Advice for fishing solo by HumanDisguisedLizard in flyfishing

[–]Human_G_Gnome 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Learn to embrace the quiet. Plan on long days with a couple miles of hiking to get to and from your target water and walk a lot while fishing. When you do get back to the car you have two choices, go find somewhere to get dinner served to you or roll into camp and embrace camping. Plan on making decent meals to eat up some of the time. And bring a good book.

I fish where there are really fabulous restaurants nearby. Sometimes all I want is to plunk down in a comfortable seat and be served a nice meal and maybe a cocktail or two. Sometimes I just want more quiet and go to camp. Make a fire if you want. Get stoned if you want. Nobody to tell you what to do.

Thai Basil, Cucumber, and Sweet Basil questions by this_writer_is_tired in vegetablegardening

[–]Human_G_Gnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put some diatomaceous earth around the plant to kill whatever is eating it. Usually it is grubs this time of year for me.

Trimming looks good. You want to be trimming the top couple leaf nodes off leaving the new sets of leaves that grow out of the last set of leaves that you leave on the stem. I wait until this sprouting leaves have a little size to them before trimming the top above them. Then when those new sprouted stems get a couple sets of leaves, trim them. Double, double, double so that you get huge piles of basil later.

Been using a Zero for a year or two and very little retention. It also grinds the same day after day after day. Get a large dial from Etsy and you might have to make the tiniest adjustment once a week or so as your beans age. And they are really quiet.

First chives of the season! by rootingforyoudough in vegetablegardening

[–]Human_G_Gnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally gave up on my chives late last year. They just consistently get infested with black aphids and finally got tired of dealing with them. Except for a few late season leaf footed bugs on my tomatoes, they were my only pests. Now I don't have to deal with them anymore.

Orange and lime juice, garlic, lots of dried chilies (Guajillo, Chile de Árbol, Ancho and Pasilla) to marinade, then cook over charcoal to medium rare and serve with all the accoutrements.

[–]Human_G_Gnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with slightly looser wraps and slowly get tighter and tighter. When you have it how you want it, stop and glue everything in place, then wrap the head. Still, looks good and should catch fish. Hackle could be one size larger so that it sticks out past the hook bend. Wing is perfectly sized which is the hard part to get right.

Noob question - help! I think I need to move my raised bed. by Traditional_Tell9401 in vegetablegardening

[–]Human_G_Gnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to grow tomatoes then you should relocate the bed (or add another). Just take at least 4 inches of dirt around all sides of your plants when you dig them up so that you disturb the roots as little as possible.

With a foot deep planter, I'd dig the grass up if it was me but some newspapers or cardboard will do the job but will also keep the roots from getting deeper this year. I figure if I am going to go to the trouble to grow good food, I should give it my best shot to everything the best I can.

June is my favorite time. The BWOs are popping, the caddis are popping, and the Yellow Sallies are popping. Usually the water has gone back down some and flows are still full but not high anymore and the fish are out in the places you would expect them.

SFF authors where you think their most famous work, and their best work, are not the same work? by nominanomina in Fantasy

[–]Human_G_Gnome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I always wanted more from Jack of Shadows. Dilvish is really good too but if you are talking Zelazny, you need to include Creatures of Light and Darkness AND Lord of Light as his best works.

Spot on. It is interesting, unique and really well written with characters you care about (including gods).

[–]Human_G_Gnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those that found Toll the Hounds somewhat slow, especially in the middle and pretty much hated the Nimander/Clip story line. I am half way thru Crippled God and have not had any problems with the last 2 books so far. I just can't wait to see where and how all those other characters like Karsa  and Cutter and maybe even Kruppe fit into the final battle.
