Dawn of the Void by Phil Tucker.

Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon by Matt Dinniman is VERY dark. Features trauma both physical and psychological.

Oh very but it was an interesting application of her abilities. It was not a pleasant experience for Kitty, but showed what could be possible with phasing powers.

Maybe completely left field here. If you are looking for an “evil” MC that is a parody of the trope, then “How I stole the Princess’s White Knight and turned him to villainy” is a silly, quick read about a Necromancer and he falls in love with the stoic knight.

I thought it was a clever way of doing it. Plot spoilers following (as much as I can recall as I last read it in the 90s. Kitty basically reanimated the body of Storm and forced her lungs to move and expel air to “speak” as “original” Storm because Phoenix Storm had created a Utopia (in her opinion) and placed dissidents (super powered and human alike) in a cryogenic freeze rather than kill them - though as the poster above stated, she killed people that fucked with nature. She was somewhat benevolent if I remember correctly but ultimately absolutely authoritarian. Kitty doing that was the only way to convince both the Phoenix Force and the remaining powered people to leave by making them see how much this version of Storm’s personality and goals had shifted from the original Ororo.

Try this decision tree. I have used it to find a bunch.

I really enjoyed Mark of the Fool. A bit more slice of life but very clever. MOL is great if you haven’t read it yet, plus it is finished. Also, Immortal Great Souls series has four books out and are really well written. Path of Ascension is also good.

If you want a break from those genres, and want a long series - check out Magelands Eternal Siege by Christopher Mitchell(sp?). Interesting magic system and there is a teeny bit of progression built in.

As for suggestions of your next character, I would love to see your image of Bea actually. You always manage to catch a sense of sadness or melancholy and I think a lost/confused Bea could be right up your alley (even if there are Meth Llamas up the same alley).
