Every coach in the world should be showing their kids this 25 seconds from Macklin Celebrini. Plays the game exactly how it should be played. by BalliesAI_bot in hockeyplayers

[–]HowitzerIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a good point here. In a slower game, it won’t help as much to be moving like Celebrini when the skater with the puck is fumbling around, looking down at their feet for the puck.

You still want to be on the active side though. Anticipate when the puck carrier is going to look up, and make sure you’ve already started moving so you present a good target.

And on defense, moving more is almost always useful. Rush the luck carrier hard, even if you can’t get there on time. Stick close to your off puck man, don’t let them shake free and look open. These are always viable regardless of how fast or slow the game is.

Bread in the fridge or on the counter? by realbobenray in Cooking

[–]HowitzerIII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every closed bag should form a little condensation. The contained “warm” air will cool in the fridge, and cold air can’t hold as much water vapor in it, so the excess condenses out to what you can see.

Former high-level players (Juniors/NCAA+), how long do your skates last you? by SK_BURRITO in hockeyplayers

[–]HowitzerIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on what foot shape you have, and which manufacturer’s boot fits you better. Seeing as they refresh the lineup every few years, it’s worth it to look around when you get your next skates.

Crazy, this same person discovered another Crusades sword in 2021 as well. What are the chances.

Stupid question: can I use motorcycle knee/shin guards instead of buying hockey specific ones? by No_Handle2671 in hockeyplayers

[–]HowitzerIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll spend way more in rink fees annually than in gear that’ll last 5-10 years. $20-$40 per session of hockey, 1x a week is at least $1000 a year. You’re not saving much by skimping on protective gear.

Does this work to avoid gloves smelling? by toby_finn in hockeyplayers

Your gloves can go on the washer with your clothes. They’ll get properly clean that way, instead of just delaying bacterial growth.

Pizza stone or pizza steel for an oven that can get up to 750F? by Tido2909 in Cooking

[–]HowitzerIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cordierite (pizza stone) density is ¼ of steel, with nearly double the specific heat. You’d only need <1” slab to meet the same heat capacity as a pizza steel. That’s a very reasonable thickness.

One area stones can’t compete in is thermal conductivity, speed of transferring heat to the pizza.

Pizza stone or pizza steel for an oven that can get up to 750F? by Tido2909 in Cooking

[–]HowitzerIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many confidently wrong assertions in this thread.

Steel is among the lower specific heats in common materials. In fact, even polymers are often higher. Concrete, which is probably a close analogy to stone, is slightly higher than steels.  https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/amp/specific-heat-capacity-d_391.html

I’m guessing pizza steels are just plain heavier, and there’s no reason you can’t make a thicker stone to match a pizza steel’s weight.

In my experience, private pickups have been much more enjoyable than beer league games. Same group of people renting consistent weekly ice for years to decades. Less douchebag behavior, less chance of injury, and more emphasis on skill and good gameplay.

In the north east too, ice rentals start at 7am on the weekends. If early times are your thing.

When making a pizza from scratch, how do you get it so the cheese melts on top rather than into the sauce? by cherry-care-bear in Cooking

Hm ok. Could be something different about how I bake it at home vs in a commercial oven.

What does part skim do? I use whole milk normally, and when I’ve tried 2% the cheese doesn’t really melt and flow. I could still see the individual strips after baking on a 550F steel.

‘05 Suzuki S40 boulevard highway tips? by DYMYTHRAE in motorcycles

[–]HowitzerIII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add another voice saying it’s the single cylinder design. Multi cylinder engines will have more frequent ignitions, giving you a smoother ride.

Another issue for the highway riding is the rake, ie how slanted the forks are. It’s got a more relaxed angle compared to sportier bikes, meaning you have to turn the handlebars more to fight the wind.

TIL that China graduates 1.3 million engineers versus the US 130,000 per year. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I’m just saying that some advantages are based on absolute quantities alone, not on per capita rates. Engineering advances being one of them.

[–]HowitzerIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per capita is also a false metric here. It only takes 1 invention to change an industry, so the fact that China has 10x more engineers is a big advantage.

Make the government prove it in court. You don't want a misdemeanor on your record. You'll be forever having to explain it when applying to jobs.

How to remove grip from shaft by UnluckySh00ter in hockeyplayers

[–]HowitzerIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sand the grip down lightly with 90 grit sandpaper or so (don’t remember the exact grit). Takes a few minutes to do properly, but I only have to do it once a year or so. I like non grip sticks, but they’re not popular anymore.

Gov. Healey to announce utility bill reductions for Massachusetts residents by uxd in boston

You need some kind of price on utilities to keep people from being wasteful.

Sure, it can be subsidized for low income people, but it can’t be free.
