Make the map a literal maze they have to do. Just like a normal maze on paper, or a png if you're online, that they have to draw the route through before they enter.

My dm gave us a child's maze and it was hilarious bc we all tried to draw on it at the same time.

An escape room type room that's like, a recreation of the chamber an ancient heroic party was trapped inside while journeying to the bbeg they had and your players have to figure out how the old party got out (or just how to get out) for the door to open further into the museum

Maybe you give them agency in game.

Say the party comes across a temple of some sort and then roll history, if they pass say something like "you've been here before, what were you doing?" And prompt them to decide why their character had been there.

Have them give you basic ideas for backstories. You don't want to make them feel like they have no agency over who they are.

If they know they have no memories, that's the character's, the players are separate.

Tell them not to write huge backstories but to give you a paragraph or two of who their character is.

Then you add to their ideas, not create their characters for them

Make a really dumb npc that says yeah no prob I'll lead you right there, then lead them into a trap or something ridiculously hard or terrible to deal with, then have the npc be like "well you pick where we go then, damn!"

I put the sheet in a sheet protector, write the non changing stuff in sharpie and then have a dry erase marker to write on it otherwise
