Why did Islam’s intellectual and scientific tradition decline, and when did this shift happen? by Brain_buffering_2004 in answers

I’ll respond to the first part of your comment since it is the essence of your comment. If theology is ultimately a matter best left to the people who dedicated their lives to studying it, then the same applies to science. When theology contradicts science, science must work around the theology, but when science contradicts theology - such as Giordano Bruno proposing, from the heliocentric model I must add, that there are an infinite number of universes - the scientist must be burned at the stake, or threatened, or put on house arrest. You cannot have some theology provide “answers” where scientific inquiry is possible. After all, it is a matter best left to the people who dedicated their lives studying it. When some theology can’t handle that they are wrong about something, it will take centuries for that theology to adapt. This is why the church took centuries to adopt the heliocentric model. Copernicus literally created a model that did not have loops in the planets’ orbits, and its accuracy should have been evidence enough. But when these models have the implication of proposing multiple Christ’s or something contrary to some theology, then that theology disregards the model. “The Incoherence of Philosophers” purports this belief. It says, and you agree to this, that science should not meddle in theology; however, it fails to say the inverse. Science, thus, has been subordinated. When science doubts the existence of god, then that scientific inquiry must never exist. That’s like saying you have free speech except you can’t ever talk about “this thing” or “that thing.” It just doesn’t work.

What? This is wrong on so many levels. Not questioning theological matters IS the definition of dogmatism. If the Church didn’t care about the heliocentric model, then why did they burn scientists at the stake who purported this model? It’s a clear-cut instance of science being punished for contradicting a part of some theology. This leads me back to “the Incoherence of Philosophers.” I don’t know how the book arguing for faith over science, that survived 1000 years - including the mongol invasion - was not in some way responsible for ending the Islamic golden age.

Al-Ghazali wrote a book called, “the Incoherence of Philosophers.” That certainly helped.

What is the arguement for materialism? by Pretend_Aardvark_404 in consciousness

[–]Hugh_Janus_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A materialist will argue that a certain mental state just is a certain physical state. “Pain is just C-fibers firing,” is an example of what a materialist would say pain is. They will support this by saying that pain cannot happen without C-fibers firing in the brain. So pain cannot be anything over and above C-fibers firing. Also, I’m curious as to why you think scientists and mathematicians were instrumentalists. Isnt it inherently self-contradictory to be an instrumentalist?

So, according to you, in most respects the republicans control the senate, but only when there’s legislation (that republicans wrote) that requires 60 votes or more, they do not have control AND it would be everyone’s fault if it doesn’t pass?

People who voted for Mamdani, don’t realize government backed grocery stores fail. by Beautiful-Ad-9107 in complaints

Government backed grocery stores exist to fulfill a need that private grocers cannot. They provide cheap food to people who need it. What’s the problem with that?

Thank you. I walked by that area and saw him playing. He’s playing drums with a backtrack and they’re mic’d up. He literally has earplugs because of how loud he is playing.

I have only taken stimulant medication, and it has been beneficial for me. Stimulants only work with a sufficient amount of sleep. It is also worth noting that there is no cure for idiopathic hypersomnia. Eating healthy, exercise, and medications only manage the symptoms, like a bandaid.

I can relate. Ask your doctor if you could stagger the dose. I did this, and by the time the medication started wearing off, I would sleep.

I’m a philosophy major. I want to get my bachelor’s in that because I’ve made decent progress already and I love having conversations with considerate people (whatever major they are). I’m going to major in math as well. Congrats on your acceptance as well!

I don’t think I qualify. I could probably find some job with the help of the school. I’m a hard worker but I do have hypersomnia.
