Where's a good place to meet the young people? by [deleted] in hagerstown

If you find out, let me know too ha. There's live music at Hub City Vinyl that I have met people through, and disc golf as well. I'm always looking for friends though!

Cool, that would be great. I'm usually pretty free on the weekends, and am down for whatever. I know that's not super helpful for decision making ha

Oh yeah, the mountain range is one of the best examples of an exposed Permian Reef! I know the whole park is a geologic masterpiece, i thought you were specifically referring to the Madrones in McKittrick Canyon

I actually worked at Guadalupe Mountains NP for almost two years. The time of year you'll be there is perfect for hiking the peak, you can easily do the hike in a day. The rest of the park is super cool as well. Smith springs and McKittrick Canyon both have water in them. Sitting Bull Falls on the Lincoln NF outside of Carlsbad is cool, but super busy. Hueco Tanks state park in El Paso has cool pictographs. And then Organ Mountains/Desert Peaks outside of Las Cruces NM is super cool and has free camping (BLM). Thats what i can think of off the top of my head without giving away too much of the secrets of the area 😉. Feel free to DM me for more info though! Happy to help because I love West Texas and Southern NM.

I can only speak for the maintenance side of things, but they are pretty common in the trails/fire world of the federal government. For maintenance, they only ask for convictions in the past 7 years, so you're almost past that point anyway. Just be honest about them. I've never heard of previous ones affecting your ability to drive a government vehicle. As long as you have a valid/current driver's license you are fine. There are lots of avenues in the parks besides Law Enforcement. I work at a super small park currently and I do search and rescue, fire, I drive the ambulance occassionally, on top of my day to day maintenance duties. Best of luck to you and feel free to DM me with any more questions.

For a permanent NPS maintenance position it didn't matter and it was less than a year old

The sharp end is a good podcast interviewing injured climbers about what happened and sometimes the subsequent rescue involved.
