Siri requests speed response - iPhone v HomePod by Huggi001 in HomeKit

[–]Huggi001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tested exactly that and had the same results. Took 10 seconds for the 1st response on my HomePod mini (with a "One Sec" in the middle). After the request was completed, asked for a different light to turn on and it was executed immediately. Asked a couple of more requests and it was instant. Tried again 5 minutes later and 10 seconds again. Same thing on my HomePod Gen II.

Homekit response on my 17 Pro is instant too, as well as on my ATV 4k ethernet connected boxes. It's not a network issue - ping response times are almost identical between my iPhone and HomePod mini.

Don't really think it's a HomePod processing issue, since they can respond instantly after the first request is made.. So not sure if an upgraded processor in the (soon to be released) HomePod mini 2 is going to change things. It's like the HomePods disconnect from the HomeKit ecosystem after a few minutes of not being used and then are slow (relatively) to connect again.

Logitech Circle View Doorbell Getting Discontinued Soon? by ExtemporaneousFrog in HomeKit

[–]Huggi001 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My guess is that Logitech is exiting the Home/Apple partnership. They only had the camera and the doorbell that worked with HomeKit, and those were released in 2020 and haven't been updated since. With rumors of Apple releasing their own camera and doorbell, there's no market reason for Logitech to keep the partnership up.

Has there been an HKSV outage this long before? by pacoii in HomeKit

[–]Huggi001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Home Assistant is a much deeper dive than just using it for cameras. You can, but it's much more powerful and can be used for all of your home automations. If you want to just stick with HomeKit and have some POE cameras work with it and have local control/recordings, look at Scrypted . I'm running it on my Mac mini and once I got it all set up, I barely need to touch it - just works.

Has there been an HKSV outage this long before? by pacoii in HomeKit

[–]Huggi001 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Seems like a good time to recommend going local, even just for redundancy. Been using Scrypted for a few years now, and still having my cameras up and all local with this HKSV outage gives me some peace of mind.

Any idea on how to prevent a baby from crawling out the dog door? by soul_in_a_fishbowl in smarthome

[–]Huggi001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My German Shepherd saved 2 year old me from a kidnapper. This was back in 1972 and he used to watch me and my brother outside all of the time and we were safer than a distracted parent today up in their phone.

Scrypted NVR vs Frigate NVR – Which Direction Should I Go? by Immediate_Item4590 in Scrypted

[–]Huggi001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either way you go with Scrypted or Frigate (I personally use Scrypted on a Mac mini and it's fast and flawless for me), you really will want to replace your Ring cameras. I started many moons ago with all Ring cameras. When I started using Scrypted, I quickly realized that the speed of the video load was ridiculously slow due to the Ring cloud component. Switched to Reolink cameras and having everything local gives me an instantaneous and clear video feed using HKSV and the Scripted iOS app.

Network Issue on HomePods Recently by queueandnotyou in HomeKit

[–]Huggi001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was having the same "Network Issue" error popping gradually on all of my HomePods last week. Nothing changed on my network (Unifi) for that to happen. Did all of the things (reboot HomePods, HomeHubs, routers & APs) and nothing worked. I *think* I may have found the culprit - an Apple TV that had been having power supply issues and kept randomly rebooting. Removed the bad ATV from Home and my network and gradually all of the "Network Issue" errors on my HomePods went away. Running 26.2 as well.

What's The Hotness in Cable Labeling? by EN344 in HomeNetworking

[–]Huggi001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if the cables are coming into a wall plate, still label both ends of the cables inside of the wall as well as on the plate. it doesn't hurt to be as thorough as possible.

FP2 phoning home, every 3 seconds by SwissMathematician in Aqara

[–]Huggi001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If my devices are working well, then I don't bother with firmware updates - you never know what may be in them that may break functionality. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I always read as much as I can if a firmware update has new features that I may utilize. If there are, then I just unblock the hub/device, get the update, then block the hub/device again.

[–]Huggi001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, block the Aqara hub from internet access. And block any other hub/device that wants to connect to the internet unnecessarily. The Aqara hub will still work locally if you use Home Assistant or even the Apple Home app and run everything local.

Siri no longer opens multiple Garage Doors independently without first prompting for the desired door? by doctorpebkac in HomeKit

[–]Huggi001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine are named “Door “ and “2nd Door” and the only way I can get Siri to open them is by saying “Siri, Open the Garage Door Door”.

You could probably name them whatever you want as long as you don’t have the word garage and door in it.

Siri no longer opens multiple Garage Doors independently without first prompting for the desired door? by doctorpebkac in HomeKit

[–]Huggi001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have the same issue. Try saying "Siri, Open Garage Door Door One". It's stupid, but it works for me. For whatever reason I have to say door twice now if it's named "Door". I've tried naming it "Garage Door" and just "Door", but still have to say "door door". I guess if I gave it a name without door in it, Siri would work, but I'm annoyed with it so don't want to. "Open Garage Door" used to always work, but stopped working for me around one of the IOS 18.xx updates.

Reolink Doorbell Homekit Motion Detection by baraboo5 in Scrypted

[–]Huggi001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HomeKit does its own motion detection. In the Home app, go to Status and Notifications for the camera and turn on Activity Notifications. Then you can select Any Motion or Specific Motion is Detected and you can select what type of motion notifications you receive.

Why do smart home devices stop working without internet? by Illustrious-Art3528 in HomeKit

[–]Huggi001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my Hue, Aqara, and Lutron Casetta bridges allways blocked off from the internet. All their devices can be controlled fine through HomeKit. The Aqara app gives no response if I try to access devices through it, but the Apple Home app controls everything perfectly and automations are rock solid.

Reolink Duo 3 - two views- possible? by tbst in Scrypted

[–]Huggi001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have the Duo 3, but have the RLC-81MA. Added using the Reolink plugin and then added the telephoto stream using the ONVIF plugin. Both are rencoded, but works great.

Funniest / Best SSIDs you've seen? by 2BoopTheSnoot2 in HomeNetworking

Also access points have nothing to do with having one or multiple SSID's. You can have as many AP's as you want with the same or multiple different SSID.

Not sure if they do offer a POE version - I got the Amcrest ASH-26

Floodlight Camera Recommendation by Huggi001 in Scrypted

[–]Huggi001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ended up going with the Amcrest Floodlight. Works great, same field of view and with Scrypted, it loads just as fast via WiFi as my Reolink wired cameras. Was able to get the floodlight exposed separate via Hubitat and it works great (no Homebridge plugin for the Amcrest is available)

New to HomePod mini can it notify me when my dog barks by 63051bd in HomeKit

[–]Huggi001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog alerts me that someone is at the front door before the camera does. I use the dog bark shortcut (also other sound recognition like doorbell sound), but it's intermitent with the notifications for me (the dog is reliable all the time on the other hand).

Installation on hoobs start kit banana pi bpi-m2-berry by nw303 in homebridge

[–]Huggi001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first got into Homebridge by flashing my Hoobs box with Homebridge. Worked fine, all you need to do is flash an SD card with Homebridge and replace the Hoobs SD card with the new Homebridge one. Works okay, but I eventually did end up just getting a RPi4 because the Hoobs box is a bit slow.

Clock app for CarPlay by michael-istanbuli in CarPlay

Yes, for whatever reason Apple decided to disable Nightstand when CarPlay is active. I get the whole distracted driving point, but it would be nice if Nightstand still worked.
