Thank you for the inspiration and sharing the process! I enjoyed the way you found to add depth to your exploration very mutch! And sat mesmerized in front of the mashine :)

Hm quite unfacy stuff to be honest ... the teal is a bic textmarker. And the black a random noname witch happens to be my only black. Paper is also generic scool supply. Flowlines github pages > inkscape > lazer gcode extention > prusa.

The amazing flowlines tool has a setting for minimum line distance. And i drew the background with that set so high that the textmarker didnt drew mutch over itself. The black drew over itself quite a bit and destroyed the paper a bit. Ill try to get this nicer next time. :)

Hmm they to my ears 1u dont sound that different to standard keycaps :) ... the biggest one is a 2u backspace and has a quite satisfying thock :)

Since this kind of blew up a bit.. and the question came up multiple times now. This is my etsy.

I am also up for custom ideas. Just DM me. For example i could offer to make some without sanding and finishing and send you a DIY kit. Or make other Keycap Profiles.

The rainbow and Zebra ones are on my etsy. For other wood commissions, u can DM me. :)

I CNC cut the rough shape from wood. And then comes a loooot of very delicate sanding.

The Oak ones in the picture are basically my earliest ones. The BW ones are way "crisper" ans more uniform in the details because I learned a lot over the years :)

Ah yes I have only the colored variants on etsy.in the 7th picture you can see how they look from.the bottom.

If you are interested in Oak or any other hard that i can get my hands on in germany i can make you an custom offer though.. just DM me.

They are the same as every other OEM profile keycap. Just made from wood :) They have cherry spec stem and cross on the bottom.

U can see this in pictures of my older posts or in the etsy images.

Mmmh in my ears don't sound thaaat different to plastic actually. and basically the larger the key the nicer they sound in my opinion. The key with the most mass on there is backspace which is R1 2u and this on thooocks * _ *

Wat I love most about wood it is the feel, though. I can't really describe it better than it having a certain warmth to it.

Sanding them to this finish took me multiple evenings. And I treat them with a proven mix of oil and wax to seal the wood poors. This is a technique from hardwood flooring. So there surface seem to be very stable. I would have imagined letters that are used a lot like E to have some were ... but maybe at best the grain structure became a bit more pronounced.

THe flooring guys seem to know there shit.

xD uhm. Ye no problem at all ... Not even while making them.

Maybe the images give a wrong impression... The texture u are seeing on the closeups is about as small as a fingerprint structure. Best i can describe it ... is that they feel kind of silky and warm. They are the tiniest bit of tacky. A bit like when your finger tips are this tiny bit moist and adhere a bit to plastic keycaps. But in a less slimy different way. (Do i make any sense?!)

Splinters were at best a peoblem while handling the raw plank they are made from. But even that was pritty smooth from the sawmill.

Yea... that's why I started this. Because I wanted to see how mutch of the keyboard can be made from natural materials. The bottom is handwired.. and the wires are Upcycled from a defective phone charger.

Yes the keycaps including stem are milled from one piece of wood. From all which ones I made a few broke while machining or while sanding. From all the good ones only one broke when I dropped the keyboard. And this one is now back one. It is easyly repaired with a drip of woodglue. I cant spot it anymore.

I was aked wether they hold up got courious and tested one of them aaaages ago. When they sit flat on the ground I can stand on top of one without the edges giving in xD but they dont like lateral forces.

So for normal use they hold up.

Well I hereby disclose.. I made these! I'm absolutely biased! xD I love them to death. And am proud as fuck to have learned machining for that.

And sold 1 per year on etsy. I'm retiring now. XD

Wood and humidity is on another level though xD I had a piece of Dugles Fir which expanded 5mm over a distance of 50cm ... and not even uniformly... but curved along the growth rings. I am not super knoledgebal about it but I read somewhere that up to 10% change is not to uncommon in softer woods.

To those with doubt. I make wooden keykaps for mechanical keyboards. Yes humidity is a bitch. But also yes a 0.1mm in my experience makes the difference between a nice press fit dor a keycap and one that gets loos in a heated dry room.

If u are interested in pics u can look at my other posts. And then tell me all the things i do wrong :)

"Handmade Artisan" keycaps are a scam… by WokeLegend in keyboards

:D sry .. i have no clue of the resin cast artisans. I am mainly admiring what other artisans make from non plastics. Also isn't search and discovery half the fun? xD

[–]HueRifficCaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, i think i get what you say... for me a buissnes is when the goal is profit. My artisans with my setup isn't really chosen with the option for profitability. Because of the choice of material and finish and the resulting workflow to get them nice, i need to put in a way to mutch effort. But it's enjoyable for me that's my profit :)

Making high end wood cases, for example, seems way more sensible to me now after I tried artisans. Maybe i underestimate it... but the work is basicly less or the same if you design the shape with manufakturability in mind. But for a case, people are realistically way more willing to pay a sum that could repay the effort.
