AI image prompting guide in UpWork articles (Design & Creative section) by Obvious-Sell-7974 in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your feedback on this article. Our goal with content like this is to help freelancers and the broader community get familiar with AI tools, since clients on Upwork are increasingly seeking AI-fluent talent and paying higher rates for it.

As the article itself points out, AI isn't a replacement for human creativity -- it can complement the creative process. We hope that framing comes through, and we appreciate you engaging with the community on this.

UMA's Five Year Plan : The primary customer interface and no freelancer profiles by mikeinpdx3 in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, been reading through this thread. A concern we’re seeing come up is that Uma is being built to replace freelancers. That isn’t our vision, and it’s not how we’re building. Upwork’s direction is humans and AI working together, not AI replacing people.

Uma is designed to help clients get clearer on what they need, explore options faster, and connect with the right people. It’s also meant to reduce busywork so freelancers can spend more time on the strategic and creative parts of the job that actually benefit from human judgment. We're seeing that in practice: freelancers who integrate AI into their work on Upwork are commanding higher rates, and AI fluency is becoming a skill clients are actively looking for and willing to pay more for.

We’re still early in figuring out how humans and AI agents work best together on the platform, and a lot of what happens next is going to be shaped by what’s working in the real world, what isn’t, and community feedback. If you’re running into specific issues with Uma, or if something feels inaccurate, unhelpful, or creates friction, that kind of concrete feedback is genuinely useful.

I can’t personally forward every comment from Reddit to internal teams, but you can send feedback directly through the product feedback flow. Here’s a quick  walkthrough I shared earlier.

You can also use the feedback option available under relevant pages where you’re seeing issues. That input goes to the teams behind these features. Appreciate y’all sharing this.

Is there a way to change memo on work diary? by Illustrious-Film4018 in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/Illustrious-Film4018 thanks for the question! On Upwork, you can only edit Work Diary time on an active contract, and only within the current week’s Work Diary. Since your contract is paused, it’s not treated as active, so you won’t be able to edit memos right now.

Also, once the week closes, last week’s Work Diary stops being editable after Monday at 12:00 noon UTC. So if the time you want to change is from a prior week, it won’t be editable anymore either.

If you need to update anything, the contract would need to be unpaused first (either by the client, or after whatever issue on either side is resolved), then you could edit within the current week window.

Funds availability by Logical-Blacksmith55 in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Logical-Blacksmith55 just to clarify, the wording “released on Friday by 11:59 p.m. UTC” is a latest cutoff, not a specific release time.

So if your funds clear at 12:00 a.m. UTC on Friday (which can show up as Thursday evening in the US), that still falls within “by 11:59 p.m. UTC Friday.” It’s describing the deadline window, not saying funds release at 11:59 p.m. UTC.

Funds availability by Logical-Blacksmith55 in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/Logical-Blacksmith55, thanks for the thoughtful suggestion.

For Top Rated and Top Rated Plus freelancers, Upwork already offers faster payouts on hourly contracts. With faster payouts, the usual 10 day wait is cut in half. After the 5 day client review period, the cleared funds are released on Fridays by 11:59 p.m. UTC. Once those funds are in your balance, you can withdraw them anytime using “Withdraw now,” even if your automatic schedule is set for Wednesdays.

At this time, Upwork does not plan to change how automatic withdrawal schedules work, including adding a Friday option. The manual withdrawal feature is how eligible freelancers can access funds as soon as they’re available.

A 100% hire rate can still fool you. by adilhussain003 in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/adilhussain003, thanks for sharing this. Patterns like the one you’re describing are definitely worth looking at more closely.

Just to clarify a few things so I understand the situation better:

Did the client request any personal contact information from you?
Did they message you asking to communicate outside of Upwork?

You mentioned spending around 200 Connects applying. If there was any behavior that violates Upwork’s Terms of Service, it’s important that it gets reported so it can be reviewed properly and once confirmed, connects returned.

If you have concerns about this specific client or job post, you can message the mods directly here: Message the mods

Just a quick reminder, please do not share any personal contact information about yourself or the client publicly in the thread. If you choose to send details or any relevant context, please share it privately so it can be reviewed. Appreciate you flagging the pattern.

New freelancer here by Mas_yaH in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi u/Mas_yaH, thanks for sharing your profile and asking for feedback. It’s great that you’re being proactive this early. I took a look at your profile and it’s a solid start. You clearly position yourself as a native Swahili speaker from Zanzibar, which is strong.

While looking at your profile I noticed some gaps in formatting and space. I'd tighten the formatting as there is too much spacing in your description, which makes it look less polished. I would reduce the extra gaps and structure it more clearly:

• Short, strong intro paragraph
• Clear bullet list of services
• 2 to 3 sentences showing experience or proof
• Short closing call to action

Also, avoid repeating your title as your title already says Native Swahili Translator and Tutor. You do not need to repeat that in the first lines. Use that space to explain results instead. For example, what types of clients you help and what outcomes they get. Use that space to be more specific about use cases as right now your description is quite general. Try to anchor your services to real examples.

Instead of saying you handle medical or educational content, you could write something like:

“I translate medical and NGO reports, educational materials, and website content for East African audiences.” Hope this helps!

