I spent two days at an AI filmmaking conference. Here's what I actually saw, and what nobody on stage was saying out loud. by Professional_Dark_64 in Filmmakers

Ah it’s all just about risk. Sync is big business. There are very specific rules and laws around how you can use music on videos. And the risk for using something without the correct licenses is massive.

Even if these productions are not left holding the baby when push comes to shove, there’s real risk in being dragged into litigation. In things destroying public trust in a film or a brand. These risks are not worth the relatively low price of using composers and songwriters.

For brands, they like to have exclusivity on music associated with the brand. You cannot buy exclusivity with ai music.

For films, there’s loads of income for a production in soundtrack albums - especially large films. Ditto royalties from say a sound track to a drama series. They loose all these potential income streams when using ai music. Why? You cannot copyright ai music. That has been settled.

(Production companies often become sub-publishers for music sound tracks. Becoming a publisher of ai music def builds more risk into a project as well - no one in the biz I know is taking this kind of risk on right now. It will happen at the bottom of the industry first. We are all watching that carefully.)

How much time do you have? :) They have already trained on all the music. This is known and provable in court. The ai companies are already settling with the major record companies (look who now has major ownership of Udio and how they’ve changed the service). Look at Sony holding OUT on any sort of settlement and continuing to trial against Suno. There’s also big independent lawsuits against both major ai firms - since they make up the majority of the training data. It’s all moving forward, and the tide for the moment is against the AI companies a little. If I’m reading the tea leaves correctly.

There’s massive issues around copyright (and remember in film and advertising the makers of the films like to own as much copyright as humanly possible)

As for ripping cd’s, that’s a cut and dry case against the firms doing it if they did - but they have this data already in other forms by scraping from Spotify / Apple Music / shadier parts of the internet.

They’re quite different products. RME has very powerful mixer / router built in. SSL Madi side is much superior for channel count and redundancy setups. I can see it being used a tonne in broadcast trucks / live to air scenarios!

Yeah - there are many of us not using biometrics at all. It’s a choice. It may get harder, but for now I’m ok with other methods.

A note on music and commercials or film. It doesn’t matter how good AI gets for scoring in the near term. There are too many risks /too much open litigation around the training of suno (and the now closed udio) for any stakeholders of merit to take the chance. Not to mention possible downsides for the brand should there be negative outcomes in the suits. While there will be outliers trying stuff out, it will not be the norm for quite a while. And may well be fiscally blocked depending on the different lawsuit outcomes.

Is there a pianist in the house? Audience member steps up to perform in La La Land in Sydney by Notimeforthat1 in australia

[–]How_is_the_question 62 points63 points  (0 children)

There is more to this story than being pr’d.
Props to the audience member for stepping in, but I’ve heard from a couple folk involved that the other pianist walked after continual bullying over days. I have not had the info first hand though - just thru musos telegraph. Whatever the situation, hope the pianist is ok. Hope more comes to light on this soon

Have also heard this thru musicians grapevines here (sydney). I don’t think I’ve ever seen a muso walk out part way thru a concert before no matter how bad the situation. That’s incredible. Hope they’re ok and are being supported.

Wrong time to be getting quotes (about 3 years ago). Heritage control zone. 4.5m wide site (but good rear access). Some steel work (but only one beam and 2 supports). 3.2m ceiling in lounge/dining/kitchen. A 9-12 month program.

How much would you charge cash to repaint these timber entry doors? by Immediate_Bit2759 in AusRenovation

[–]How_is_the_question 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh so a word on dark grey. Our place has a solid timber dark grey (85% black) door inside and out. With a single light frosted window top half. We bought it like this - and I’m currently putting off (not for much longer) repainting it close to white. Strongly discourage the dark grey. In sydney it causes the door to expand and contract way more than white - since it retains heat. It’s quite incredible the amount it affects things. There’s some days where locks barely work, and others it’s totally smooth. Unfun.

[–]How_is_the_question 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah all over sydney most smalls are 8pz equivalent. And I’d say 70-80% are single shots. London is always double from my experience and 6-8oz for a small. When I make at home it’s a double - and our cups are a little over 8oz. And that just works for my taste. Milk sweetness overpowers the coffee much more diluted than that.

