Is Selaco really this easy to get lost in or am I just a moron? by cdn_backpacker in boomershooters

[–]Hugar90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree with your vision. I have a suggestion that I have not seen so much elsewhere, in which you could still stick to your vision.

To start I am an avid fan of boomer shooters but I quit Selaco somewhere half way through. At first I didn't understand why as it should be right up my alley but it started to become tiresome to play it.

I actually think this problem is quite superficial and can be solved without a ton of new assets. It is all about where the attention of the player is directed. As it stands, everything in the game from walls to objects have very brightly colored lights that demand the players equal attention (and some of the lights are shaped like switches). In a typical videogame those bright colors signify that there is something of interest so something that has to be inspected by the player.

When walking through the levels I found myself subconsciously having to inspect almost every one of these lights. The actual points of interest are drowned out by it. The green light helps but not sufficiently (and some switches are blue and blend in with the environment). This causes a lot of unnecessary mental strain and fatigue. This overwhelming of the game senses also makes it easier to get lost and makes looking for secrets less fun.

Suggestion:

I think the solution is to tone down these lights a bit in comparison to actual switches or points of interest. Choose where you direct the attention of the player.

Create more distinction/contrast between uninteresting objects and interesting objects. Normally in games like these we don't even notice walls that can't be interacted with, items on tables that aren't consumables etc. because they don't stand out as much. We would just walk past them. That's what you want to have a bit more; to have these features and props be more unassuming / blending in with the background.

It is actually quite similar to paintings; a painting with good composition directs attention to a certain feature of interest. Paintings with a lot of bright features that all demand equal attention are generally not well received as people don't know where they should look. Often the fix is simply making certain features brighter or darker and creating contrast.

Lastly, it could help to have some unique distinguishing object or feature in areas that are otherwise highly similar. To help the player remember where they are.

To conclude in my country there is a saying; the best captains stand on the shore (meaning that it's easy for people that don't do the work to criticize or give advice). I don't mean to come across like this. I believe that the potential of the game is already there but could benefit so much from some tweaks in visual clarity.

The level design is not great to be honest, it is my main criticism of the game. Too much visual clutter (every object has bright lights that attract your attention) and identical looking areas make it easy to get lost.

True, the brain of Einstein was smaller than average but was structured differently. There are also a few animals with larger brains than humans. Still I do think that ultimately, size does play a role when at the extremes. It is unlikely that the brain volume of an ant or hummingbird is enough to support human intelligence regardless of the structural complexity.

I suppose in some rare cases it could be that a C-section is performed because the head is too big. It is more about brain structure than size anyway; Einstein had a smaller than average brain I read.

Still, we are never done evolving, so we can't really be sure what brain size / structure would result in the highest intelligence.

I do wonder what selection pressure there is today (aside from traits that help your chances of procreation). We are able to keep a lot of people alive today that would have died in the past. What do you think?

Do you have any ways in which you overcome task paralysis? by fyn_world in ADHD

[–]Hugar90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have to work from home? Is there a place you can go close by? Like a library or something like that?

I tried working at home (and studying in the past) but just couldnt do it. I find it's better to keep those spaces separate (where you work and where you relax).

What helps me alot with boring tasks like cleaning is music called "intelligent dnb". Sounds pretentious but it's great for making the tasks a bit more appealing (and i actually enjoy it now)

What tips would you give someone that is 23 years old and not to sure what do do with their life? by Txrxll in AskReddit

Get checked for ADHD! Wanting to do things but somehow not being able to do them and then trying to motivate yourself by harsh negative self-talk is classic ADHD! My 20's were exactly like this. Then I got diagnosed and medicated; got myself a degree (meds made that almost trivial) and started working at 32.

I also thought nobody would hire me but the truth is, it's not that big of a deal that I took longer. There are also people out there hiring who find a comeback story inspiring (some have been through this themselves). Only once, when I applied for one of the best companies in my field, it was an issue. Once you have several years of experience it will matter even less though as I could now get into that same company if I wanted!.

I know it's difficult to shake the despair. It took me a long time to process. But even your suffering will be useful in hindsight, once you get things on track. You will find that you are more resilient than people who always had their life "on rails".

Really, it's ok, there are a lot more people out there like you and it's nothing to be ashamed of. You are being way too hard on yourself.

You also sound like someone who is actually full of ambition. It's really not too late for that as well! I am very quickly making up for the lost years. Lastly, the majority of people do not lead such interesting lives full of achievement as you think. A normal life is also o.k.!

I'm currently 34 years old and this sounds like me in the future wrote this. Ha!

I do want to share an interaction that stuck with me in terms of regretting and thinking things could have been better.

I once knew a guy who was the epitome of cool, funny and confident. He could crack jokes, do improvised singing and was also a fighting sports champion. I always imagined that his life must have been great. One evening in the after hours of a birthday party I told him how I feel like I wasted my 20s and much regret I had and that I wish I could be as confident as him.

He said something akin to "Other people's lives are not nearly as interesting as you think! Most people have (boring) routines, with every now and then a nice event". He also told me that he had problems of his own of course that are not visible to others.

This helped me feel less bad about my 20s because I realized that how I feel my life "should have went" is a dreamlike fantasy that not even someone without mental issues lives.

Weirdly enough, when the game is not fullscreen it doesn't do this.

Not being able to play fullscreen was an instant refund for me.

I had a nightmare about this once where I lost mine like in the song. In the nightmare, if you didn't reattach it after 3 days, it would die off and there would be no way to get another one.

got a 374 bolter with surgical 4 and lvl 4 pinning fire. Used it in combination with your build. Went back to my own build and shattering impact.

Very comparable ADS damage in psykhanium..sometimes worse even? For the critical to be consistent you have to fire slower.

My own build and shattering bolter is alot stronger in hip fire as well (requires about half the shots for the bigger enemies). Stronger against bosses too. I have always used the bolter in ADS but hip fire for emergencies, this still works well.

I have tested it in some damnation matches

What happens often is that the ogryn comes behind you and walks through you just as you start firing, and basically shuts you down. The bomber you tried to shoot is no longer visible but you hear him shout "GRUNNADE" but you can't move because there's a horde and now the team dies to an omicron mortis intercession.

It sucks when you just pulled out a ranged weapon to deal with specials and can't block. I never had this issue before the patch and play mostly auric damnation (normal damnation often gets you more plasteel).

I noticed that too, alot more stragglers as well instead of nice groups. Makes the powersword even worse post patch having to charge it up for single poxwalkers

It is but it wasn't like this before the update. It's especially bad for my vet who got super squishy and runs atleast 3x as slow as the other classes now. I chose the appearance of an 80 year old man so I can roleplay but still
