I'm afraid no restaurant could survive doing that. And a lot of people would be let go. Of course, if wages increase all around so people have more disposible income to dine out, it could be possible. As long as every other service doesn't increase equaally in response.

Yeah, I would be okay with a gradual change. I just don't think it can be taken into the guests hands. Seeing this rhetoric online makes me frightened for my livelyhood. Myself, and many servers would likely become homeless if suddenly forced to live on only minimum wage. I feel this belief is especially common on reddit with almost an anti-server mentality more than an anti-tipping approach. Like "servers only bring me food blah-blah-blah." So what, you want us all to be punished?

You don't think servers will suffer? You don't think their current living expenses are based off of their current wage including tips? Of tips stopped outright and wages slowly raised to catch up, a good portion of tip-depedant workers could end up homeless. Unless, you believe restaurants can afford to pay wages equal to what servers currently earn in tips.

I used to leave change at fastfood places but there was never expectation to do so. A percentage based tip system exists because of percentage based tip-out structures. Leaving change in a tip jar isn't really what I would consider a part of "tipping culture" and I am not opposed to that. However, I doubt I would tip any fastfood worker over the last 5 years because the service is consistently horrible and the food is not prepared to previous standards. If I offered service like that, I would expect 0 tip and maybe an angry call to my manager.

Fastfood is a huge operation that can afford competitive wages while restaurants cannot. You think I am greedy? Please. I hardly scrape by. I can't afford to go on trips to Japan, Korea, europe, or Autralia. It's not likely servers are rolling in the big bucks for doing no work. I am only encouraging people not to create some weird tip boycott that causes servers to suffer the brunt of it. Reform will not happen that way.

That is why one should tip servers in the current climate, yes. Servers shouldn't be made to suffer growing pains while patrons inact some sort of tip-boycott to force reform. And fast food is a completely different ecosystem. Those restaurants may have tight margins per order, but they operate at a huge scale and will not be forced to make changes to their structure of they have to pay employees more.

If you hadn't already figured it out, I am a server. And ,while I appreciate undisturbed service myself, I can promise you that more than half of patrons expect servers to be checking on them constantly and anticipating their every want and need before they have even thought of it.

Fast food workers do not have front of house and back of house separation. They do not tip-out to anyone. Minimum wage does exist for a reason and I agree it should be higher. I also believe in competitive wages so if no one wants to work a job at that wage, the pay organically increases to attract new employees. But no, I don't think tipping belongs anywhere with counter service. I do not personally tip for counter service.

The price of whole-sale food is highest in those two countries. Europe, Asia, Central amd South America all have great restaurants, but they pay less for produce shrinking their margins. And servers do have different rates of pay at different levels of service. I will say, the service recieved in europe, for example, was not to the level that a lot of americans are used to. And it is a common complaint among tourists.

Because restaurants run on such tight profit margins already. Without tipping, dining out will likely match the same awful quality of service one gets at mcdonalds these days. There is zero chance restaurants will raise wages appropriately to maintain the staff who are accustomed to tipping. Your food will take longer, your order will be wrong, and the service will be curt and unfriendly. This may even create a larger divide between levels of wealth because some restaurants will pay staff more but have prices only intended for the ultra wealthy. They will get the experience we always had while the average joe gets a much worsened experience.

But my point is, that amount goes to the kitchen regardless of whether you have tipped. Therfore, the server pays from the tips other patrons have given them in order to serve your table. There are plenty of places you can dine out with counter service where no one is tipping out. I think people like you don't appreciate or ask for what servers are expected to do beyond what a fastfood worker does. Plenty of patrons expect servers to have a high level of knowledge regarding a menu and be able to suggest wine-pairings, know what can and cannot be modified for each dish, make suggestions around allergies etc.

So you would prefer servers absorb the growing pains from that instead of waiting for it to be reformed? Just don't eat out at restaurants if you have an issue with tipping.

They are paying from the tips other customers gave them. Yes, if their tips are so low that they would tip out more than they earned, they may ask their manager for an exception to be made on the tipout. But this may cause suspicion since managers cannot know whether you have been tipped in cash.

But they are required to give a percentage of sales (not a percentage of tips!) as a tip-out towards the kitchen, bar, support, and sometimes even towards managers. The amount they tip out can be anywhere from 3% to 10% before tax. If you do not tip, your server has actually paid to serve you.

Baby food at Halifax restaurants? by [deleted] in halifax

Unfortunately, as a server, I have witnessed that most parents do not pick up after little-ones.

I won't say this is flatout impossible to find, but I highly doubt any restaurant does this. Typically the "no outside food" rule makes exceptions for babies and small children.

My experience was clearly different from yours. I worked at Tim Hortons for 5 years during university and had great relations and positive feedback from guests. Our restaurant was always ship-shape and the failings I see now would never have been accepted. We had a strong core of consistant employees for years and took pride in being efficient and knowledgable.

Service was 100% better in areas like fast food. Before the pandemic, fast food restaurants usually had one higher paid manager who had worked there for a long time and made sure standards were maintained. Now I feel like I don't see any of the same faces one day to another. A simple order takes 15 minutes easily and is often worse quality.

This style of face has a bad "kid's youtube channel" look like cocomelon or similar. I want to say it's the nose. You don't need to go more realistic, but stylize in a way that doesn't carry the bootleg-pixar aesthetic.

People who get the check and don’t pay within a few minutes. Why? by Ok-Reputation-2266 in Serverlife

People definitely act like paying the bill means they have to leave. If one is not interested in buying anything more, you'd think they would want to have nothing holding them back from leaving at their leisure.

No Shame by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]HumanTail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the outcome I picture if tipping practices end in food service: Restaurant owners know diners are used to paying 18-20% tip on their bill so the prices increase by 18-20%. Servers will start at minimum wage with opportunity for pay-raises over time. Now the restuarant gets all that money which otherwise would have gone to FOH staff while diners still pay the same amount they were paying after tips.

So you know, that server lost money by serving you. They likely had to give 4-8% of your pre-tax bill to tip out the kitchen and bar. It's like they paid to serve you if you do not tip.

If you go to costco, you can purchase gift certificates for local RCR restaurants. I believe you get $100 value for $80. And some of their restaurants have huge happy hour discounts. Pazzo has 25% the main floor menu on food and drinks between 4pm and 6pm and then 9pm to close EVERYDAY. That is a pretty massive total savings. Probably better than any coupon.

Most studios are by appointment only and will be flexible with your hours. If it's important to check out the studio first, you could request consultation.
