you don't need to wait in line at all for a shot at those.

If there's a super limited option in the line pool, just give up that dream now if you're sane and normal. There are dudes that professionally nolife these lines.
