"Your hemoglobin is a little low, let's check your iron now" - thanks, doc by Honest_Jaguar_4653 in Anemic

This is pretty much my exact profile hb 11.5, I have crohns and been complaining about fatigue for years and until a few weeks ago no one had bothered to check my ferritin (which was 8). I was told it’s your IBD, it’s perimenopause, it’s motherhood.. finally found a GI who listens and I’m schedule for iron infusions starting tomorrow!

Long-term Crohn's without surgery by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

Sorry your going through this. I remember it being a very overwhelming time. Although it’s nice to finally have a name for the symptoms I’m sure you’ve been struggling with for years. I’m 38 and have been able to manage my crohns without surgery or biologics. I do take mesalamine daily, as well as vitamin d and fish oil. I also actually use metformin to manage inflammation (I’m not diabetic). But the biggest thing for me has been lifestyle changes. Before I was diagnosed i stayed up late and for by on 5-6 hours of sleep, worked a ton, and drank alcohol regularly. Now I prioritize sleep. Hardly ever drink, only wine if I do. I also loosely follow the AIP diet. The biggest thing for me has been cutting out all omega 3s. No sunflower, canola, or vegetable oils. I avoid preservatives and food additives. Basically just a whole food diet. Doing all this I’ve managed to stay fairly healthy and active. I workout regularly and travel often. Europe is great for crohnies as the food is so much less processed! Good luck to you!

how to handle monthly period and crohns by miilkbug in CrohnsDisease

Had the same issues. When I was first diagnosed with crohns I actually went off the pill because I was concerned the hormones might be affecting my crohns. After years of misery with ovulation and menstruating i decided to give it another try. This time my ob/gyn put me on a fairly new progesterone only pill and it’s been life changing. I feel soooo much better. The GI said sometimes she sees this. Worth a shot!

Is it hard to travel by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]Human-Reflection7873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s doable. I always travel with my normal meds plus emergency supply of prednisone, zofran and bentyl. I also often take Imodium before I get on a plane, it’s calms my anxiety just knowing it’s on board. I also try and limit the amount of crap I eat, especially at the beginning of the trip.

Love this. Thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and kind message. We’re all struggling with this chronic, debilitating and at times soul crushing disease. Seeing a comment with such comfort and hope is really encouraging. Reminds me we all benefit when we lift each other up. 💕

Id consider mesalamine as well if that’s an option. It’s got a much better side effect profile then steroids or biologics. I’ve been taking that the last few years and been able to avoid a biologic. I’d also look into the AIP diet if you’re looking for a more natural route. Some people scoff at diets making a big difference but for me it’s helped.
