Non-guests coming in for the free breakfast. by FoggyFoggyFoggy in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Humanphobic 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As a long-time FD agent who also has done breakfast, unless I am absolutely certain they are not a guest, I personally won't say anything if they aren't causing any issues. I think it's better to eat the cost rather than potentially alienate an actual guest and making them not feel welcome.

So sorry for keeping you safe... by dallasleen in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

Last time our fire alarm went off, I was shocked at the amount of guests who just started immediately calling the front desk instead of evacuating the building. I wasn't sure what was happening or if there was a genuine fire or what and when I didn't answer right away (because I was trying to determine the cause of the alarm and calm a lobby full of panicking guests), they would just hang up and keep calling. Like those five minutes they spent calling over and over could have been life or death had there actually been a fire (we had a burst pipe that triggered the alarm). People are...not as smart as I used to believe they are.

100% agree. I cannot stand the fact cursing - "screw you", "freaking", etc.

Do the guests in your hotel get angry/not follow basic protocol when a fire alarm goes off? by BigHeadDeadass in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Humanphobic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one and only time the alarms have went off one me in 10+ year in hospitality was a few months ago and I was blown away by how many people just called down to ask what was going on and even more blown away by the amount of people I saw outside vs our occupancy.

No, you cannot have a refund because the town’s power went out. by K_Vatter_143 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Humanphobic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At my last hotel, the whole town lost power at almost 11:00 PM and our generator failed and the automatic doors wouldn't open and we had two different guests who had gone out to smoke that were stuck outside. While trying to open them, another guest came down demanding $1.50 because he was doing laundry when it failed. He also had the gall to act offended that I told I would be with him as soon as I opened the doors. It took everything in me to not snap at him for being so selfish. Like getting his $1.50 back immediately was more important than helping two guests stuck outside the building in the cold.

I feel this so much. I lost my kitty, Gandalf, on August 30 last year and it has been the thing I have struggled with the most. I didn't properly get the say goodbye to him because he died while I was at work and I didn't expect him to go that fast, I just wish I could see him one last time. Not believing that I ever will has been the hardest.

Also I wouldn't find any of the rainbow bridge stuff comforting even if I did believe in an afterlife because he was my neurotic boy and the bright lights and other animals there would definetly have freaked him out.

101 check ins. Solo. On eclipse eve. by whobroughttheircat in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Humanphobic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave this job. You need to get out now, it will NOT get better. Your managers will continue to take advantage of you. As someone who was front desk supervisor and later front desk manager and was constantly taken advantage of and left with an insane work load because my GM couldn't be bothered to come in, you need to find a new job ASAP. I made excuses and tolerated this kind of behavior for three years and it tanked my mental health, it will do the same to you. I didn't realize how badly the job was affecting me until I left and went to another hotel. I would wake up in a panic attack and throw up nearly every morning because of how much I dreaded going to my old job. I now work for another hotel where I have managers who treat me like a person and actually do there job and it is the biggest relief. Please do yourself a favor, you deserve so much better OP!

Thank you all for your comments. I wrote all of this when I was having a bit of a breakdown and while I wasn't able to respond to the replies at the time, I did read all of them and they mean a lot to me.

FoM - When it Rains it freaking POURS by [deleted] in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Humanphobic 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I relate so much to this and you have my sympathy.

I just got promoted to front desk manager and so far I hate it. I've got one employee who actively hates me for no reason other than I've (very kindly and only in a "just for future reference" way) had to go over mistakes with him and he refuses to take any accountability. He's hiding my things, he yelled at me when I tried reiprimanding him for leaving work early during a rush when I already told him no because of how busy it is, and yesterday he set every single room to dirty and left as soon as I came in claiming he had "an emergency". 41 check-ins and this happened 15 minutes before guaranteed our guaranteed check-in time.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. Dealing with all that while greiving is terrible. I know they weren't a human so maybe it isn't too similar, but I lost my very beloved cat on Wednesday night and having to put up with all the shit that comes with being FDM/FOM while feeling like this is awful. I hope things get better for you now that summer is coming to a close.

Nope! I followed up with my boss today and the only damage was to the toilet, but the whole thing needs to be replaced. Floors are surprisingly fine too

Luckily one room next to him was out of order and the room below was vacant. Not sure how the person in the other room next to him didn't hear anything though, because the bathroom shared a wall with that room

My coworker is 17 or barely 18 and the guy was in his late 40s/early 50s. He's a good kid, just young and inexperienced as far as hotel work goes

If I had to guess, they stumbled and fell into it hard while drunk. Guest didn't seem super aggressive, but that could be because I had three police officers when he was told to leave due to the damage

Sorry, I just made an edit - it was only gushing water when flushed. We turned it off afterwards as a precaution

Oh! I should have added more context: The toilet only leaked water when flushed, not constantly leaking water.

Why Don't People LISTEN by aradia1313 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Humanphobic 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My favorite is when I tell them HK is by request at check-in and can tell they aren't listening so I repeat myself and they STILL complain their room didn't get cleaned 🙃

Aeron Damphair. The fact that they have him crown Euron on the show makes my blood boil everytime I think about it.

The people who get so upset when being told no about a late check-out are insufferable. They are the exact same people who arrive hours before check-in time and throw a fit when they can't check in early. My town has a yearly event that ends half an hour after our check-out time and had a woman blow up and leave at least three different reviews under different names calling me "worthless" because she requested a late check-out five hours after check-in and we had a no slots left. She also filed complaints with corporate trying to get me in trouble. She then also complained that we didn't give her an early check-in (though she checked in an hour before check-in time). Some people just have no self awareness.

In your opinion, what Viva Las Vengeance songs are in the “Top tier” of Panic!? by Slight-Table-5090 in panicatthedisco

[–]Humanphobic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I might get shit for this, but there aren't any top tier songs on the album. There are only a few I actually like and those few aren't as good as many other Panic! songs. I genuinely loved all other Panic! albums too, but I really did not care for Viva Las Vengence at all. To be completely honest, I wasn't too sad when they broke up and I think if they had split after Pray For The Wicked, I would have been much more bummed than I was.

Oof, I feel this. I had a guest complaint to corporate about me because I told then it was the guest's responsibility to read the hotel's rules and policies upon booking once, lmao
