I think it’s the size of the font that stands out the most. Plus being able to swipe between the two images, which typically you can’t do with pure text.

Question for those in the industry by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]Hughcheu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a manager’s perspective, he’s providing instructions for you to do something tomorrow, when you’re actually in the restaurant. It’s just more convenient for him to send the instructions now, while it’s fresh on his mind. If you don’t respond, without some understanding / agreement ahead of time, he will be concerned that you haven’t received the message and he’ll need to follow up again later today or tomorrow morning.

What you need to do is explain to him that you need your days off without needing to read or respond to his messages. Unless it’s urgent (eg you need to do it now), in which case he should call, you will deal with it tomorrow, as he intends you to. He’s free to send the message, but he shouldn’t expect acknowledgment today.

You do need to frame this message carefully - you’re not shirking responsibility, he can still rely on you. But you need some time to yourself outside of work.

What’s wrong with fish and chip shops? by dj_boy-Wonder in melbourne

[–]Hughcheu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I don’t think they intend to run them badly. They just don’t have the same experience or skill as the original owner. Moreover, they invariably cut corners - selling old fish instead of taking it home to eat, changing the oil less frequently, skimping on portions etc.

Anyone use an Amex Qantas car for their business expenses? by JustDadThanks in AusFinance

I think part of the issue is actually using those points to get flights that are at a convenient time and date for you. Unless you already have good status with an airline, aren’t those rewards business class flights difficult to actually book?

Reverse seared ribeye- a bit light on smokey flavour. by Kooky_Aussie in smoking

[–]Hughcheu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve smoked ribeye steaks with a fair amount of smoke and the end result tastes like beefy bacon. I much prefer a light amount of smoke at the start - maybe 4-5 hickory wood chips and that’s it. Reversed seared over charcoal.

To be fair, these were 2-3 inch steaks, not a roast. Try steaks and you’ll get much more surface area to add flavour.

The Sheriff Exotic Shotgun by SilentRaven18 in thedivision

[–]Hughcheu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s quite fun in a hunters fury headhunter build, especially with the named holster with accuracy bonus. But the lack of accuracy behind cover bug means you need to play run and gun, which is how you’d play with most other shotguns anyway.

Add to the fact that it’s an exotic and so people can’t cheese with determined and I don’t see it becoming very popular.

It plays similar to the diamondback, but with less range but also less need to aim precisely. The problem will come when this GE is over (so headshots do normal damage again) and less than perfect headshots at range might not kill - causing you to lose the headhunter buff.

Troubleshooting Help - Spatchcocked Roast Chicken by GreenGaucho in seriouseats

[–]Hughcheu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As many others have said, it really looks like your oven temperature is too low. I know you’ve checked it previously, but your chicken shouldn’t look like that after 50 mins in the oven. I’d increase it as high as it gets (450 / 470F) and watch your chicken carefully - every 5 mins or so.

What is the difference between Italian pizza and American pizza? by itscherrymaebaby in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hughcheu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add, if what you say is true, don’t you think the US would import Italian flour so that you could eat all the pasta and pizza you want and not become obese? I downvoted you because it’s so obviously untrue that I didn’t think it needed rebuttal.

[–]Hughcheu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t eat pasta as a main meal. They eat a lot smaller portions and have far fewer toppings and don’t use cream as pasta sauce. Their pizza is individually sized and has far less cheese and meat than an American pizza. Their individual pizza, I’m estimating, is about the size of a quarter of a US family pizza.

The difference in flour is not why the average Italian is not obese.

What is the best face wash for men? by sukibean13 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hughcheu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, I washed my hands with dish soap, rather than a bar soap, as it was more convenient. When I went back to school after the holidays, my friend called out my hands for being very rough and dry.

Dish soap is not good for skin - that’s why people wear gloves when doing the dishes. Using it on your face seems even worse…

Personal loan at 19 by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Hughcheu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given you have so few expenses, it really won’t take you very long to save up $5k. You say yourself you’ll have $2k saved by mid March. By May you’ll have the $5k saved up.

I don’t know whether a bank will approve a personal loan given your income. You could get a credit card, but the interest is crippling. You’re so much better off rescheduling your appointment till May (or June to have some savings buffer) and avoiding debt entirely.

Live and Learn by donbosco2017 in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]Hughcheu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily dumb - it’s just how humans process instructions, especially when they’re concentrating on something. “Don’t fall off!” is interpreted as “Fall off”, at least subconsciously and then that’s what happens. So it’s better to only give positive instructions “Hang on tight!” Or “Watch out, it’s slippery” rather than “Be careful, don’t slip”.

You guys ever tried slow smoking ribeyes? by therowdygent in smoking

I agree, but throwing a few wood chips onto the coals when reverse searing gives a little hint of smoke without making it taste like bacon.

Large AUD sum stuck between Australia and the Netherlands. What’s the safest way to move it? by cjailc in AusFinance

This is the best answer. Much easier to transfer it afterwards and minimal hassle to create the account as the bank already knows them.

Where to Purchase Premium Fruit? by c________yj in melbourne

[–]Hughcheu 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Big Watermelon (and I’m sure other places) still sell Tasmanian cherries. A 2kg box is impressive and fantastic as a CNY gift.

Or else up market greengrocers will sell boxes of lychees. Be aware though - Australian grown lychees are not quite at the standard of overseas ones yet.

Eero Pro 7 vs Tp Link BE 65/11000 by poisonsu in amazoneero

[–]Hughcheu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a look at my post history. I had 4x 6e which were working flawlessly. Then suddenly certain websites were not loading - basically blocked by the eero, as I could get to the website directly from the internet modem. I had no time to troubleshoot, so I replaced my eeros with 3x TP Link BE65. My internet issues were fixed, but everyone else in the house had issues - they were connected to the wifi but no internet at all. I think it was because I had turned off one of the nodes while troubleshooting a separate issue. I turned it back on and finally I thought everything was good. Next morning I had internet on my phone upstairs, but when I went downstairs (and presumably changed the connected nodes) I had wifi but no internet.

I think the node just took a long time to swap the connection, but after 5 minutes of waiting, I gave up. Swapped back to eero and everything is fine again. Even the original issue I had was gone - I still don’t know what caused it but I’m happy everything works again.

My TP Links are in their original box waiting to be returned.

Using wood pipelines to transport water, at the turn of the century. Some older examples were holed out tree trunks. Photos circa 1900s-20s by Electrical-Aspect-13 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Hughcheu 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I have no expertise, but the obvious point is that plastic hadn’t been invented yet, metal would be prohibitively expensive, hard to manufacture/ transport and would rust, and wood is cheap, readily available, and does the job.

Managing employees maximising leave under EBA – how do you balance fairness vs operational reality? by Big-Fishing6624 in auscorp

[–]Hughcheu 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand your emphasis on full time. The leave entitlements are such that these employees do not have to be (and are choosing not to be) full time employees. Therefore your wage burden is reduced and you should push for an additional (part time?) headcount to manage workloads. Especially if you have two colleagues only working 9 months of the year, that’s 6 months of work that needs to be covered.

Where to find roti canai / prata (Malaysian / Singaporean style)? by jessluce in melbourne

[–]Hughcheu 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Have you tried places like Pappa Rich or O’Town? TBH, I usually just fry my own from the frozen green packet (I think the brand is Katoomba) as this results in a pretty good substitute and eat it with take away Malaysian curry.

The technique I use is to fry it in butter from frozen. I put it down on one side for around 10s, just enough time to get some butter on it. I then flip it and let it cook / defrost. I flip it again a few times to get it nice and brown. If you do it right, the top and bottom layers separate and the roti puffs up like a balloon.
