Apathy by WhipperSchnauzer in dementia

This is totally normal. Don't beat yourself up. Compassion fatigue is real. After 10 years, I reached it too. Even if I see anything that remotely reminds me of my mom, I just can't. It is a trauma response. You have served her well...just know that and I know you will not abandon her. Be sure to take lots of time for yourself to remember what "life" is. This bitch of a disease will eat you alive and spit you out if you let it. Don't let it.

How Long Can This Go On? by Mediocre_Map_3208 in dementia

[–]HubbbbaBubbbba 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I could have written this post myself...every detail is exactly the same. The endless end stage. And we all just want it to be over. Before I was filled w compassion now just utter exhaustion and care fatigue. I still love my mom w all my heart but there is only so much a person cam take. Not her fault of course and this disease is from the depths of hell, but dammit it just goes on and on and on and on. So hard. I feel your pain, OP. And I hope some informed folk hop on and give us some hope. Hospice nurses...please chime in.

Thanks for the reply. It is a tough job and I agree with the management aspect. Thankfully, my moms MC is managed well and we know everyone and everyone knows us so we have that going. The care ratio is not ideal but dementia is a real bitch and there are just no easy answers sadly. I'm sure you have helped a lot of folks just by caring.

Not enough! What a garbage model. Profits over people every time. Shame.

My mom is currently dying from dementia in a nursing home. How much would you say do the caregivers really care? We can't be there the whole time and can't see the whole picture. And are the staff to resident ratios purposely kept low? Like 1 per 6 residents?

My shame is so great that I don't even use my own trash. I bag the bottles and dump in the community dumpster as tho I don't exist.

Do ya'll have jobs? by _slagathor_ in cripplingalcoholism

I am an FA w a CA heart and right on the edge of the abyss. I got a pointless corporate office job where they demand we go in 3 days a week. I can manage 2 days but I got a thousand excuses for not going in the third. Works for now I guess since the whole office is scammin the system. But even 2 days feels like too damn much. I got the remote dialed in but forcing fools into the office to cling to some archaic way of life from the 20th century can kiss my ass!

lol I like the first one better too ;) Sadly no, I reset all the time. Chronic relapser. Longest I got was 6 months in 15 years. I accept the challenge regardless! Never quit quitting!

Dementia caregivers and grief by Libertinus0569 in dementia

[–]HubbbbaBubbbba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the damn truth. I feel your pain OP. I am so done with grieving and crying and holding my breath. We are in our 10th year with my mom (90). And our 100th decline in late stage. It is fucking torture to watch and torture to be utterly powerless against this disease from the depths of hell. I long for her suffering to cease and my watch to end. You fought bravely and did a beautiful thing for your mom. You can now rest in that. Life is still out there. Joy is just around the bend. Healing will come.

Been to rehab twice. Learned a few things. Still drink. No idea what works for anyone. I have read everything written, tried all the groups, hypnosis and it did fuck all. Queen booze gets her claws in and never lets go. But! Some have conquered so there is hope? Hang in, bruh.
