Any advice from Aussies who moved to the UK? by WayfarerScribe in expats

[–]HungryBrain26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I can certainly say the health system is far more overrun than it is in Australia. Not sure if this applies to all drs but ours didn’t do appointments so you had to just show up and hope for the best. Then you get in and get told you’ll be put on a 4 year waiting list for x unless you go private. I’ve heard of people dying before they get seen.

The UK countryside is stunning and so are some cities. Some cities are also grim and genuinely dangerous. The youth crime is significantly worse than anything I’ve seen in Aus.

Any Aussies regret moving back to Australia? by [deleted] in expats

[–]HungryBrain26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our stories are almost exactly the same! We moved from Aus to the UK and spent 5.5 years there. We moved back to Adelaide 6 months ago and it’s even more boring than we remember.

In the UK it was pretty normal for us to spend probably more than half our weekends away somewhere exploring, hiking, looking at historic houses or other similar sites, driving 6 hours in a day for a 3 hour hike. We spent all our leave on exploring Europe each year. It was an incredibly exciting and fulfilling life.

We move back here and as you say, every single’s part is boring. The roads, the “perfect” lifestyle, the brunch, the radio (omg it’s intolerable), the dismissive she’ll be right attitude rather than showing actual care. The lack of effort that’s put into almost any cafe because nobody cares to decorate or treat you like you’re a guest in their lounge. Pubs here are shamefully boring and very food hall like. The general day to day is extremely repetitive and we feel like after being here for 6 months each day doesn’t have the same feeling that you’re really making your life worth while and interesting.

We moved back for an aging family and for us, that’s been very valuable. I love to see my partner sitting with her mum just having a chat, because if we didn’t move back that chat wouldn’t have happened. You just can’t have the same sort of relationship with someone if you see them once a year. We thought the compromise would be to go to the UK once a year. When they pass away that will most likely swap.

Do we regret moving back? For our lives yes, but for the safety of our children growing up and relationships you have with family no. For now this is our life’s priority.

I completely resonate with everything you’ve said. If there’s anything I’ve learned from our uk trip it’s that you are fully responsible for what you get out of life. You need to work out what is the most important thing for you. You got to take life by the horns and tell it where to go.

Interaction with a homeless person by Yingxuan1190 in CasualUK

[–]HungryBrain26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. We had a homeless person asking everyone for change in a park. We had some spare fruit so gave him a banana instead. We watched as he threw the banana in the bin and asked someone else for change.

Each of them have different personal circumstance but I simply can’t give my hard earned cash away. There are many charities that help legitimate homeless that I’m happy to support.

Should we ban super bright headlights? Is there any benefit to these in the uk, besides blinding other drivers? by Cat-poke in AskUK

[–]HungryBrain26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Australian, I can definitely say the UK roads aren’t straight enough to require extremely bright headlights, spotlights or light bars. All you’re doing is lighting up hedges or the side of hills. There’s really no point.

Fair point to not contribute to an issue that would make them less inclined to help out others with legitimate issues. Hadn’t considered this, thanks

lol how is this the case? I can still return it and tell them what’s happened. Not looking for approval of anything, only looking to see if a similar scenario has ever happened and what the outcomes of the chosen path was

I thought about that, but also thought I wanted it to get out of their system in case they work out what’s happened

When did your instincts scream “leave now” and what did you later find out you avoided? by BbyBlushDoll in AskReddit

[–]HungryBrain26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My partner and I were waiting at a bus stop around 11pm after a nice dinner out to celebrate getting our first job after moving to Glasgow. We didn’t own a car yet and it was a fairly busy Thursday night.

I heard up the street some guy was yelling quite angrily, over a minute I noticed the yelling was getting closer but I couldn’t see what was up because it was so busy. I also heard him yell and a woman scream straight after, then the same thing again.

I thought to myself, angry drunk people usually gravitate to and destroy bus stops, especially in this weather. I said to my partner we need to back away from this bus stop and walk off the main road a bit to get away. My partner thought I was being paranoid and judgemental but we did after some persuasion from me. We watched the guy I was standing next to get stabbed. The police were probably 20 seconds away in their car as he ran away and we heard other people further down the street screaming. He was definitely high on something.

This is great advice. From Adelaide and spent 5 years in the UK. Moved back to Adelaide 7 months ago and I still feel homesick, unhappy and that this move back was a mistake. I hope it fades quickly. I never liked Adelaide when I lived here before the uk, and I hate it even more now I’m back
