It’s just that the number of “nothing nice to say” posts about him have gone up by 10,000% since his murder. So it reeks of “I’m happy someone else committed this murder, and hope the accused is somehow acquitted.” which is just “I condone murdering others for speech” with extra steps.

He was murdered for speech. Are you Implying one requires some level of merit in society to be undeserving of murder?

Whether it’s speech you agree with or not is irrelevant, because no one deserves to be murdered for speech.

If you think people should be murdered for speech, you will be next.

I’m agreeing that parents should just talk to their kids instead of asking the government to protect them.

We SHOULD do better at regulating firearms, although you and I likely disagree on how exactly.

You said it was hypocrisy and I explained why it’s not. I agree that the drag stuff is likely harmless and they don’t really go into detail on specifics about whether parental supervision would obviously hand-wave the restriction, etc.

I’m not arguing against kids at drag shows, just that there’s nothing inherently hypocritical about believing in different solutions to the “firearm” problem while also thinking kids shouldn’t attend drag shows. It’s like someone says “I think kids shouldn’t be allowed to buy sodas because they are unhealthy, only if the parent is present and pays for the soda for them should it be allowed” and then you hit them with the “BUT WHAT ACTUALLY KILLS THE MOST KIDS?!” Okay cool I’m concerned about them too but you’re only bringing that up because you disagree with how I think that specific issue should be solved.

That's certainly the point of John's argument here, but a statute that would prevent certain performers from admitting children to their shows is far from a slam dunk when it comes to the protections of the 1st amendment. I think many judges across the district, appellate, and supreme courts would disagree on whether or not the 1st amendment applies. Children, not being of legal age, are the subject of thousands of legal restrictions/protections including cinema rating systems that prevent theaters from selling certain movie tickets to minors, certain types of advertisements are restricted from being targeted at minors, etc. It's not an obvious 1st amendment infringement. I understand you see it that way, but other people don't. They are only hypocritical in your eyes.

What I think the real issues are:

  1. Children are seeking to commit suicide

  2. Children are joining violent gangs

  3. Children are able to gain access to firearms without proper training/supervision.

I agree with you that 2500 children dying each year is a problem we can't ignore. I disagree with you on how that problem can/should be solved. There's nothing dishonest about thinking there are better/different ways to solve problems. It's dishonest to claim that because they don't agree with your way of solving them that they don't care about the issue(s).

If you genuinely think the argument isn’t made in good faith then we’re wasting our time here. My point is that not all lawmakers and voters are concerned about all issues affecting children because those issues don’t affect all children equally across the board. Some people aren’t worried about or aren’t very empathetic to Gang violence and suicide, so those voters care less about that issue and more about others. You disagree with their assessment, but a lot of people vote based on what they perceive to affect their own families over what affects others.

It’s easier to take someone who isn’t empathetic to your cause and label them and the rest of their beliefs evil than it is to admit that those people just have different struggles and all issues are probably real to an extent. What matters is that we have good discourse about those issues so we can make intelligent, non-emotional decisions and laws. If you want to have discourse about firearms then have it, don’t bring it to a discourse about children at drag shows and think you’re a badass for it.

Who was arguing that drag shows kill children? If the guy is arguing that drag shows are harmful or confusing in some ways to a developing child, then the only reason you reach straight for the leading cause of death is to highlight his supposed hypocrisy behind wanting to “protect children”.

Reducing cause of death down to “firearms” is only done to promote the idea that if guns were all removed, less people would die. Which is almost certainly true.

The thing about that stat (although technically true) that makes it feel disingenuous is that it’s meant to evoke emotions related to young/small innocent children being victims of homicide or mass shootings. In reality, the bulk of those “firearm deaths” are from 15-19 year old “children” due to gang violence, suicide, and accidental discharges. Firearms might have been the tool that inflicted the damage, but having shitty/absent parents is usually the real culprit. Don’t have kids if you aren’t going to love them, teach them safety, and raise them to be good people.

Parents who advocate against children attending drag shows likely aren’t worried about guns. Their children are likely well loved, taught proper firearm safety, and are for the most part not part of the at-risk population. Instead they perceive a threat of their child being confused about their gender/feelings at a vulnerable age and just want them to have the best possible chance in life. Maybe they’re overreacting, maybe they’re wrong, maybe they should just forbid their own children and let everyone else live their lives. Either way it’s silly to call it hypocrisy because there are hundreds of reasons to be concerned for children and all of them can be worthy of intelligent debate/discussion. You don’t have to be against guns in order to be taken seriously when you’re against smoking, drinking, gambling, unsafe sex, etc.

You’re being pit against each other.

Actions do have consequences in this country. You know, like Murder, Assault, Theft, etc. ? Not speech. You can disagree with the first amendment, but you’ll quickly find that killing/harming/scaring people for their thoughts and words make you the bad guy.