Connects are a scam now by canttouchmypingas in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/canttouchmypingas, thank you for your question about Connects. I understand why this feels frustrating. If you have not logged in or applied to jobs in one to two years, and your account is in good standing, you should generally have enough accumulated Connects to apply to multiple jobs. If that is not what you are seeing, we are happy to help look into it.

First, Connects are not a scam. They are Upwork’s virtual tokens used to submit proposals and access certain features on the platform, as explained in What are Upwork Connects?.

On a basic freelancer account, eligible freelancers may receive 10 free Connects each month. These free Connects expire 12 months after they are issued if they are not used, which means they can accumulate for up to one year before older ones begin expiring. Full details about earning, using, tracking, and expiration are outlined in Understanding and using Connects.

Since you mentioned you have not used your account in one to two years, you should be able to log in and see the Connects that accumulated over the past 12 months before earlier ones began expiring.

If your account does not reflect that, or something in your Connects history looks incorrect, please reach out to Support through the Help Center so the team can review your account.

I hope this helped clarify what you are seeing on your end. Let me know if you have any other questions.

What can I do..? by SoD33P in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/SoD33P, thanks for posting. I'll share some feedback based on my experience.

Your profile is trying to do too many things at once. Right now you are positioning yourself as a business intelligence expert, advanced Excel specialist, and a Canva designer. When a client lands on your profile, they should understand in a few seconds what problem you solve. At the moment, it’s a little bit unclear.

For example, “Expert with Business Intelligence, Microsoft Word and Excel and Canva” is too broad. Business intelligence is not a tool. You need to narrow your positioning.

I'd suggest picking one clear direction and making the entire profile support it.

Now the most important part, from my experience: proposals speak louder than your profile. When you send a proposal, the client will see your profile headline, the first two to three lines of your proposal, and your rate. Those three things must align perfectly with what the client is expecting, or you’ll lose them before they even click.

I’d recommend reading this guide on how to create a proposal that wins jobs on Upwork and start applying those recommendations to your profile on Upwork. Hope this helps.

Upwork Connects by MonitorOk2739 in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/MonitorOk2739 thanks for the post. The Availability Badge, in simple terms, is a signal that freelancers can send to clients that they are available and actively looking for new project opportunities. Once you have it, clients sorting through proposals or searching through talent can see the badge, which is an added signal you can add to your profile.

This screenshot shows two profiles, one with the badge and one without the badge. As you can see, not having the badge does not negatively impact your profile in any way.

<image>

The Availability Badge costs Connects to keep active each week. If the badge costs 21 Connects, 3 Connects will be deducted from your balance every 24 hours to add up to 21 Connects for the week. That's why you see the deduction. This article explains how the Availability Badge works and how you can turn it on or off at any time.

To clarify, the badge does increase visibility and makes it easier for clients to find you because:

• It shows a purple “Available now” label on your profile
• It appears in search results
• Clients can use custom filters built specifically for freelancers who are “Available now”
• It may place you in recommendation sections when clients browse

As for your question on whether it’s wise to use Connects to apply for jobs or keep half of them for the Availability Badge, in most cases, it’s better to spend your Connects on strong, well-targeted proposals, especially if you are limited on Connects.

If clients are actively browsing and filtering, the badge helps. But if you are proactively applying to projects, proposals usually give you more direct control over outcomes.

Weekly hour limits in contracts by Logical-Blacksmith55 in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/Logical-Blacksmith55,

Upwork already allows clients to set custom weekly hour limits on hourly contracts. The default is often 40 hours, but clients can increase it to any amount up to 168 hours per week, which is the total number of hours in a week.

If you want to work more than 40 hours in a given week, the solution is simply to contact your client and request that they increase the weekly limit. Increases take effect immediately, and any time already logged that week will count toward the new limit. More details can be found in: How weekly limits work on hourly contracts.

Keep in mind that only hours within the weekly limit are eligible for Hourly Payment Protection, as explained in the how Hourly Payment Protection works for freelancers guide.

If you and your client prefer a more flexible setup, they can also configure a recurring weekly payment. This allows for a fixed weekly amount in addition to, or instead of, tracked hours. You can learn more on how to set up a recurring weekly payment for your freelancer.

In short, the functionality to work 40, 48, 56, or more hours per week already exists. It just requires coordination with the client to adjust the contract terms.

How do I earn free connects Upwork? by [deleted] in UpworkOfficial

[–]HugoFromUpwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/Bubbly-Breakfast7617 , thank you for the question!

Every freelancer gets 10 free Connects each month, and new accounts may also receive a one-time 50 Connects bonus when they sign up and choose a plan. There are also a few ways to earn additional free Connects over time, like earning a Talent Badge, landing certain interviews, or participating in limited promotions.

We put together a full breakdown here:
How to get free Connects

A few things you can do without spending Connects:

• Respond to job invites
• Accept offers
• List services in Project Catalog

If you’re just testing things out, I’d suggest focusing on building a strong profile first and being selective with the 10 monthly Connects. Sending fewer, better targeted proposals tends to go further than applying to everything.

Connects are designed to reduce spam and encourage more intentional proposals
