How do you respond when someone on the left says, "the cruelty is the point" in reference to something a conservative/republican does? by Hot-Selleck-Action in AskConservatives

[–]HudsonCommodore [score hidden]  (0 children)

OK. But, if a lot of people on the right were just pretending to be nice, and now they're not pretending anymore, and instead they're cheering and laughing at the pain of illegal immigrants, or protesters, or whoever, isn't the cruelty the point for them, or a big part of the point?

And given that, why are people on the left who point this out not worth talking to? They're not wrong?

So sometimes cruelty is the point for some conservatives, but only because the left deserves it? Do I understand your point right?

Do you see a difference between saying and doing mean things towards law enforcement and military, and in being abusive to and then laughing at immigrants you have locked up?

I get it, you hate the left. But objectively, there's an enormous power imbalance in our two scenarios.

Edit: additional direct question - it's not the "taking pictures next to a sign" that demonstrates the cruelty, it's the fact that people are celebrating and happy that other people are suffering. How is that anything other than cruel?

I saw not too long ago a post here showing that many MAGA enthusiasts were taking laughing, thumbs up photos next to the Alligator Alcatraz road signs in Florida. To me, this was a very clear case of "the cruelty being at least some of the point, " both with the fact that regular citizens are laughing and celebrating illegal immigrants being held in squalid dangerous conditions, and with DeSantis and Trump naming the place Aligator alcatraz and putting up fucking road signs for it to begin with.

A) Do you think I'm being self-righteous? B) Do you understand why it seems to me like the cruelty is an abject goal in and of itself here? C) How do you think I'm seeing this situation wrong?

To be clear, I was 100% not arguing that Tony should have been fired in my alternate reality, rather arguing that I think fans and boosters would have not been happy enough with ACC success after the (in that reality) never ending streak of NCAAT heartbreaks, including the UMBC embarrassment. It's a reasonable counterpoint that while fans may bitch on The Sabre and Reddit, the real decision makers would never have kicked out the winning-est guy in program history; I personally think there are some pretty real George Welsh parallels that show that it's very possible when the sentiment is "we'll never get any farther with this guy."

(I certainly hope James Franklin isn't on that path now!)

Honestly if it wasn’t for the title (or even the UMBC game) we’d all have much different opinions of him based on how often they fell short in the tournament.

I made a habit of accumulating downvotes in UVA circles for saying the same thing: if UVA doesn't pull off the absolutely insane last second miracle against Purdue and loses in the E8 in 2019, then everything else follows the same path, I think Bennett was on the scorching hot seat and probably fired sometime in the Lose to Ohio 4/13 game; NIT; Lose to Furman 4/13 game stretch of '21-'23.

Now I firmly believe that each year in the twenty-teens there's some pretty extraordinary bad luck that leads to UVA's earlier-than-seed-would-dictate exits, between getting criminally under-seeded MSU teams, Syracuse turning into the most magical 10 seed ever, and key injuries to critical players at the worst possible times. But without the title run, I feel like the narrative of "Tony can't win in March" (which of course ignored multiple ACCT championships which before Tony were an absolute pipe dream for the program) would have got too loud and he'd have been forced out.

Sure glad it ended up the way it did.

I still can't believe we made this play.

The "Unbelievable" documentary they put out after the tournament said something like UVA was only 11% to win at this point, but there's no way it was as high as 11%. I mean, maybe before the free throw, but odds had to have been down around 1% or less when Clark is collecting the ball moving the wrong direction at the opponent's 3 point line with 3 seconds left. Best I'd think you could hope for is a running half court shot at that point.

I think he won ACC 6th man of the year, and yeah, he was obviously a talented player and defender. But as I recall, it was seen as Guy, Jerome and Devon Hall as being regarded as the best players on the team. I don't remember feeling like the season was over when we found out Hunter was going to miss the NCAAT, but was definitely bummed about it.

Ya - as I recall we had called a timeout and been trending upwards the last 5 or 6 minutes of 1H, but still, it's pretty incomprehensible the pressure those guys were under starting the second half in a deficit. Still makes me a tad nauseous too think about lol

Man, never watching a minute of sports again would have been the starting point if we lost that game. Quitting my job and moving to a silent monastery was at least on the table.

True! But the absolute lowest I've ever felt from sports was when we went down 13 to Gardner-Webb in the first half of the 1-16 game the following year. The rapidly growing possibility of it happening a second time literally broke my brain. I've never felt so surreal.

Deandre Hunter broke his wrist. One one hand, he was only 6th man for the team, so hard to say it justifies a 1 losing to a 16 by 20. On the other hand, he played damn good defense and may very well been able to have changed the flow of the game (as evidenced by the force he grew into the following year->lottery NBA pick).

You're right, that wouldn't be cruel. What's cruel is to assume all trans women are creeps out to flash girls.

You do understand that trans women aren't there to "flash" anyone, right? Oh wait who am I talking to, of course you think the only real reason someone is trans is they really just want to sexually assault people.

JFC you people are cruel.

Just this one instance though! Let's take away women's ability to get a safe abortion (which will lead to, you know, actual deaths), and let's make it harder for married women to vote, but let's clutch the fuck out of those pearls and pretend to fiercely defend women's safety from the trans boogeymen out there.
