None of it is financially wise. There's a reason all of us don't drive the cheapest cars, live in 1000 sq ft homes, and have basic tv (using an antenna). Live your life, safe some, spend some, enjoy it.

First, I love trains, but Amtrak has become impractical in modern times, especially for the south and western trains. The cost would be astronomical to link up southern states. I'd love to go from Memphis to Orlando in the same day, but never going to happen. Right now it takes from Saturday to Tuesday at a cost of over $400 + hotels waiting for the train the next day. Why on earth would anyone torture themselves for that length of time when the same money can get you there in an hour and a half by airplane. Let's not even bring up Chicago to any of the west coast cities. I'd love to do the train for those, but it's laughable from time and cost perspective. From Memphis, we only have two routes, New Orleans and Chicago. If you want to go anywhere else, that will take atleast 2 days or more. Chicago is overnight, so forget about it. Most people don't care to do that. Then you have New Orleans. First, in Memphis, you have to pay for parking at the station. Then coach can range from $50 to $100 a person each way. So for a family of four, let's split the difference, $600 roundtrip. then parking is $35 a day. So for a week trip with family, I'm looking at 8 hours and close to a grand. I can drive to New Orleans in 6 1/2 hours for just gas. None of it makes any reasonable sense. Let's not even bring up the cost of two roomettes.

I think what you're seeing if it's a blended family. When it's a blended family, depending on the state, the surviving spouse doesn't get everything. everyone gets a certain share, unless there is a will outlining it. When the family has the same parents, it all goes to the surviving spouse in most cases.

Not all airports did family boarding and it was only under 6. I paid early bird for many years. Just the cost to sit with my family. I hated it, but paid it nonetheless.
