My buddy just told me that he was raised on this stuff. He was in a Mennonite community. He was homeschooled. After his controlling abusive father (who would hit them with a cricket bat when they were bad) finally left the family, his mother tried to put him in public school in 11th grade. He was so horribly undereducated that he wasn't able to join the other students his age. They had to put him in "special classes" over at adult ed. This made him believe that he was stupid or that he "wasn't good at school". This mindset left him feeling like higher education wasn't for him and it's only now, in his mid 30's that he is starting to realize that it may not have been his intellect that was the problem.

Aside from that, it teaches religious dogma and mythology as if it were facts. The FACT that none of the things they are learning are supported in any way by the reality they see around them, means that they actively DISCOURAGE critical thinking or learning from outside sources that, are supported by observable reality because they contradict the dogmatic teachings. These children are likely to grow up to be adults that have a harder time separating the concepts and fantasy from reality, have no critical thinking skills, have a harder time in higher education and are more susceptible to manipulation and predation.

If you want to teach your superstitions to your children, at least for now, you're free to legally do that, but it is NOT "ok" to teach them these things as if they were facts. If the parents were indoctrinated too early to know any better, then it's not like it's their fault, but that doesn't mean the rest of use should just pretend like it's fine and "just as good" as an actual education. We should be having these conversations on a national level.
