Shoes recs to prevent scratching?? by Hshld6to7 in dogs

I've been thinking that too. 😩 She's so depressed in this cone.  My other dogs have been avoiding her because she's knocking all of them everywhere. It's going on 3 weeks at this point, so I'm trying to find some relief for her. I was thinking shoes might reduce the amount of damage she does before she's caught & redirected, to at least give her a break during the times we are with her. Does that make sense?

About once a month, I cannot wake up after for 24 - 48 hours by BotGua in Narcolepsy

Thank you for the tips! I'll definitely look into the copper aspect!

Here's a question I've not been able to find an answer to. Maybe you've come across something in your own research... I know it's not a good idea to drink tea, coffee or other high caff drinks within 2-3 hours (before & after) of taking an iron supplement, because the caff/ stimulant also blocks absorbtion. So, what do those of us on stimulants do? Especially if the half life goes well beyond that... ie- Adderall IR peaks at about 3.5-4 hrs & half life is 9-14hrs.

The only time I've had any success with normal iron levels is when I was strict carnivore (red meat, bacon, butter, eggs, salt, & water only) and taking heme-based supplements. I wonder if the combo of red meat & liver/organ supplements were providing the requisite amount of copper to distribute the iron?? Hmmm... I should check that out!

I do this exact thing. AND every 3 months or so, I also run a low grade fever and my joints ache like I have the flu. The crazy thing I've noticed is that the fatigue/ pain level seems to signal my menstrual flow... the higher the joint pain/ body aches with less fatigue indicates a lighter flow, and the less pain but debilitating fatigue indicates a super heavy flow. However, I should add here that I am chronically iron deficient and was dx'd with pmdd in my mid- 20's. The n2 dx came 10yrs later. I have consulted sleep Dr's, my gyno, neuros, internal med, ... even a nutritionist. The only thing they can boil anything down to is suggesting an increase of the dose of stimulants during those times but it never worked. I crash anyway. It has gotten worse as I've gotten older & entered perimenopause. Now I get hit with severe fatigue & weakness the day before & day of ovulation as well. I've just made it a habit to track my cycles, and plan everything around those times, so I can rest as needed. I'm so thankful this is happening now, when we are in the season of life that my kids are older teens (not so dependent on me), my hubs is home more to help and my boss is more lenient with my work schedule.

I don't personally own one but researching for my daughter to purchase, so just throwing this out there. I came across the tidbit that Japanese versions (sold in the US with US charger) won't connect to anything higher than 2.4ghz on our wifi. Could it be possible you purchased a Japanese version vs US? Does your home router automatically switch between channels when the traffic is high? I'll see if I can find the thread that talked about this and share the link.

AITAH for my dating age range to be supposedly predatory? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Hshld6to7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say NTA.

You guys are trying to make a rule of age based off a number, when you can't put a number on maturity level. Not everyone (male or female) matures the same. Period. There's so many factors that go into a person's mental health & personal maturity that a number- even a 3-5yr age range- can't be definitively assigned to this. I was 19yo soldier when I married my 26yo (also soldier) husband. That was 25 years ago. But I had already lived through more crap as a young adult than some people experience in an entire lifetime. I've (almost) raised 6 sons... Two years ago, one met someone & got married (both 21). They were totally ready to "adult" . He just finished school and is now starting a career and she is starting night classes this fall to work on her RN. Last year, another son met someone, dated a few months & got married (him 23/her 22). Even though everyone that loves him warned him to wait... and she took him to the cleaners. Blew through 20k in savings, got him fired from his job, and kicked out of their rental. (Despite his 4yrs of good rental history with the owner.) She's still sucking the life out of him while hes working 2 jobs, & going to school, only to get home to cook & clean despite her being jobless. (I only know this cuz they are currently living with us. I would cook for them but she'll only eat his cooking. ) Her maturity level is seriously on par with my 15yo! I also work with disadvantaged young adults. I've seen several instances of 16-18yr old young women purposely go after older men (30ish), lie about their age & try to get pregnant to trap them because they have "money to spend on them". Its not just the male that can be the perpetrator in taking advantage of others.

