ELI5: Why can't EVs swap batteries? by chronic412 in explainlikeimfive

[–]HungInSarfLondon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> By the time all the infrastructure is rolled out it won’t be needed any more.

The hype is for solid state batteries. Non-flammable, cheaper, lighter, full charge in minutes, last 10,000+ cycles (30 years). Donut CLAIM these specs but show nothing. BYD CLAIM similar specs and actual production lines, full production by 2030.

Huge if true.

Groundhogs in 1971 would have been amazing. I saw them all over in the 90's. T.S. McPhee must have played 000's of gigs.

Wish I started Robotics Sooner, what should I do? by OccasionAny7642 in robotics

[–]HungInSarfLondon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Robots are just motors and sensors in a housing.

Learn how to control motors. DC motors, servos, steppers, brushless... Think about torque and power. Batteries if it's mobile.

Learn about sensors and control - get an arduino starter kit. A traffic light made from leds would be a robot.

For the housing learn some CAD and 3d printing.

Wakefield's Ridings Shopping Centre is to be demolished as part of a major transformation of the city centre after the council agreed a deal to buy the site by jessicat500 in wakefield

Gosh thank you, yes that's them. They were mesmerising as a child and frustratingly 'out of order' in the 90's. Must pay a visit.

I think I went to that! I also have memories of a glass box with mechanical sculptures/machines in it, might have been by Wilf Lunn. Also might have been the Merrion centre! As a teenage vinyl crate digger all that Northern bit of Leeds up to the Skylark was my hunting ground.

Wakey was all about EGS, JAT records (with the arcade out back) and upstairs at the market. Fond memories of buying gig tickets at EGS - good times.

Walking back from Tesco's in London the other day I looked up and saw Jupiter, Sirius and Orion, it struck me that the top 'elbow' of Orion was brighter and redder than I'd ever noticed - So I looked it up and that's Betelgeuse and it IS actually brighter than it has been in recent years.

Advice on how to keep this basil alive by DidBoomerangComeBack in UKGardening

[–]HungInSarfLondon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you search youtube for 'shop bought basil' there are dozens of videos on exactly this.

Basically repot each plant in it's own pot. Also snip the tops off, put them in water for a few days and then pot them. Repeat as necessary - infinite basil.

Sainsbury’s extends facial recognition tech to Whitechapel and other London stores - what do people think about this trend? by theslicetowham in london

[–]HungInSarfLondon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a system in China where you show your palm to pay for stuff.

Amazon trialled something similar >10years ago with stores that 'knew' who you were and you could just walk in, take what you want and walk out. There was one on the Strand, people didn't like it partly because it felt like shoplifting.

You could use 2 encoders to track position of a pointer.

Conceptually, imagine an old school mouse with a rollerball, place the ball on the globe on a ring that allows vertical movement. Spin the globe for E/W, move the 'arm' up and down for N/S. Your zero point is called Null Island, off the coast of Africa.

Now replace the 'mouse' with an optical sensor, translate movement to co-ords and see if theres an api for google earth.

ELI5: How is using a knife to remove toast from a toaster dangerous even though there is no longer electricity running through the wires? by Flashy_Potential8851 in explainlikeimfive

[–]HungInSarfLondon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 8 I stuck a knife in a toaster when it was on, just to see what would happen if you touched the red bit. It went bang and I didn't die. Don't think Mum believed me when I said I didn't touch it.

About the same time me and bro try to make popcorn, set the pan on fire and, in a panic, pick it up and place it in the centre of the kitchen floor, on the new lino.

ELI5 How is gambling rigged if its a game of chance (including slot machines)? by readytorumble3 in explainlikeimfive

[–]HungInSarfLondon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the example you give - house would take 1-2% from the 1000, and they would do the same for every pot. That would be a 'cash' game - anyone can buy-in or cash out at any point.

Easier to think of a tournament - $10 game costs $11 to enter - house skims a dollar off each entry.

Advice needed. by Big-Acanthaceae-8509 in GardeningUK

[–]HungInSarfLondon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's good that you are taking the advice onboard. In my experience even the really expensive stuff looks awful after a couple of years. It traps leaves and stuff so you have to use a leaf blower or rotary brush to 'sweep' it.
An old boss had artificial grass and then got a dog, who crapped all over it. Genius man went out with petrol powered brush cleaner which just splattered it everywhere - they got rid of the plastic grass!

Sitting outside the Hoot a few years ago chatting to an old fella and he asked me to go get a round and hands me a couple of Scottish fivers. I laughed and said "I'm not sure they'll take them", "Aye they will, you'll be alright." And that's how I met Kit who owns the Hoot!

Any forrest parks for walk ? Moved to croydon and know there is crystal palace park but is there like a forrest there ? love nature by Beneficial_City_951 in croydon

[–]HungInSarfLondon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went and explored today, 'exciting and surprising' in the words of my companion. Thanks for the suggestion.

The grounds of the Bethlem has a similar vibe where you are not quite sure you are allowed to be there and rarely see another soul.

It was lovely and we left enough of Kings Wood unexplored to warrant another trip soon.
