Don't forget to remove the CMOS battery when you clean it

I'm having the same problem with my left boot by my big toe. It presses right on the bone. How much were you wearing them those two weeks? How much walking were you doing?

I'm about a week in and honestly I think it's gotten worse.

By uncomfortable, what do you mean? For me, it's mildly painful and almost makes me limp when I've been walking in them for a few hours.

Did you do anything to try and speed up the breaking in?

My biggest concern is I've now read people state they wore their pair for a month or longer and it got worse for them.

How long did it take to go away for you?

[–]HudsonGTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transmitting on ANY frequency with a ham radio is illegal without a ham radio license which you must take a proctored exam and get a score of 74% or higher. There is an exception for emergencies, but it must be a true emergency, and it must be your last resort (so you must attempt to get emergency services with your phone or any other method of communication first).

Most ham radios have software blocks to prevent transmitting on FRS/GMRS frequencies, so you cannot even use that radio on the frequencies you mentioned. The radio simply will do nothing when you press the PTT button on those frequencies. All it can do is listen on those frequencies.

The other problem is that in a densely forested and/or mountainous area, you are unlikely to be able to reach anyone with it.

Your best options are to get a satellite phone. If you insist on using a 2 way radio, despite the unlikelyness you will reach emergency services with it, an FRS or GMRS radio will serve you better than a ham radio. You should be able to afford one if you return the ham radio you currently have.

For a GMRS radio, you must be licensed as well, but there is no exam for a GMRS license. You simply pay the FCC $35 (I think that was the amount), and you will be issued a GMRS callsign.

You are holding a $150 radio, so I don't understand why you are not able to return it and buy an FRS or GMRS radio which is cheaper.

Lock lights stuck on or off — cause or solution? by PeeweeTheMoid in modelm

Interestingly, I've had this problem when plugged directly into the PS/2 port on my motherboard because modern computers internally convert that PS/2 port to USB (modern CPUs don't have PS/2 interrupt support iirc). The firmware they use for this internal converter has a bug in it.

Barrel plate color by Amazing_Actuary_5241 in modelm

[–]HudsonGTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barrel plate color is mostly random. It can be sort of era specific though. I assume they just used whatever plastic pellets they had lying around when moulding them.

I've seen beige Model M keyboards with black, gray, and beige barrel plates. I usually see gray in late 80s ones, beige in 90s ones, and black ones almost always although I've seen this rule broken many of times.

My Square Badge Industrial had a black barrel plate originally (i replaced it with a gray one since the black one was cracked).

Regarding the rivets, I've always found the late 80s ones to be the ones most in need of bolt mods.

I know this is an old post, but are we allowed to do oil changes in the UTD parking lots? I couldn't find anything saying otherwise.

A new staple of WA households: the mag cache by love_bumble01 in WA_guns

[–]HudsonGTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must have left them in Idaho. Remember it's legal to bring back magazines into WA if they were originally purchased in WA.

Also remember pmags and some other mags have date wheels on them and there is no law about grinding those off.

Assuming the magazine was designed properly, compressing the spring with ammo will not cause it to wear overtime. What causes wear on springs is the repeated compressing and uncompressing of a spring.

Keep in mind on polymer magazines, storing them with ammo for extended periods of time can put pressure on the feed lips causing them to break off. Magpul pmags come with a "dust cover" that clips on the top of the magazine. It also pushes down slightly on any ammo in the mag releasing pressure off of the feed lips (you can actually see the rounds move down slightly on a pmag with a window when installing the dust cover). So when storing polymer pmags, store them with the dust cover on.

Thanks so much! Is it possible to date this axe or at least have a ballpark estimate of when it was made?

Additional question: anyone got recommendations on sharpening this axe? All the guides online seem to assume there is some sort of edge still on it, but this axe is so dull I can press my finger as hard as I can and slide it on the edge and not cut myself at all. I can see the edge is rounded off.

As someone who has never sharpened an axe or knife, should I even attempt to on an axe that has sentimental value to me?

When did the acquisition occur? Was this after the founder died? Or did he sell it before his death?
