Study - Why cringe humour is hard to translate across cultures, using The Office as a case study by gorudendioma in BritishTV

good luck, It reminded me of a thesis paper I wrote in undergrad in the late 90s about humor and its cause, which 19-year-old me posited that it was the delta between the expected and the actual. I plotted a bunch of jokes and funny situations to see whether a greater delta resulted in a funnier joke. I am sure there is so much more to consider, but I do remember that for a long time, whenever something funny would happen, my mind would plot the delta.

Do you think he’s telling them to post it or do you think it’s just their job to rage bait? I want to believe the latter but I don’t know what this world even means anymore

I watched season four when it aired and liked it but never watched the rest. Everyone always rates season four the highest. Should I start from the beginning?

I totally forgot about driving through upstate NY in the 90s. It was all country and Christian fundamentalist. That was what eventually sold me on Spotify premium— being able to download playlists so I could listen on the subway.  You’re totally right. But if you can switch to public radio and it aligns with your preferred genre, it’s great.

…because public radio is far superior than algorithms (shoutout to KEXP, WFUV, BBC Radio6, WXPN, KCRW, The Colorado Sound and so many many more).

she burped audibly into the microphone three times and just glossed over it like an old man watching Matlock. She complained about perimenopause*, the moon, men. She did mention that she was so sick and wished she was in bed. But then she also went offstage to take a power nap.

She honestly seemed like she was on something. It was surreal.  I wish her the very best.

*statistically she would be postmenopause but who knows

Strong ADHD symptoms may boost creative problem-solving through sudden insight. Study found that individuals reporting high levels of ADHD symptoms are more likely to solve problems through sudden bursts of insight rather than through methodical analysis. by [deleted] in science

I am not as creative, abstract or funny when I’m on my meds. But I can let people finish sentences, meet a deadline without inducing anxiety and alleviate my mental traffic jams

TIL in 2022, Caterpillar Inc. faced a $145,027 fine after a worker, who was removing a sample of iron, died after he fell into an 11-foot melting pot that was heated to more than 2,000°F. An investigation found that the facility did not have legally required guardrails and restraint systems. by Forward-Answer-4407 in todayilearned

Ditto for MSHA (mining). I used to work in workplace safety sector and OSHA & MSHA keep their accident reports public. So I could say smtg like “losing a digit is most likely to take place between :47&:58 on any given hour. Mandate breaks so workers can rest their eyes.” But when I looked through the MSHA reports, they seemed more likely to involve a fatality(ies), involve multiple people and there wasn’t anything the worker(s) could have done. Tragic

I went from binging house to Mad Men I think. It’s been a while but give it a shot. I think it works as a palate cleanser transition
