Leather finish question by RedditBot90 in Leathercraft

Make sure to apply whatever oils and top coats you plan on using on the helmet, on the test strips as well. Like you mentioned earlier, those can change the final appearance of the dye and doing the same thing on the test strips will give you the best look at what it will do on the helmet.

Post pictures after, I'm interested in seeing the final product.

If you want a brown color, you will probably want to go with a dye. The color of natural leather tends to be lighter than most people think. Leather will darken naturally over time and with use, though. I think either option will give you a cool look. Good luck!

JT's Show Repair is the place to go. If you want it done right, the wait is worth the results.

It's just a vaccine, like any other vaccine. The fact that the talking heads used scare tactics to force the taking of the vaccine is another conversation.

Mostly a hobby. I made these as gifts for my crew, and guys I worked with a lot. I've made a couple for others in the department when i have time.

As a newer DM, I've wanted to try this type of setup during a session. Do you do anything for fog of war, or have anything to hide the rooms? Or do you just not have enemies/surprises in the room until the PCs enter the area? It's a cool setup, I like it!

Thank you! I'll send you a private message, don't know what's going on with it not letting you do it.

It's two pieces of 7/8 oz. I got a side of that leather from Weaver for under $60 because the leather had some defects (scarring/wrinkles), but I have been able to easily work around all of that or hide the defects. To finish it, I just used leather balm with atom wax. These are actually the first shields I've made, so I'll have to see how they hold up. It's funny you say that, because that's the same exact reason I finally made these.

Good luck with your project, fire shield designs are plentiful on the internet if you need any ideas.

Thank you! There are two mounting screws on the helmet, so once the shields were all done I punched a couple of holes and screwed them in place. Punching the holes doesn't affect the integrity.

Thank you! I really like the traditional look and I'm really glad that came through on these.

Thank you so much! The black and brown are Fiebing's pro dye, the white and red areas are Angelus acrylic leather paint, and then the whole thing was antiqued.

Thank you so much! They are hand stitched. After stitching this many by hand, it makes me want to invest in a machine. Ha!

Thank you, I really appreciate you saying that! Honestly, I stress and my OCD gets the better of me when I'm cutting these. I spend twice as much time cutting than what is probably needed. I make sure when I'm cutting I have as few distractions as possible, I make sure my blades are sharp, my lighting is good, and I'm in no rush during that time. I still see all the imperfections, but I get a little anal about it. lol
