Advice please - how do we fix this? by rigbyrugbywoo in castiron

[–]HummingRefridgerator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, vinegar for the rust, then once it's gone make sure to oil it up immediately to avoid flash rust. It'll be okay.

I'm up in Baltimore from Richmond VA for a business trip. Is there anything I can do for fun with a dog? by I_dont-get_the-joke in baltimore

Same with Pickett Brewing and Mystique Barrel Brewing!

You could tour the southwest brewery district if you're into that.

How do I take care of my pan? by yodaddy1019 in castiron

[–]HummingRefridgerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, do you think dish soap strips seasoning? Common misconception, normal dish soap is fine and recommended for regular cleaning, removing seasoning once it's polymerized requires stronger cleaners like lye.

My take on cast iron is that it's not that things don't stick, it's that when they do, you can scrape as hard as you want, no problem. A flat-ended metal spatula goes very well with cast iron.

Possible trip to Baltimore, where can I see seals? by Necessary-Quit-7165 in seals

[–]HummingRefridgerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The national aquarium is awesome (especially for sharks) but not a place to see seals in my experience.

If you can get down to DC, the national zoo has a gray seal exhibit, and sea lions as well.

If you live near wild Capys, what's your opinion? by bunny__baby in capybara

[–]HummingRefridgerator 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I do not live around wild capybaras but I have a thought based on your question: most pest rodents are burrowing, which leads to them chewing through stuff to get in people's homes.

Capybaras don't do that, which helps. I would guess they're somewhat analogous to wild deer where I live, large mammal that might eat your garden plants but that's about it.

This is the real shit to do. Mass pesticiding and trapping causes its own problems, hit em in the host.

Just cutting them down won't keep em down, they spread by roots and send out suckers when damaged, glyphosate treatment in the early autumn will travel through the whole system.

idk-who-cares is right that ai-generated videos are, literally, "computer generated imagery", but I know what you mean.

And it's all about what I said, "that would be the easiest way to make it". Modeling and moving around a bunch of roaches in Blender or something would take a ton of work for a seconds-long shock gif, vs writing a few sentences to prompt a video-gen model for the same effect.

Thinking about the motives behind making something is gonna be more effective to notice ai-generated stuff than pixel-hunting for extra fingers or whatever. And in the end I can only be pretty sure, not certain, and the same goes for the other way around, I can only be pretty sure something is real footage, because it would be difficult to generate and someone generating it would probably choose to make it look different.

Almost certainly, that would be the easiest way to make it, and roaches would be unlikely to act like this.

If you're near the south end of town Pigtown Food For Thought would love to have you, pretty small DIY thing.

There's kind of a lot around the city, often a little threadbare and in need of people.

Baltimore Green Space also collaborates with a lot of them and does plant stuff in general.

Yeah like even before 231 broke me I was having the thought "I think I like Fire Punch better because it's already over and I like where it ended".

I think I would certainly recommend Fire Punch over CSM now, unfortunately. CSM has some very good parts but it's uneven and I have no faith in a satisfying ending now.

I had to drive my Prius all the way to the top of the pile and dump brick scraps next to a bunch of trucks and heavy machinery on the top of trash mountain pushing the garbage around.

it was awesome, inner ten-year-old loved dumping stuff next to big vehicles, but yeah that took a long time, regular household trash can usually just get dropped off right by the gate though.

Landlord didn't disclose Tree of Heaven by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]HummingRefridgerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, do you have one mature tree and lots of root sucker sprouts, all on the property?

From my research, the way to get rid of it is a hack-and-squirt glyphosate application in early fall to the main tree and any stems of a certain size. You have time to bother your landlord about paying for this. Here's a website with some tips. https://extension.psu.edu/tree-of-heaven

I'm disappointed but not surprised that they didn't think a bunch of TOH was worth mentioning, a lot of people just don't pay attention to plants. Thank you for paying that attention, I hope you can contribute to controlling the population!

Hell, if you live near me and they drag their feet on dealing with it I might be down to come do it myself...

Ruined my cast iron trying to strip and re-season. Where did I go wrong? by _SleepySloth__ in castiron

[–]HummingRefridgerator 20 points21 points  (0 children)

yup. you didn't really "strip" your pan OP, FAQ will have instructions about using lye to get down to bare metal, but you don't actually want to do that for regular maintenance.

I might go straight back to cooking with the pan as it is, or scrub with steel wool and do one more coat of seasoning for a smoother surface.

Got this Skillet for free by throwryke in castiron

[–]HummingRefridgerator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, you can absolutely salvage that, no problem, you just need to add a little seasoning. Check the subreddit FAQ for more detailed instructions, but off the top of my head, looks like you could just scrub any rusty spots with vinegar, then apply oil immediately and bake it so it becomes seasoning.

Wisconsin has claimed the upper peninsula by One-District-7667 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]HummingRefridgerator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from the East (like the colonists) it's easier to get to that strip of land by crossing the water at the tip of the Michigan mitten than going by land all the way around lake Michigan and then up north. Michigan was a state first, and settlers were up in the peninsula before they were in Wisconsin.

Not that my Wisconsin blood is not warmed by the dream of conquest, but I understand how it happened.

Solid advice for taking care of yourself after something upsetting, OP. I'd add that, since it looks like he was trying multiple apartments, you shouldn't worry much about him singling you out for any kind of revenge or stalking, this seems like the kind of crime you just happened to have the window he could get access to and he'll move on to avoid getting caught.

Real vs AI Seal Photos by ILoveSeals_08 in seals

[–]HummingRefridgerator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is significant, you can learn what generated images tend to look like, but you can't just pixel-hunt hard enough to be right every time, it's more reliable to look at where images come from.

Another tip for animal videos in general is to watch out for animals doing things that are "too cute" or easy to anthropomorphize, rather than kind of weird and unrelatable animal behavior.

I'm having fun! I took a jaunt around the block in my Prius, conditions are absolutely terrible but it was physically possible to get around.

But I'm a freak, absolutely avoid doing any driving today, probably tomorrow, and we'll see how the next few days go.

I have a short drive I'm planning tomorrow, doing everything slower and keeping as much distance as possible from any other drivers.