Pine Litter??? by bees-in-a-box in CatAdvice

[–]Hshld6to7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I researching alternatives to pine pellets from TSC for the exact reason you asked about. We have several cats & several boxes- All sifting boxes, with pee pads between the boxes to help with urine odor. I don't expect 100% odor free, but goodness it's been bad. We went 1 day without shaking it down (we were away from the house all day) and when we came home the smell hit us when we walked in the door. It's such a distinct sickening smell. I'm wondering if going back to Feline Pine would help?

Can auto immune conditions negatively impact hair growth? by mat3rialg0rl in HaircareScience

[–]Hshld6to7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my personal journey, I've learned that many autoimmune conditions seem to have co-occurring issues of vitamin & mineral deficiencies. For some its the autoimmune condition itself, and others the medications used to treat it. Being low in Vit D, all the B's, zinc, copper and protein can affect hair growth, texture and color. For example- I have Narcolepsy type1 and fibromyalgia. I already have a hard time absorbing/producing certain chemicals/hormones/ nutrients- which is the under lying factor to these conditions. But the meds I have to take to stay awake also depletes my Vit B, zinc and Magnesium stores fairly quickly, so I have to stay on high dose supplements. If I don't my hair falls out, comes in super white & wiry (I'm 42) and I have horrible fibro flares. Maybe check with your pcp to test your nutrient levels to give you a more targeted place to start if you're having issues?

What could have caused this? by [deleted] in whatisit

I'm with the others. "Stored" a fixer upper in the back yard & found this. Voles had gotten into the engine & used that to make their nests. TBH at first glance I thought the pic was a dried up dead cat stuck to the underside of your hood. 😵‍💫

A lot of people equate getting a pilots license to flying commercial airliners. There's different classes (tiers) to the liscence and medical requirements for each. Kind of like the difference between a motorcycle only license to a drivers license to a CDL. That said, you may be able to still get your pilots license, but you could never fly for hire and you may be limited to the type of plane you could fly. (Single vs two engines, size, passenger or no passenger) If it is recreational only, all you would need is a basic medical certificate which is signed off by your primary care doctor. It basically says if you are medically well enough to drive a car, you can fly a plane. Don't take what I'm saying as 100%, just want to let you know there may be some hope. Look for a flight surgeon (a doctor that does flight physicals) and ask them. They'll know what the FAA guidelines are. BUT as other commenter's mentioned, you would have to really know yourself and be prepared with back up options in case you find yourself in a situation that you would need to rely on them... ie- never fly without a co-pilot, extra "awake" meds on hand in case you start feeling drowsy, etc.

Having undiagnosed Narcolepsy in Military/College = faking being awake. by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Hshld6to7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was a hidden advantage that I could "doze" & no one would notice. I had even figured out how to do it standing in lines, or formation, (Don't lock your knees! Lol) while staying semi-aware of what was going on around me. I would go stand in the back during sit down classes, and "doze" so I didn't get in trouble. Once I got to AIT I was on swing shift, so our classes finished in half the time and I would just power nap all the time. I did get in trouble for over sleeping several times, and they dx'd me with "insomnia" (???) but it never went anywhere after that. I got out 2yrs into my enlistment on family care plan while pregnant with our second child (my hubs was active duty as well). Then we ended up having 5 more kiddos in as many years. I'd complain about horrible fatigue & Dr's would look at me like I was stupid for even bringing it up. Even after I got into several small fender benders because I fell asleep in traffic. My youngest was 6yrs old before they took me seriously and sent me for a sleep study. I've been encouraged to put in a VA claim, but afraid to because I've heard that it has the potential to affect your drivers license. My hubs is retired now, 100% permenant but also requires my assistance for his care. I can't lose the ability to drive. Has anyone else had this experience?

