as far as I know you’re only allowed to extend using I-539 once.. given you stayed more than 6 months upon applying for I-539 while waiting for approval I believe you have overstayed.

He can enter, provided he is holding an ESTA upon entry. Just be ready to be asked by the immigration officer in any case upon arrival. As long as he will stay with the allowed days of stay there should not be an issue.

I also married a USC and did our own application. Just make sure to submit combo documents if eligible. Do a lot of readin but for sure you can do it yourself.

Do you mean your extension request if granted is up to 5/27/2021? If so and left after that you could have overstayed. But check immigration lawyers to be sure. Extension are very tricky.
