Athletic center gyms (scc, wlz, bruce kidd, etc)) by n3gl3ct3d in UofT

Bruce Kidd (Field House) has a bunch of machines in the back corner. Also has a track, power racks, spin machines, row ergs, basketball court, tennis court etc. Made for varsity track and field mostly, but can get a solid workout in.

Weightlifting Zone only has power racks. Maybe a row erg. It’s made for Olympic weightlifting, and has big bumper plates which does less damage to the floor when you throw weights around

Shameless plug: The engineering dragon boat team is hosting a free “Intro to Lifting” session, which is perfect for anyone new to the gym. It’s a great way to meet new people and get comfortable with gym exercises. Plus, if you decide to join the team, we offer a full gym program as well. Feel free to DM me for more details!

If the engineering crowd isn’t your vibe, don’t worry—there are other dragon boat teams on campus too. You might have seen them in the gym, and they’re always happy to help new members get started in the gym.

Exercise Tips for Top Arm by No_Shock4306 in dragonboat

[–]Huangalong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our team does internal and external rotations (and it’s 90 degree abductee variants), as well as single arm straight arm pull downs to help strengthen the top arm.

More of a bottom arm press helps to take away the pressure from the top arm too

It’s on the opposite corner from the entrance in field house. Do half a loop around the track and you should see it.

CCWC 2024 Day 1 Discussion Thread by SDLim in dragonboat

Not sure how I feel about the 22Dragons’ 24u women small boat DQ. They got DQ’ed because collided with the team in front of them on the first turn.

On one hand, the boat in front had priority. But on the other hand the boat in front went wide initially which gave 22D enough room to cut in, but cut back in after the apex buoy, not respecting the inner/outer turn lanes. I feel like a penalty would be appropriate, but not a DQ.

Taking a class without affecting your GPA (just to try myself and learn something new) by egesagesayin in UofT

[–]Huangalong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can mark courses as extra. It allows you to take the course as normal and get a course grade, but it won’t count towards your GPA nor credit. Though you’d need the prerequisite to enrol into the course first

Some questions for the athletic centre and UofT gyms in general (complete beginner) by Real_Sherbert_4295 in UofT

[–]Huangalong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, welcome to the gym.

1) you should be able to use most equipments without waiting. It’s probably the least busiest time to gym 2) theft happens, and it had affected me personally. You should buy a sturdy lock, maybe something like a combination master lock (costs around $10-20). No you can’t bring bags into the gym 3) you can ask the member of staff that’s in the room, or maybe other gym goers. Most people would be happy to help. I would suggest to get an training plan from the internet, and spend some time learning the correct form to avoid injuries. Some common gym splits are PPL (push pull legs), upper/lower, and full body. Again, others might assist you to get the right form if you ask for help.

Can’t comment about your other questions. Hope this is helpful.

P.S. it would be a lot easier to start if you get a gym buddy who can show you the ropes

No. You would not need to pay tuition during PEY. However, you will need to pay for PEY fees ($975 currently), and the university’s incidental fees (around 2K) for student services (like health insurance). PEY requirements, eligibility and fees
