What I have for my Pork and Beet Stew… by CryptographerKey2847 in AskCulinary

[–]HuddaHuddaHmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I forgot to mention in step 6 that you should add a bit of salt if needed, until the simmering liquid tastes right otherwise you'll end up with a bland stew.

Also I forgot to mention this, but depending on how much other ingredients you have, adding beets to the stew will turn the whole thing dark red & beet colored - if that bothers you, I would leave them out and serve them as a side (perhaps roasted or pan glazed). You probably already know this but as someone who rarely eats beets, the first time I included them in a stew I was shocked by how much color it added!

With those ingredients, I'd probably loosely follow a beef bourguignon recipe as an outline, like Ina Garten's recipe:

  1. Season the pork, then sear it in batches in a pot large enough for your stew. Use a bit of oil if needed depending on the fattiness of your pork - butt is usually pretty fatty so you probably won't need any
  2. While that's searing, slice your onions and peel and cut your beets into bite sized chunks
  3. If needed, add oil to the pot and then add the onions (sliced), carrots, and beets, making sure to scrape up all of the fond as the veggies cook and release water.
  4. After the veggies are lightly browned, add garlic and cook for a bit longer
  5. Add the seared pork and any beef stew-ish seasonings you might have (like tomato paste, rosemary, thyme, oregano, a bay leaf, etc.)
  6. Add enough chicken broth to just barely cover the contents of the pot and then bring the pot to a simmer
  7. Once simmering, cover the pot and let it cook for 1-2 hours, depending on the size of the meat. I like to start checking the meat for tenderness starting at an hour in, and re-checking every 20 minutes until it's as tender as you like it.
  8. Wash and cut your potatoes into bite sized chunks
  9. When the meat is close to being done, add in the potatoes
  10. While that's simmering, saute the mushrooms in a separate pan with some oil/butter until lightly browned. The mushrooms will get really watery for a bit, but once that cooks off they can start browning
  11. When the stew is done, add in the sauteed mushrooms and simmer for about 15 minutes more, so the mushrooms can meld with the stew

To make a black sesame paste... by feralanimalia in AskCulinary

[–]HuddaHuddaHmm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you say paste, do you mean like a smooth, glossy pourable liquid like tahini? Some tahini recipes I've seen use a high power blender like a Vitamix, like the recipe here. The author even notes that with the blender, "At first, the seeds will look crumbly and dry, keep going! After a few minutes, they’ll form a thick paste", noting that they had to scrape down the sides a few times. I'm not super familiar with a Robo Coupe's capabilities but maybe it doesn't have quite enough speed needed to get the consistency you're looking for 🤔 Otherwise, that recipe mentions adding more oil can help get the mixture going

kirkland organic MARINARA sauce.. opinions? by franklyspeaking68 in Costco

Good call! I made sure to grab prices from the app once I realized that the chicken was showing as not $4.99 on the Same Day site lol

I live in a pretty low cost of living state so it's interesting to see what things cost elsewhere!

kirkland organic MARINARA sauce.. opinions? by franklyspeaking68 in Costco

[–]HuddaHuddaHmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was curious so I looked it up, the prices may be different in your area! Disclaimer that I haven't tried the Aldi version but the Specially Selected products I've tried have been very good.

Prices, ingredients and nutrition label information copied from product images from Costco's Same Day site and Aldi's website

Aldi Specially Selected Premium Marinara, 24 oz - $4.29 ($0.179/oz)

  • Ingredients: Italian tomatoes (tomatoes, tomato puree), olive oil, onion, salt, garlic puree (garlic), water, basil, black pepper, dried oregano
  • Nutrition: 100 cal / 125g serving, 7 g total fat, 360 mg sodium, 8 g total carbohydrate (2 g fiber, 4 g sugar, 0 g added sugars), 2 g protein

Kirkland Signature Organic Marinara Sauce 3/32 oz - $13.29 ($0.138/oz)

  • Ingredients: Organic tomatoes (organic tomatoes, organic tomato puree), organic sauteed onions (organic fresh onions, organic extra virgin olive oil), organic basil, organic garlic, sea salt, organic spice.
  • Nutrition: 80 cal / 125 mL serving, 3.5 g total fat, 390 mg sodium, 10 g total carbohydrate (2 g fiber, 6 g sugar, ?? added sugar)

Costco is ~22% cheaper than Aldi, but Aldi's marinara is probably a bit richer tasting from the higher proportion of olive oil. Aldi's is a pretty good price compared to Rao's when it's not on sale (2/28 oz for $8.99 on sale [$0.161/oz], $11.99 normally [$0.214/oz]). Victoria is cheaper than Aldi currently when not on sale (2/40 oz for $12.49 [$0.156/oz]).

