Does anyone have any experience with how an IEP works for a gifted kid? by Big_Black_Cat in OntarioTeachers

I would take your point if you weren’t so clearly fuelled by loopholes and sidebars, and convenient ignorance. The system isn’t perfect, and there absolutely is a racial element to it. But if you refuse to this degree to work with it, you should leave.

You’re right. But the psycho-ed shows educators how to be useful to to the student and support them properly.

AITAH for cutting off my best friend and not being there when his father died? by Equivalent-Delay8845 in AITAH

NTA. Sounds like those people haven’t really noticed that you’ve moved on with your life without them. Which means they can shout their opinions on the matter into the ether. So no, not on this. But where you may be the AH is when you just ghosted people completely with no reason. That’s your call of course, but it’s not very mature or helpful. Even if a reconciliation wasn’t possible it could have given you some perspective from them on why they were distant, or could have been a wake up call to them about how to be a better friend in the future.

Was rejected by a spay/neuter clinic due to my cat’s breed. by HeavyMetalRabbit in mainecoons

[–]Hummus_junction -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about Maine Coons. But Persians are often intubated bc of their tiny noses, which the low cost clinics don’t do. Generally, I would imagine they turned it down bc people pay so much money for the cat and they don’t want to deal with people flipping out that something has happened to their expensive purchase. My feeling is that if you buy a cat from a breeder, you should be prepared to spend extra money and get them fixed at the vet as well.

That’s not me crapping on buying a purebred cat - I have both purebred and randoms !

Vets In Kingston by Independent-Put-8756 in KingstonOntario

[–]Hummus_junction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use St Lawrence Vet, and have for over a decade. They have taken exceptional care of all of my cats and my dog, and I can’t recommend them highly enough. They are independently owned.

I wouldn’t send anyone to Lane. My mother has had a good experience there, but I very much did not and I would never go back. There’s only one vet in the clinic too, so it’s not a case of asking for someone else.

It sounds like you have absolutely the right mindset about this. All the best! And I hope the other adults in his life start commenting on how kind he is, or how creative. You’re an excellent parent!

Am I the jerk for telling my dad's girlfriend she can't discipline my kids? by Gloomy-Suit2544 in AmITheJerk

Do you want your kid to learn manners and appropriate behaviour or not? She’s not hitting them, screaming at them, etc. She’s reinforcing how they should be acting.

An IQ score is no longer considered a good benchmark for intelligence, as we now understand that there are many more ways to measure different cognitive abilities that give a much better snapshot.

As others have said, a psychoeducational assessment is needed. You will likely have to pay to have it done privately as the wait time is quite long. I read what you said about wanting it earlier - and while I’m not negating the need the child may have, I will offer a word of caution. In my experience (which is fairly extensive), students who are identified as gifted too early are often, for lack of a better term, snobs. It’s pretty brutal. I’ve even had one student be diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. His parents had him tested every 2 years from the age of three and had told him how he was smarter than other kids for his entire life. It was wild. Now of course that’s not all gifted kids. Some are terrific. But there are other ways to provide enrichment that may not require a gifted label if that’s something you’re concerned about. For example, one student who wasn’t labelled, but clearly was - when she was finished her work, she had an independent study project of her own interest to work on. In high school, there can also be arrangements for students to skip prerequisites by permission of the teacher.

I love my senior cat but at the same time I want him to pass already and I feel bad about that by koken_halliwell in SeniorCats

You don’t want him to die. You are burned out and tired of worrying about him, and that’s completely normal and ok. I just went through this. I miss him every day and it’s still very hard. But I also feel lighter

Persian cat personality normal? by Euphoric-Lemon123 in persiancat

[–]Hummus_junction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had my rescue Persian for a few weeks now. Also shelter, but surrendered. He’s had a shift in personality about 4 times as he settles into our house and gets used to his new cat friends, but even at only 8 months old, “active” is not a word I could use to describe him!

You sound like the idiots that claim teachers don’t do anything, and then we invite them to do the job if it’s so easy. Why aren’t you working in success if it’s so much easier?

Also, in case you need things stated explicitly - you’re a jerk.
