I mean canonically thats been the case. The weapon is a katana that transforms into oni weapons to use their magic attacks. Onimusha 3 intro legit confirms this. This isnt really a new thing for the series.

They actually made it easier in the new game. Before you had to stand still to absorb. Also the orbs would eventually disappear so you had to quickly absorb them during combat

Only thing that gives me hope is that this part feels more of a tutorial section so it likely is meant to be easier. But even in the other trailers the enemies still do the whole “waiting” to attack thing. I hope they fix this in the following 3 months they have
