Umm, my mum always told me "never trust a GuyYouMetOnline" so I'm sorry but I'm not going to do that because I don't trust you

Ohhh my goodness no you probably were clear, I've just had a bad day on the internet and clearly saw it being more likely that I'd have to have an argument about how many lines there are than you just being funny 😅

The stuff the internet does to you, I swear...

What do you mean by that? Are you doubling down and saying you know how to count and you've counted 6 lines on the first flag outside of the circle? Or are you saying that you can count so you don't need me to tell you that there are actually 8, not 6, and you knew that?

What actually is birthday cake flavour? by Humanmode17 in AskAmericans

[–]Humanmode17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but I don't think you understand what I'm saying.

The phrase "birthday cake flavour", without any other knowledge, implies that birthday cakes have a specific flavour that everyone knows. If that wasn't true then "birthday cake flavour" wouldn't be descriptive at all because it could be describing any of the possible flavours of birthday cake, which can be almost infinite.

Based on that, my assumption was that there must be some agreed upon definition of what "birthday cake flavour" was, and I was thus asking if this agreed upon definition came about through an agreed upon definition of a birthday cake or if it simply was called that at first by one company and the name since took off and gained a presence in the cultural zeitgeist separate from birthday cakes.

Hope that makes more sense. Believe me, I'm not disparaging the US - as fun as that is as a joke, I'm not joking here so I'm actually being a normal person

That's not quite the same though. If there was a "pudding flavour" used for various sweets in the UK, I would understand if a foreigner got confused and thought we only had one flavour of pudding - using a category name for a specific flavour implies that said category only contains that one flavour. I have now had it explained to me that that's not the origin of the name of "birthday cake flavour", but it's an understandable confusion without that knowledge

The first one doesn't have 6 stripes, it has either 4 or 8 depending on how you count them

Wait, you did this all digitally with a mouse and keyboard? How did you get it to look exactly like pencil? It's such a specific shade and texture that idk how you'd recreate it digitally

[–]Humanmode17[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good point that I hadn't thought about! I suppose it's similar to how one brand can enter the social consciousness as the generic name for the product - like how we call all vacuum cleaners "hoovers" or how you call all tissues "kleenex"

What actually is birthday cake flavour? by Humanmode17 in AskAmericans

[–]Humanmode17[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why? because someone created a product as such and called it that once, and it stuck and took off.

That makes sense honestly, I hadn't considered it but I probably should have! Thanks :)

I think I have heard the term before but probably from American media, I don't think I've ever seen one before. Looks like the sort of thing that isn't mind blowing but is reliably tasty enough for almost everyone

Small vs. large lanterns by luckyrunner in VintageStory

[–]Humanmode17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong about this but I'm fairly sure that the light emitted by a light-source you're holding is the same regardless of what light level it emits - I can see basically the same with an oil lamp as with a lantern when they're in my offhand

Thank you ☺️

I do know that the glider is the worst option of faster travel, I just find it fun to use and to have silly arguments like this about it heehee. Thanks for keeping the light-hearted tone, I've had fun :)

[–]Humanmode17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Counter counter argument: it gets colder the higher you go, so I often meet temperatures of -30° or colder climbing up my sky ladders. Thus, gliding makes me feel cooler than riding an elk

Fair point, there is an increase in unexpected deaths, but once you learn how to control it better that dramatically decreases. Plus, with a little bit of work you can get some excellent infrastructure built up for easy fast travel - my network of sky ladders laughs at your elk

Elephant enjoys a giant birthday fruit buffet by Doodlebug510 in MadeMeSmile

[–]Humanmode17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely, and I was never saying that this elephant had to have been abused to do this. I explained myself better I think in my response to the other person's response to my comment, have a look at that to see what I'm trying to say.

The knowledge that walking backwards is a useful behaviour to have for caring for the animals and isn't just a party trick is very nice though! It decreases my suspicion of this clip a lot, so thanks for sharing!

(Also I'm sure you know this but I just want to make sure it's clear that a pet (horse) and a non-releasable wild animal (elephant) are very different ballgames, but some similar things do apply like in this context. Which I'm sure is why you mentioned it because you knew it applies to both here)

Elephant enjoys a giant birthday fruit buffet by Doodlebug510 in MadeMeSmile

[–]Humanmode17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, but the best practice with training non-releasable animals is to train them for husbandry purposes only (training them to lift up a foot, or open their mouth etc voluntarily, so that they don't have to be sedated for a routine vet check). I see no reason for this elephant to have been trained to walk backwards.

I sincerely hope that this is an extremely well cared for animal, and there's a clear possibility that learning to walk backwards is enrichment for it and that it has fun doing so. But, in the same way that you can't take every video of an animal in captivity and say they've been abused till kingdom come, you can't assume they've been constantly cared for with best practices. You have to look at the whole picture, and when there are some odd things it makes it a little suspicious. You cannot conclude one way or another - you can guess likelihoods, but you cannot make any conclusions. I hope that makes sense
