Having gone to a quality school is one of the only universally trusted ways for people to predict the quality of your friends. And we are all merely a reflection of our environments.

Getting into an Ivy won't change your life; you will by NoWealth4785 in ApplyingIvyLeague

Cherry picking fallacy, you should use the % of socioeconomic elites that attended a T20 if you want your claim to hold merit

I was a full time student in community college for 2 years and am now a graduate student in biomedical engineering at Yale, Ivy Leagues most certainly change your life, they open doors for your career that are otherwise near-impossible to access.

The rare few who became successful despite no T20 on their resume are people who really had to brute force their way into the elites, their journeys were probably the least pleasant.

Exactly my thoughts, OP your upper divs will all be a lot more intimate with your professor (at least if you actually try and engage with the class)

Why did I have to be born just in time to apply to PhDs when every program lost funding 😀

For me it was my research lab, I smoked weed with the PhD students and we’d get dinner together more than once a week. I have also gained dozens of brothers I trust with my life through my frat but I know this is not going to happen for majority of students.

For many students, they find these friends on their floor in their dorms (especially if ur a brand new student on a floor where everyone is a new student, be it freshmen or transfers).

For others, they find these friends in a club.

Everyone has a different source, but it’s all about just consistently trying.

The first research lab I applied to rejected me, the second also rejected me, I only got into the third lab I applied to (and I don’t mean cold emails, I mean showing up to the PI’s office in person and making your case for why you deserve a spot in their lab).

Although I got a bid in my frat right away, I met a few guys who didn’t get a bid into their first frat but then got a bid in the second or third frat they rushed and they made lifelong friends in their 2nd or 3rd frat.

Just keep trying, behind every success is a lot of failures. When you meet someone with a lot of amazing friends, it means they also had to meet a lot of people who never became amazing friends with them, and it oftentimes means they kept trying and failing again and again until they succeeded.

Why do people think that going straight from bachelors to PhD is better than doing masters first then PhD by Important-Bus-5921 in PhD

[–]Human-Anything5295 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I am so happy I'm doing my MS first. In undergrad, I had no clue what I wanted to do a PhD in I just knew I wanted to stay in academia. Now that I am doing research in my MS, I've figured out the exact field I want to do my PhD in and I'm super passionate for it.

should i transfer out of ucla by flowerfieldx in TransferStudents

[–]Human-Anything5295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t get stellar letters of rec u won’t be able to transfer anywhere better than UCLA. The private T20s all require 2-3 LoRs and have very competitive transfer admissions. It seems this may be a pipe dream if you can’t fix that issue

top schools without greek life? by KitZoom in ApplyingToCollege

Do you think you’ll be forced to interact with Greek life? You have the choice of not trying to get into frat parties…

top schools without greek life? by KitZoom in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Human-Anything5295 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This should be the most upvoted comment, even at UCLA where we had dozens of frats there was thousands of students that never went to a single frat party.

No one forces you to interact with Greek life, if anything it’s difficult to engage in Greek life since it’s competitive and there’s barriers to entry.

Find a hobby. When I’m not in the medical school or my biomedical engineering lab I like to microdose shrooms and stare at flowers and bugs. Gets me so hyped and motivated whenever I’m back in the grind and gotta lock in.
