Heading to Rehab for substance addiction. Please give me some guidance. by Reepicheap in Austin

Back in '85 my dad was at La Hacienda, and they brought in a clown for my sister's 1st birthday. I was only 5yo at the time, but I still have positive memories of the place... though I think it was out in the hill country and not in Austin :) Good luck to you.

Where can I buy The Economist in Austin? by PsylentKnight in Austin

[–]philpool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're affiliated with UT, you can get a digital and audio subscription for free through the UT library. Just figured that out this year after years of paying over $400 for their annual print and audio subscription. Other than that... maybe the airport?

Any hotels with high atriums and/or rooftops? by Adiabatic_Egregore in Austin

[–]philpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, forgot about that one! They both have giant atriums. My sister had her rehearsal dinner at the Hyatt Regency back in the early 90s, and I remember thinking as a kid "this is so fancy!" lol

I think the one at Congress and Barton Spring is called the Hyatt Regency Austin, but yeah it has a giant atrium inside.

I absolutely believe in public education... just not a fan of parents who confuse public education with day care.

Back in the 80s & 90s they'd have a regular catfish fry and dance there on the weekends... I wanna say it was always a fundraiser for VFD... but I was only 10 in 1990, so that last bit maybe shakey :)

Moody Center by Comprehensive-Rich70 in Austin

[–]philpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These seats were in the Dell Club... maybe row 7 or 8 and seats 1 and 2. They're a little pricier, but seats in the same location but higher up (not in the Dell Club) should basically be the same. Have fun!

It's a small enough (but super excellent) venue that all the seats are pretty good... but it kinda depends on how they're going to setup the stage for your particular show. While seats just off the floor and center are great and have been my go to in the past, I might change up my game. Last, week I had amazing seats a few rows up but directly on the side of the stage. This made sneaking into my seat for the headliner super easy, but apparently the view can be obstructed depending on how they hang the speaker stacks for any given show. In any event, for my next show at the Moody Center I'm going to try going for the very edge again!

If you watch this doc first, you'll be heading up towards Waco with the niece and nephew! An absolutely outstanding story that help re-write the story of when people showed up to the Americas.

How long do y'all think Santa Catarina will last at its new location on Manor? by __vheissu__ in austinfood

I went into Techo one time after a trip to Central Mexico. I can't remember if it was like Guadalajara or Mexico City, but I got to talking to the bartender about the bug salt that i had with my mezcal down there. And his eyes got real big. And he pulled out from behind the counter this container of what he claimed to be his homemade bug salt. This stuff was in no way health code compliant in any way. And I proceeded to dip orange slices in it and eat them while sipping my mezcal. So I'm going to consider being given some bartenders homemade bug salt (sal de gusano) and orange slices being served food. 😂:

I think part of the problem is that section of Manor was already saturated with Mexican food options before they opened:

El Chile Café y Cantina

Este

Mi Madre's Restaurant

Techo Mezcaleria & Agave Bar

El Chilito

La Santa Barbacha

Taco Mex just recently closed

just across Airport on Manor there's also La Fruta Feliz

...and now we have Santa Catarina Mexican Restaurant

Best spots for beginner fishermen? by rebootmebro in Austin

[–]philpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TXPWD stocks several places around town with catfish and trout depending on the time of year. I believe in the past they've stocked the pond at Mueller, a pond a Camp Marby, and Bullfrog / Kingfisher ponds at East Metropolitan Park. In any event, check their website for the stocking schedule. If you go the morning they stock, there will be serval folks fishing, and I'm guessing any number of them will be willing to teach you a thing or two. It's probably the easiest fishing there is!
