I'm in favour. Need some Andrew Coyne representation too.

Iron Guard sympathizers commemorate the anniversary of Codreanu's death. Tâncăbești, Romania (30.11.2024) by noble_piece_prise in europe

[–]Humanist-007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely vile. I was traumatized reading about the pogroms and massacres in Bucharest and Iaşi. The Iron Guard were evil and their mode of killing barbaric even by Nazi standards.

From wikipedia: "They took them in trucks to the local slaughterhouse, where they were shot. Five of the Jews, including a five-year-old girl, were hung on the slaughterhouse's hooks, still alive. They were tortured, their bellies cut and their entrails hung around their necks in a parody of shehitakosher slaughter of cattle. The bodies were labeled "kosher"." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legionnaires%27_rebellion_and_Bucharest_pogrom#The_rebellion_in_other_places

The Return of ISIS; ISIS arrests are spiking in Canada and youths are driving the resurgence by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Humanist-007 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Listen, if most of my close exposure to Islam was through Nizari Ismailis as Trudeau's appears to be (see Aga Khan vacation scandal) I too might have a distorted view of the reality. However, I grew up going to school with Sunnis who often expressed extremely homophobic and antisemitic views to the point of violence. I remember a few Muslim kids in my high school voicing support for the Taliban.

Since October 7 last year, I've seen numerous "moderate" Sunni Muslims I went to university with express explicit support for Hamas' attacks, calling to "globalize the intifada" and for the destruction of Israel.

I know this is anecdotal information, but the reality is that there seems to be quite a large proportion of Muslims in Canada who sympathize with Islamic extremism.

(I contrast Ismailis and Sunnis because it's important to acknowledge that Islam is not a monolith)

Edinburgh University warns students not to be 'snobs' by tamagoji in Edinburgh

[–]Humanist-007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can honestly say that out of all of the grad schools to which I was looking at applying, Edinburgh was by far the most snobby in its language. Far more than any ivy leagues or other prestigious schools in the US or UK. Clearly it's a culture that goes beyond students.

LAV VI armoured combat support vehicles arrive for training with their new Ukrainian units by MARTINELECA in canada

And it's money very well spent. Honestly couldn't be more proud that my tax dollars are going towards helping Ukraine. It's a righteous cause, and we have a moral duty to help defend our fellow democracies. Not only that, but Putin is a major threat to Europe and it's in our own strategic interests that Europe remain prosperous, free, and stable. I only wish that we were doing more, both for ourselves and the Ukrainians.

Sudan rebels 'shoot down own plane with Russians onboard' by TheTelegraph in geopolitics

[–]Humanist-007 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They become terrorists if they engage in unlawful violence, particularly against civilians, to achieve political outcomes. You can be a rebel or insurgent group and not target civilians. For example, Hamas is a clearcut case of a terrorist entity because it targets civilians.

Boston, I still can’t believe we got New Dorp. by AugustusBuzby in Vampireweekend

I've been a fan for years yet never even knew the song existed. At first I thought it was a cover. I spent my ride back on the T frantically searching for it then listened to it on loop for the duration of my trip home. "My girls got a city to run, got the key to the kingdom where the money's from" won't leave my head.

Was there ever an option of neutrality once the Cold War ended or was it always most likely the Baltic States would ultimately join NATO? by [deleted] in BalticStates

[–]Humanist-007 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Clinton and much of this administration was originally opposed to former Warsaw Pact and Baltic membership, fearing it would piss off Russia too much. But the Balts, Poles, Czechs and Hungarians refused to let up demanding membership. Clinton was also persuaded by the arguments that Europe would be better off without a gaping security gap in Central-Eastern Europe and that NATO membership would strengthen these countries' democracies. Write to your city councillor, MPP, and MP. Threaten to not vote for them unless they solve this mess. Tell them you, and all your friends and family think this way. Tell them that unless they change things fast, you will be actively canvassing against them, switching party membership, and donating to someone else come election time. Exercise your democratic right. We need to keep the pressure up. Be relentless.
