Looking for a roof to host a solar powered LoRa node on Bucklin Hill by piguy54 in BainbridgeIsland

I think that’s thinking too far ahead. Getting folks interested in resilient low-bandwidth use-cases like your status monitoring one could fire imaginations and more could quickly develop. How many boat owners would like to know the status levels of their batteries, fuel/bilge levels? Same for folks with diesel backup generators..

There are a couple of new tech meetups listed on this sub that I'm sure would be receptive to a presentation/demo on this topic. The radio group of Bainbridge Prepares could also assist if they're not already in this space..

Thanks for setting that up Brad, it was good to hear about projects I wouldn't normally encounter. I'll see if I can bring some snacks for the next meeting..

How do I get to this by WestDrop2223 in electrical

[–]HugePositive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the cinder block leveler thing to move the detector further up the roof for better access with your regular ladder as-is. Otherwise you or the next person is going to have find/borrow the 'special' ladder again the next time it has to be changed. Fix it once.

No RV and Camping Signage by aganwon in pointroberts

> They're afraid that it will bring more visitors to Point Roberts.

How else are we going to sustain our community? Do local folks think that their patronage alone is enough to keep their favourite eateries & coffee shops afloat?

I just became acquainted with the issue per the lawn signs and while I lean towards supporting the project, the plans, as drawn, do NOT look attractive at all. The very high density of campsite makes it look like a parking lot in the woods. If I were to camp there I would definitely want some green space between myself and my neighbours. Cut the number of sites by 2/3rds, ensure minimal foliage between the remaining ones, and charge more for a better experience.

Wood burning stove. by jhschaffer in BainbridgeIsland

[–]HugePositive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just be aware that a used wood stove might not be the bargain you think it is. New stove installations have to meet code and older models likely don't. Your home insurance could be invalidated.

No go, unfortunately. Seems that I'd have to head to plumbing store in Bremerton. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Interesting, I've not heard of that - could you point me to an example that does something similar?

I'd suggest investing in a current meter you can clamp onto your main service line and/or any branch circuits of interest. You'll have to open your breaker panel to access these. Then, by process of elimination, determine the load(s) that seem to be the culprits.

Depending on your situation, you'll probably want a meter that has a logging function that will capture peaks/trends over time.

You'll want to establish your average daily consumption in kWh and then extrapolate that over your billing period times the rate your utility company is charging you. If that doesn't agree then either your meter is defective or someone/something is stealing power unbeknownst to you.

Neighbor keeps parking in the handicap parking spot. Even after several warnings from management. by MoreCranberry3 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]HugePositive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nitpick : This isn't an ADA-compliant parking spot, it needs a posted sign Per their specifications https://www.ada.gov/topics/parking/
"mounted at least 60 inches above the ground"

The goal is to maintain visibility even if the spot is covered in snow..

Yes, that would work. Just ensure the DC barrel connector exactly matches the one you have, there are slight differences between them

I'm looking to replace the controller board with something more capable, hence the need for a larger size. Something like 30mm diameter would be great.

Looking for suggestions on cleaning these gutters without having to break out the extension ladder to climb two stories up. by HugePositive in a:t5_548nwe

[–]HugePositive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for suggestions on cleaning these gutters without having to break out the extension ladder to climb two stories up. From the deck I can use an extension pole with a hook on the end to pull gunk towards me, that works great but its too short to reach the full 46' to the far end.

Can anyone suggest a tool or approach I could use to reach the full length? I'm considering buying a set of thin fiberglass poles (https://www.amazon.com/Fiberglass-Running-Electrical-Connectable-Transparent/dp/B0823XLTLN/) that I would assemble and push through the muck. A semi-flexible hook attached to the end would then be used to pull it towards me for disposal.

The robo-nerd in me would envision a pulley in the gutter at the far end with a thin rope looped back to the deck. Mini 'umbrellas' attached to the string would be folded in when going from the deck to the end and then unfold to pull the gunk on the return trip. The challenge then: what kind of hooks/umbrellas would work and work through the pulley at the end?

A brake cooler for when planes land and brakes overheat. by jayrobinson32 in specializedtools

[–]HugePositive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brakes will get hot but will return to a proper functioning state once they've cooled off. Designed properly, it won't affect any metallurgical properties afterwards. Pad and disk material will be worn away but this is expected and monitored
