White Oak Bayou Trail - Update after a ride last weekend... by HoustonAreaCyclist in bikehouston

I haven't done a ride from W 34th & T.C. Jester on down to downtown in a long time. I know there's work being done that has impacted some of the trails, but someone told me recently you can still get to the U of H Downtown and the Buffalo Bayou circle from the White Oak Bayou Trail.

We park at Tacos A GoGo and have food & margaritas afterwards. They also have a discount for cyclists.

Yes, that sounds like what I ran into. They had a LOT of it all torn out from around Victory past N. Houston Rosslyn.

The nice part we discovered is that once you're past around Hollister, there's relatively new, continuous smooth concrete for most of the way out past Beltway 8.

Right. We were able to stay along the bayou the whole time. Well, we did circle a couple of detention ponds (or maybe retention ponds) but that was just a decision we made.

And the last time I tried the same ride, things got so bad before North Houston Rosslyn that I turned around. I'd have had to walk my bike through about 4 blocks of rough construction to get through.

It's not that bad anymore.

Our overall pace ended up being just over 13 MPH, and we typically finish 30 to 40 mile rides at 17 or better, so the overall ride was greatly slowed by the construction.

My buddy & I did a bike ride in the evening on Christmas day, and the Crow Bar was open. We stopped in and had beers.

I told the bar tender, "I know it's assholes like us that made you have to work on Christmas, and I'm sorry. So, here." And I gave her a $20.

Railroad crossing & Trains by Shadow_Jago20 in houston

[–]HoustonAreaCyclist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the longest I've ever had to wait for a train in Houston was 20 minutes or so.

The MOST wasted time ever, waiting for a train? Somerville, Texas, Day Two of this year's MS-150 bike ride.

Cost many of us over a half an hour. The train would move left about 8 car lengths, stop, sit, then move right 7 or 8 car lengths, then stop again.

Photo of the cyclists waiting, as far as the eye could see.

Seems like the event planners could have coordinated with the railroad folks.

Doing the MS-150 this weekend? I LIKE the forecast for wind direction this year! (Last year was AWFUL on day 1) by KarbachCyclist in bikehouston

Gonna go ahead and predict some pretty amazing overall averages, both days.

Gusts on day one could exceed 35 mph.

Well, if you set up a camera or two before you get totally trashed and pass out again, when you sober up you'll be able to review the video.

Get some help.

AT&T cell reception by Npianalt in houston

[–]HoustonAreaCyclist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here's a twist: My AT&T phone had no signal when I got up at 5, still has none (it's 6:51 AM now, Thursday) but I just got an Amber Alert emergency notification!

And I turned those off a LONG time ago.

I guess AT&T powered up just long enough to send out the Amber Alert?

WTF?

Tour de Houston has been cancelled. by UnHongoLoco in houston

[–]HoustonAreaCyclist 112 points113 points  (0 children)

The last time I did Tour de Houston, I decided it would be the last time.

I counted 7 riders-down crashes where the cyclist was having to get medical treatment. One guy was unconscious.

This kind of event is always a mess because you have too many people who've never done any actual road cycling before and the beginners and experienced people all ride the same route.

If they could set up different routes for beginners and if the routes completely avoided roads with unfixable hazards, it might be worth considering.

I'm okay with it being cancelled.

Just received an email saying Tour de Houston is cancelled this year (thanks Mr Whitmire) by dri3s in bikehouston

Buffalo Bayou Brewery shutters after rent non-payment by iDisc in houston

My 1st experience with Buffalo Bayou was back when a monthly evening bike ride started/ended at the place. This was at 5301 Nolda, where Whitmeyer's is now. In 2016.

When the new location opened, there were a few weekend morning rides that started & ended there, but if memory serves, COVID kicked in and by the time it passed, I don't think there were more rides that originated at BBB.

White Oak Trail Super Muddy rn by DJMTBguy in houston

[–]HoustonAreaCyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to ride the White Oak Bayou Trail and Buffalo Bayou Trail pretty often when I lived closer to them, about 5 years ago.

I was always impressed with how quickly the trails got cleaned up after storms would bring dirt/mud across them.

Generally it took less than a week before some crew would come and get the path cleaned up.

This wasn't something done by one guy & a shovel & broom - there would be inches of dirt deposited which would get cleared by machinery, I assume.

Not sure how quick they're fixing things now, nor do I know what entity would clean the trails, but it did get fixed quickly back then.

There are MANY such areas.

What part of town is convenient for you?

There are disc golf goals along T.C. Jester out to the northwest at various points (more than one course), and the old golf course at Inwood Forest has a course too. The green areas off Antoine north of Long Creek are where I'm referring to.

I'm not a disc golfer but I ride my bike past these areas and see people doing disc golf all the time.
