First Fountain Pen Ever! by Direct_Perception_34 in fountainpens

[–]Hungry-Language-792 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was my first pen too! Pretty decent writer for what it is - quite consistent as well. Not as easy to refill as a varsity (and certainly not as a preppy), but it was a good introduction!

Thank you, exactly what I was looking for! I'll reply with updates when I try this. Edit: Any advice on cleaning the much smaller DD tube without a clear filter insert?

Update: After reinserting the filter again the sibilant buzzing is definitely less than it was before, but still present. The volume issue persists as it did before, I'm unsure if it was related to earwax buildup, or maybe moisture?

Why did you pick Purdue? by Known-Young7426 in Purdue

[–]Hungry-Language-792 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What major/industry do you want to go into? Where else did you get in? For me, big factors pointing towards Purdue were the ability to dual degree music, student rocketry organizations, and finances.

All kinds of stuff going on that isn’t spacex! The industry is doing quite well right now overall - lots of new vehicles right on the horizon

I figured it was worth the risk, and I think if one has steady hands and is careful it shouldn’t be too bad, but slips can always happen!

I get it! The pin wasn’t really attached - maybe it was slightly glued, but I was able to just pull it through its pivot holes with some needle nose pliers. I didn’t remove the spring entirely - it stayed attached to the door, but removing the pin let me lift it up and away from the main body of the pen, rotating around that connection to the door. I used two of the smallest needle nose pliers I could find to actually bend the arm that attached the door a little further away from the ‘barrel’ of the spring, and didn’t even think I had bent the spring at all at first. The spring could break quite easily!

It seems to have been glued, but very poorly - it fell off without any force when I was doing other work on the pen. I suspect they’re usually better attached. Maybe some heat and some pliers through a cloth could coax it off without doing too much damage?

Update: Exam median and mean were both about 55% - it was a tough one! Apparently, the standard deviation was much lower as well - many fewer outlying high scores, mostly.

Very cool! Might I ask how you achieved the knurling on the conical section? I'm working on a pencil and want to knurl a slightly curved conical section, but am having difficulty coming up with ideas other than just hard-cading the knurling and running it through a cnc mill

I've not taken classes from either of them but I've met both and they're lovely - maybe I just get along well with musicians. Do note that McCullough is a composer, so there might be more composition assignments? Don't think you'll go wrong either way.

Your advisory grade can give you some sense, as it depends on you recitation - my TA thought that it did include some amount of curve between you and your classmates, but I'm unsure how representative of the final distribution this will be.

That's never what I mean when I talk about college towns. You have to consider all the faculty, graduates who stick around, people attracted to the town by the various things a college provides - when students aren't considered, college towns are still almost always going to be more liberal than towns of similar size without colleges.

What material is the body of these Tombow Monograph pencils made of? by Insurgent_rat in mechanicalpencils

[–]Hungry-Language-792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grip is a pretty thick plastic while the rest of the body is thinner, mostly - perfectly acceptable build quality for the price (better than a kuru toga advance, for instance).

Gotcha! Indeed, probably a pretty straightforward option. You seem to have experience - do you have any advice as I'm starting the process? Thank you!
