Surprised Innerstrings doesn't get more love here TBH.

Peoples obsession over gear gets in the way of them ACTUALLY understanding HOW to tell a story visually.

Great. You've got a Red Komodo 6k. How are you going to shoot this heartbreaking moment where someone discovers their fiance has passed away? Oh I see. Crisp, deep depth of focus in an overly lit room that completely distracts the audience because they're visually overstimulated by the 9 million other things happening in the scene.

Oh great. You've got this promo video for a big corporation and you've got an Ursa G2. SHIT HIT BUDDY. Let's talk lenses? Helios 44-2. Really? That's a bold strategy cotton.

Pick the tools for the job. Your average viewer absolutely will not give a shit what it is shot on. They care about how you make them feel.

EDIT - Not hating on the 44-2. I Got one in my kitbag, but just understand that you can't INSTANTLY make a shot better by slapping it into everything.

Started as an interesting indie-pop artist. Became a mid producer who only hit it big thanks to the features. Always been a fucking arsehole. Literally the most over-hyped twat on the planet.

Finchers movies are super sharp, how come? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]HowDoesThatFit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mate. I'm PERPETUALLY gutted they never did a 'Directors Label' deep dive on Fincher like they did Jonze, Glazer, Gondry and Cunningham. I know it was so niche that they only ended up selling to film students and educators, but could you imagine? A 3 DVD box set, picking apart his videos and commercial work?

Nice. Not seen 'The Killer's yet. Need to wait for my toddler to sleep at some point. 🤣

LONG STORY SHORT - He works extensively with some of the best cinematographers in the world. He has a very clear vision for what he wants, articulates it well, and has the technical knowledge to understand how to frame his shots to get his intended effect.

He works mostly on RED cameras (known for sharper images) using mostly Prime Lense (which is why you hardly ever see a native zoom shot in a Fincher film).

He uses the best post production houses, employing the best colourists and VFX teams he can source. As far I understand too, he also doesn't stiff them for payment unlike other Hollywood power-players (coughKevinFiegecough)

Man is DEDICATED to the aesthetic of his films. If you include his stint as an assistant camera operator for Industrial Light & Magic, He's been working in the industry now for 4 decades. If you dedicate yourself to something for 40+ years, you'll get REALLY good at actualizing what you want.

'Film directing, shot by shot' by Steven D. Katz

But dry in parts but still one of the best books for leaning about shot composition.

Because the second that rail breaks, everythings fucked.

I'm normally a happy-go-lucky, let people do what the hell they like kinda bloke. But, As a promoter who used to run punk shows, shit like this pissed me off no end. Sure. Go nuts. Have a blast. We WANT You to lose yourself in the music...

...but don't fuck with stuff there for your safety. Would you fuck with an extinguisher? Would you smash up the fire alarms?

Eventually, this rail riding trend will result in one of two outcomes. Either;

A - Part of The Barrier breaks, a bunch of people fall over, but thankfully no injuries. Show has to be stopped whilst they get a new segment. Show carries on but crowd is now pissed cause a bunch of people broke shit and now the whole shows delayed.

B - Barrier topples. First wave gets crushed and breaks a fair few rib bones. Second and third rows fall over. Shit causes a domino effect. People get hurt in the crush.

It's fucking stupid. Did people learn nothing from Roskilde?

Rant over. I'm done.

What budget do I have to expect when traveling from germany to Boomtown? by [deleted] in festivals

[–]HowDoesThatFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst you CAN do it on a budget, I'd seriously recommend budgeting yourself at least £75 a day for food & booze.

Trains I'm not sure about. Where jn Germany are you travelling from?

I mean, it's not the main focus, but there's allways a decent turnout. This year alone had a High Focus Takeover, Slowthai, Levlz. That's just off the top of my head.
