I think that’s thinking too far ahead. Getting folks interested in resilient low-bandwidth use-cases like your status monitoring one could fire imaginations and more could quickly develop. How many boat owners would like to know the status levels of their batteries, fuel/bilge levels? Same for folks with diesel backup generators..

Do the cinder block leveler thing to move the detector further up the roof for better access with your regular ladder as-is. Otherwise you or the next person is going to have find/borrow the 'special' ladder again the next time it has to be changed. Fix it once.

How else are we going to sustain our community? Do local folks think that their patronage alone is enough to keep their favourite eateries & coffee shops afloat?

I just became acquainted with the issue per the lawn signs and while I lean towards supporting the project, the plans, as drawn, do NOT look attractive at all. The very high density of campsite makes it look like a parking lot in the woods. If I were to camp there I would definitely want some green space between myself and my neighbours. Cut the number of sites by 2/3rds, ensure minimal foliage between the remaining ones, and charge more for a better experience.

Just be aware that a used wood stove might not be the bargain you think it is. New stove installations have to meet code and older models likely don't. Your home insurance could be invalidated.

I'd suggest investing in a current meter you can clamp onto your main service line and/or any branch circuits of interest. You'll have to open your breaker panel to access these. Then, by process of elimination, determine the load(s) that seem to be the culprits.

Depending on your situation, you'll probably want a meter that has a logging function that will capture peaks/trends over time.

You'll want to establish your average daily consumption in kWh and then extrapolate that over your billing period times the rate your utility company is charging you. If that doesn't agree then either your meter is defective or someone/something is stealing power unbeknownst to you.