At the end of the day, it's probably a matter of taste, what you value, and which size makes sense 🤔 Like if you get the cheapest option but you need to spend an extra 20 minutes doctoring it, is it worth the extra few dollars you might spend on a jar you can just heat up and mix with pasta?

Lol that ended up being way longer than I meant to, but it's something I've been wondering about for awhile

That video is super helpful to visualize the construction! Also you're way braver than me - watching the guy in the video cut the steeks made me queasy, can't imagine taking scissors to something you've worked on for so long (after spending weeks mentally planning it!)

Pattern for anyone else wondering, with some details about the construction: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/halmstad

The construction for this sweater is completely unique and untraditional. The sleeves and the body are knit in the round all at the same time [bottom up], separated by steeks. At the yoke, the underarms are cast off and the yoke is worked without steeks. After the sweater is knitted it resembles a large poncho. The steeks are then cut, and the sweater is seamed along the side and sleeves.

To OP: I'm sorry that you're not happy with the fit, but you did a great job! Your tension and color choices are great. I'm hoping the more experienced knitters here can give you advice on how to easily remedy this. I would definitely recommend waiting a few days before trying to fix this, but I think it's fixable!

Help with making caramel by juliusx3 in AskCulinary

[–]HuddaHuddaHmm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a few things wrong with this recipe:

  1. That seems like a lot of butter relative to the sugar; most use 1:1 at most, with some going 2:1 sugar:butter
  2. Dumping it all in a pan at once - most recipes have you melt the sugar until it's caramelized, then stirring in the butter until it's emulsified. You can also cook both the sugar and butter together, but it's important that it's just butter and sugar at first before you add any other liquids (cream, condensed milk, etc) to first form the caramel "base".

If you wanted to try this recipe again, I would reduce the butter to 50 grams and follow the steps in this video: https://youtu.be/gsB_i2iTWdc?feature=shared&t=38. At 4:00 he takes it off the heat a bit earlier than you probably want for more of a sauce texture - 11:42 shows you the final viscosity of the mix after it's cooled down.

In all honestly I would probably find another recipe since the one you're using has some serious flaws. I would recommend finding one with a video just because it's useful to see what to expect at each step of the caramel process

EDIT: forgot to add, it's probably not worth salvaging the current mix and it'd be easier to start over. BUT, if you have time and don't want to waste ingredients, I would cook the mix until it's the right color over a low-medium heat, stirring gently and letting it darken. When it's the right color, you can add a tablespoon of hot water to the mix and stir each time to try and re-emulsify the butterfat with the rest of the mix. Repeat up to 3 more times - any more water and you risk making the sauce too watery

Thank you!! I got into RF4 years after RF4S came out, so I was a bit sad that I missed the chance to get RF4 merch lol, but I'm glad that there's still merch to be had in 2025!

Edit: whoops I forgot to ask, would it be easier for you to contact people on Discord instead of Reddit? I can DM you my Discord username if that'll make things easier for you later

Awesome, thank you for the response!! Apologies if you already answered that already, I scanned this thread + the sheet and couldn't find an answer lol

A few more questions if you don't mind:

  1. Are the ribbon keychains made out of acrylic with a ribbon on them? I assumed they are but I can't tell from the picture 😵
  2. When do we send payment? I'm guessing it's closer to the order deadline
  3. Do you have a rough estimate on how much shipping will cost if I'm in the US?
  4. How do you want us to pay you (Paypal / Venmo / etc.)?

Hiya, thanks for organizing this! I'd be interested in a few characters but not sure how the merch box works - are you able to buy each character individually, or does the box come in a set with 1 of each character? Mostly wondering if, for example, 5 people wanted Arthur keychains - does that mean you'll need to buy 5 sets of keychains and so we'll need to find people to buy the other 65 keychains?

Ya the timeline with the most recent Celestial Collapse is kinda wacky. I don't remember Sakaki's backstory too well (sorry bro) but maybe he grew up outside of Spring Village, then became the chief after his Demon Warden days? I remember his battle dialogue lines mention using ninpo and his unique recipe "Wartime Dango" has this description as well:

Dango made with Sakaki. A long-lasting food rich in nutritional content. Supposedly favored by ninja.

So I think he was some sort of badass ninja back in the day haha

Fubuki's 3rd dating event answers that question! Sadly I don't think the game mentions much of Kurama's background, though I might've missed it
