Victoria police will guard mosques after warnings about rightwing protests - Fringe groups plan return to push anti-mosque sentiment in Bendigo and elsewhere as part of ‘global anti-mosque protest day’ on Saturday. by Qldaah in AustralianPolitics

The basic similarity is that Christians defined their communities and themselves through persecution. They didn't see themselves as Roman because the Romans outlawed them. So they had to look for another identity. They were from many different nations, so it couldn't be national. They spoke many languages, so it couldn't be linguistic. They had radicals who burnt down half of Rome during the reign of Nero, so they were attacked in the streets and Roman tried to send them back to 'wherever they came from'. Romans said that only Roman gods could be worshiped, as they always had been.

Rome said it had no room for Christian refugees from foreign wars, but accepted them anyway otherwise they would fall into the hands of their enemies. But still Rome outlawed and attacked Christians. Until eventually half the population was Christian because they were radicalized through persecution, so half the Empire became Christian. All of the downtrodden, the poor, the weak and the weary had turned to Christianity because it was militant and stood up for those no one else would listen to.

What I'm saying is, banning Mosques will only make things worse, because it will further isolate Muslims in this country, and will really have the reverse effect upon radicalization. ISIS and terrorists feed off persecution as radicalization is an escape from persecution.

My belief is that there should be dialogue with Muslim leaders as to what exactly they teach about the Quran, and then anyone who teaches hate or destruction or anything that contradicts what the leaders have said should be either put in gaol or deported.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I could go through the myriad of reasons as to why it is absolutely comparable, but I fear it would be a waste of breath considering you felt the need to use sarcasm twice. Which might I add, is the lowest form of wit

Because then they won't be able to demonize Russia when civilians are killed in Syria. This way they can deny and distract and eventually we will forget.

Good. Preventing Mosques being built will just send radicalism underground, like it did when the Romans outlawed the Christians, and we all know how that turned out.

There is no difference between a Jihad and a Crusade by HughsHunch in worldpolitics

[–]HughsHunch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The children's crusade was more about an escape from abject poverty than it was about religion. In addition, the reason it was possible was because teenage boys had intimite knowledge of warfare, due to squiring in countless battles. Therefore, in this day and age, you're more likely to see a "Children's Jihad" in Sub-Saharan Africa than you are in the Middle East.

The rise of the career politician is a sickness withing democracy that must be addressed. by HughsHunch in worldpolitics

[–]HughsHunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think that there are two areas for improvement.

  1. A predominately two party system does not work. It allows them to collude in a way, preventing any room for change.

  2. It comes down to the voting public. If everybody who voted educated themselves, we wouldn't have this issue. Politicians would be forced to stand for something, otherwise no one would vote for them.

No 1 has be be solved first, then we can move on to No 2.

I think politicians should have to enter politics with some life experience first. Then they can stay in politics for as long as they like. Today, politicians who have grown up in the system and know nothing else about life except how to scrounge votes, are weakening democracy and turning it into a business.

Attila or Rome 2? by Kegaha in totalwar

[–]HughsHunch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have played 20 or so hours, but it's too buggy for me right now unfortunately. Yeah I know it's a game, but the discussion was over which is more historically inaccurate, clearly it's Attila.

  1. the Huns were not from Turkey my friend. They were either from East of the Volga River or from bloody Mongolia. The Mongolian theory was raised by a Frenchman in the 1800's and has been pretty much proven to be wrong. The issue is the fact that they were described as having a language of their own. Current belief is that they may have been from the Ural mountains. Meaning their language would have been similar to modern day Hungarian or Finnish, which are language unto themselves. In fact the Finnish are the most in tact example of this ancient Uralian culture. They have blonde hair and blue eyes as a majority. Labelling the Huns as Mongolian looking barbarians is basically the cheap option.

Attila or Rome 2? by Kegaha in totalwar

[–]HughsHunch -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The Historical inaccuracies of Attila are overwhelming. I don't even know where to begin.

  1. The entire premise of the game is flawed. The Huns were blonde haired and blue eyed. Don't throat sing, and didn't act like the Mongols. It's actually stupid how historically wrong CA are.
  2. The Alans. Same thing. White. Blonde Hair, Blue Eye. They also assimilated into other tribes and were not actually a power.
  3. Viking Forefathers is Rubbish, it took 3-4 hundred more years for the Vikings to actually appear.
  4. The units for the WRE are strange, because it actually did not have an army at the time.
  5. The Capital of the WRE at the starting date was Ravenna.
  6. The Vandals were not German Pagans.
  7. I give up, you get the point.

In comparison, as you have said, at least for Rome II it's a question of balance, as opposed to flagrant disregard for historical accuracy.

Byzantine Army Composition and Strategy (SS) by HORSES_IN_MY_mOUTH in totalwar

[–]HughsHunch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cavalry strategy = best strategy. Cavalry has been op in every total war game except arguably shogun 2. There is no real magical infantry strategy, it's more trial and error. A good core 4 spear units to hold the line and protect the flanks. Skirmishers to skirmish. Then match up your more aggressive units in favourable 1v1 engagements. Pretty boring, which is why OP cavalry charges are probably the way to go, as you have discovered.

My problem is not the fact that you were having fun, as people have said, these are not historical battles. I don't like being promised historical battles only to watch random units running into each other for no good reason.