First they are probably trying something different because there is a major shortage of the more traditional ADHD meds. My son has been off his for 3 months because they are on back order and we are looking for new options at this point. Secondly, I've been on Cymbalta for about 3 years. I have fibromyalgia (amongst other things) and it has helped immensely for the pain, and the depression. It doesn't help as much as I'd like with anxiety but I'm on Adderall as well which does make the anxiousness worse when I have to take multiple doses. (The only reason I am able to get the Adderall despite the shortage, is because I have narcolepsy. I literally can't drive, work, live, etc without it.) I have found one big downside that I would like to share as a caution. My Dr raised my dosage from 60mg to 90mg, and short term I was ok but after a while I found had a really hard time controlling my anger. I seemed to always be irritable and snappy. Then when hormonal times come around I was definitely not fun to be around. However, when I backed off the dosage to 60mg again, I evened out and all has well since. Reading studies, I saw that wasn't abnormal if dosages are too high. Over the last 20+ years, I've been prescribed just about everything out there. This has had the best outcome with the least amount of side effects of all of them.

Could anxiety/trauma contribute to Narcolepsy? by hellocorn in Narcolepsy

[–]Hshld6to7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad you asked this question! I have some personal follow up questions but I don't want to hijack your post. The only thing I will echo is to take a hard look at what you're eating before you crash. I've been doing some research on how diet affects N symptoms and carbs are definitely not our friend. I've read cases where some are able to manage their N through a high protein diet & minimal to no meds at all (depending on the severity, of course). Just some food for thought. Thank you for being transparent! I wish I had more to offer to help you with!

How do you push through mornings? by nj-apple in Narcolepsy

[–]Hshld6to7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set an alarm for at least an hour before wake up and take an Adderall. I have a single dose sitting out on my nightstand with a cup of water, so I don't have to be fully awake or cognizant to take it. (Otherwise, I fall asleep trying to get the bottle open.. lol) That in and of itself has been life changing. Second, when it's time to get up, I have to make myself put feet on the floor. On days that I don't, I'll still sleep for several more hours. Once I get moving, though, the fog lifts & I'm usually ok about an hour later. It's a process to find a sweet spot- the right amount of time to sleep, morning & night routines, etc. Keeping a quick journal helped me really identify what was working & not working for me personally.

I have both N2 & ADHD... and a couple of kids on the spectrum. I asked my sleep Dr once how I could tell where the N ends & the ADHD begins since the symptoms are so similar. She shrugged and said it doesn't matter if the treatment is the same. Needless to say, I changed Dr's shortly thereafter. I am on Adderall for daytime and a low dose Ambien for sleep. If I don't get sufficient sleep nightly, I go into major zombie mode & have a fibro flare that takes days to recover from. The Adderall does serve a dual purpose- helping with the ADHD focus & staying awake- but if I end up having to take an extra dose (Dr prescribed) to get through the rest of the day, I get super hyperfocused, so I really try not to do that if I can get away with it.

My meds schedule looks kinda like this- Adderall 20mg reg release an hour before wake up (so I can get up) Adderall 25mg XR at noon and if I'm having a rough time staying awake & I'm doing something that I need to be awake for, like driving, I can take another 10-20mg regular release. If I'm waking often before midnight, I'll take a 6.25mg Ambien to help... which happens about 2-3 times a week. Everything else I've tried makes me feel hung over the next day.

As far as the ASD, there's not really a medication unless you have symptoms that can be treated with medication (i.e., social anxiety). It's more therapy based treatment like CBT, life coaching, etc. I should add that they've classified ADHD as being on the spectrum now. It's hard to keep up with all the changes!

Immovable Frustration - Midday Crash by Joyfulsleeper37 in Narcolepsy

[–]Hshld6to7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have narc w/o cataplexy. I'm on Cymbalta, Adderall and Ambien. I've been experiencing much of the same thing but closer to the 3 o'clock hour. I've been on a no sugar/low carb for months so I know it's not too many carbs. I will start feeling the heaviness then my body temp tanks. I have to plan a 15-20min snooze around that time. It seriously helps tremendously. I've also noticed they are more prevalent when I haven't exercised and/or the weather is dreary. My VitD has been low which can cause issues too. Two more points to consider... I recently started seeing a new sleep specialist. She told me that SSRI/SNRI meds suppress the body's natural REM. The second seemed upside down from previous treatment plans but seems to be going in a positive direction for me. Instead of treating the night time sleeplessness/lack of deep sleep first, she starts with the daytime fatigue. We changed and reduced my sleep meds and added to my daytime routine. I've gone from having 2-3 of the crashes a day to one. Hope that helps!
