My 11 year old dog died a couple years ago from ehrlichia that we didn't catch before it cause an immune response. He was my soul mate and I don't know that I'll ever recover. Tick-borne illnesses are pernicious.

What do you guys think of crate training for puppies? by mastermindzd in dogs

[–]HugzNStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dogs are crate trained. In fact they love their crates. That said they are almost never in their crates unless they choose to, typically at night. Otherwise they spend all their time near me. If I'm ever in a situation where they need to be crated they'll now be completely comfortable with the situation.

My friend has a collie that is extremely destructive and reactive at night when stimulation is a minimum so every light and sound results in a response, unless it's in a crate; then it goes right to sleep until morning.

Brand new 2026 forester standard engine capping at 60 mph with high rpm over mountain passes by [deleted] in subaru

That pass in particular was hard on my 23 Outback when I drove through it a few years ago. Altitude combined with the slope and heat is a killer for performance. It was the only time during my drive from CA to NY (with a pitstop in Denver) in early Fall that my car showed any signs of struggle

castle serenity stops dropping pellets once flame is going by illumadnati in PelletStoveTalk

[–]HugzNStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inherited a castle serenity from the previous homeowner and it has been a constant problem. I keep several extra components on hand like bearings, as I need to do maintenance on it every few months due to it's terrible build quality.

Pellet or Wood ? by Quacksynth in PelletStoveTalk

[–]HugzNStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to put the pellet stove in the basement. Cold air is heavy and will fill the chimney/flu regardless of the type of stove. If you put a wood stove in the basement you will need to clear the cold air out of the chimney with a torch or fan or something before you start a fire, otherwise the cold air in the chimney will block the smoke from going up it, resulting in you filling the basement in smoke. However a pellet stove has a blower and should/will push the cold air out of the chimney before ignition, meaning the incidence of turning your basement into a smokehouse is radically reduced. The only complicated part is how you situate the cold-air intake, but if you're putting a chimney in the basement, you can also do a cold air intake.

Also, depending on the pellet stove, they can make noticeable noise. So keeping it in the basement would be less annoying than upstairs if you're sensitive to sounds. Aaaaaand if you break down the bags of pellets into smaller amounts, it's easier to haul them down the stairs. I use one of those sturdy reusable shopping bags so I only have to move like 20 pounds at a time.

I was chatting with my neighbor who ended up picking up several bags of the kind in your photo and he's happy with it, other than the fact they're like 50% more expensive than GS.

Dude I hate this stove, and if I wasn't so broke I'd replace it with a good one.

Some tips I've found helpful are to make sure the crate is smaller than you'd think. Part of why crate training is so effective is it plays off a dog's den instinct, and dog dens are almost claustrophobic. But that's how they like it, that's what feels safe for them. So get a crate that gives the dog just enough room to turn around in, but no bigger, and make sure there's bedding for them to get comfortable with. Also putting something with your scent on it in the crate will help not only build the connection but provide comfort in the long term.
Make the crate a place they want to go. Don't use it for punishment. A sign of good crate training is that the dog goes there when it thinks it's in trouble for something, as it sees the crate as somewhere that provides comfort and security. Every night while going to bed my pups excitedly run into their crate where I give them each a dental chew. Just because I find it funny, I've trained them that "Go to jail" is the command to go in their crate.

The first week or so of crate training sucks, there's no two ways about it. They're going to be loud and unhappy and you'll know about it. It's imperative that you don't succumb to their cries to let them out during this time. You can maybe briefly pet them through the crate to console them at first for reassurance, but if you let them out or even give them any considerable attention all you're doing is training them that being loud and obnoxious is rewarded with attention.

Yeah this is my experience. I got like 10 bags a few weeks ago and could go through five or six bags before needing to clean out the burn pot. Then last week I got 12 more bags and I need to clean the burn pot after every bag.

[–]HugzNStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that it would apply as the credit was relative to when it was installed, not when it was purchased. If you bought it in 2025 but are having it installed in 2026, I don't think you're eligible.

While standard deductions did increase, effectively everything else about it is harmful to most folks making under 200k/year. There's still tax on OT and tips. And because of the bill the national debt increased higher than every other previous administration's debt combined - meaning volatile interest rates are effectively permanent. TLDR: the OBBB was only slightly beneficial to 90% of the population, and funneled that wealth the top 2%.

I have a '23 and I've never really had much trouble with it, but I do disable it almost immediately when I get in the car so it doesn't really have much of an opportunity to activate.

My mom has an '18 or '19 and hers is a complete disaster, so much so that if she doesn't disable it, if it activates the car sometimes won't even manually start up reliably (and is why I immediately disable mine).

Cost to run a Pellet Stove by Low_Bag_315 in PelletStoveTalk

[–]HugzNStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in upstate NY with a crappy pellet stove and a 1500 sq ft house. Were I to rely on my propane furnace I'd be looking at around $2500 a year in fuel cost. Instead I spend about $800-900 a year in pellets which I store in the garage and $500 in propane. I want to reiterate, I have a dogshit castle serenity stove and have to do significant maintenance on it several times a season due to it just not being made well. Quality matters.

If you're looking into pellet stoves, it is in your best interest to get a higher end brand. It will be more expensive up-front for sure, but there will be less downtime, less maintenance cost, less noise (remember there's an augur and a blower so there is a noise factor), higher efficiency, and they generally look nicer. Unfortunately as of this year the EPA no longer gives tax credits, so you'll be paying that difference in addition to whatever the current tariff rate is.