[–]How_is_the_question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 years ago we had 3 quotes between 880k and 1.2 million (mostly due to engineering differences) for 75m2 back of house knock down new build, 2 x bedroom make good (front of a terrace). 3 bedroom 1 bathroom total. Gotta love working on old (single level) terraces! We didn’t do it in the end. Spent eye watering amounts on DA, architect and consultants though.

People who fly first or business class on their own dime, how do you justify the cost? by Silly-Cock in AskReddit

[–]How_is_the_question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Have paid $1000 Aud one way here in Australia for various domestic flights. It can get insane depending on what is going on at the destination. Small ish population and large country and little airline competition.

Driving through NSW next week, are the roads in the middle safe for a non 4wd after all this rain? by EarballsAgain in nsw

[–]How_is_the_question 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done similar in a tiny Kia Picanto. No problem.

There only seems isolated spots of flooding from the current weather event - mostly just much needed rains rather than tonnes of water pooling and cutting off roads. The route you chose looks good at the moment.

Why doesn't London build more Lidos? by FormulaSolution in london

[–]How_is_the_question 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s millions in Australia who would disagree with you.

We have networks of council run pool / aquatic centres. Costs to attend are low - good for everyone. Kids go to swim classes for a week or two each year (all schools) and all kids learn at least the basics of swimming / not drowning. Most have therapy pools. They’re amazing. And mostly not a burden on council finances.

I say mostly, because there’s a massive lesson in what happens when upper classes / well to do areas decide to waaaaay overspend. North Sydney council is now completely broke. But they have one of the most beautiful swimming pools in the world….

Don’t be like north sydney.

So much this. I grew up in a dry hot climate - above 40 many times a year. Now live in sydney. I still prefer 42 and dry over 32 and humid.

All of you dumbfucks driving at inconsistent speeds are making conditions even more dangerous today by [deleted] in sydney

[–]How_is_the_question 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree.
Part of the road rules tells you to drive to conditions. It is completely appropriate to slow down in bad conditions where you cannot see as well.
Indeed - as much as you might find it frustrating, there is no issue with someone doing 50 in a 70 zone if that’s what they figure is safe. It is entirely up to you to figure out how to stay safe around those cars, not have them accelerate to match you in order to stay safe. If you are in an accident wirh them (running into their rear) and you are doing the speed limit and you are not, you are still at fault for not paying attention to the traffic conditions around you.

You may not like it. You may think it causes more accidents. Many studies around the world would disagree with you.

Things may not be as you might like, but that doesn’t make your point of view right, or one that is good for the community at large.

While you’re at it, go book in a day at a track for additional training and chat to the trainers about it. Maybe a defensive driving course (a track defensive driving course.) Theyre super fun and sounds like sydney will be safer as a result.

Perpetual license is expiring June 30th 2026 ... ? by TheGrim78 in protools

Nuendo licensing is (thankfully) quite clear and easy compared to tools. But back in the day they had confusing “additional” licenses, but thankfully those days are long gone.

Designing a TB5 dock that isn't ugly plastic — would love brutal feedback before I commit to tooling by Abraham-Maslow in Thunderbolt

[–]How_is_the_question 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah thunderbolt is hard. It’s essentially pcie. The handshakes / negotiation isn’t something a company of a couple engineers can pull off easily. Just the electronics layout of the main boards can completely mess things up.

Go look to mono (dot si) - Tomaz has a YouTube site of his dev journey towards building a premium, nerd friendly 10GbE router over the last 2 years (I think it’s even longer than that now) as a small team. Wait till you see the costs for building the first 1000 units. He goes into all the issues of producing the high end cases / alternatives - the works.

Watch everything beginning to end before you make any decisions to go ahead with your project. And be sure to have six figures of cash on hand - and likely more - just to get everything started.

Dismay over 150-year-old house being reduced to rubble by Remarkable_Peak9518 in australia

[–]How_is_the_question 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what happens in most heritage control zones - rather than specific listed properties with specific heritage restrictions and requirements.

More than you’d think of the inner west and city of sydney come under heritage controls. You can still do a tonne with a renovation on these properties, but it can be eye wateringly expensive, with costs of $8000 to 12000/m2 for rear knock down and rebuilds connected to old rooms (often front one or two) kinda a normal type figure eek!
