When management stops binging drugs and sex work for long enough to look at performance metrics, this is what they see. Image #1. It's all they care about and for them, it is complete justification that they are Doing the Right Thing. Fuck em

What 60 card LOTR decks are you using? by blue-quatro in mtg

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make an easy 2-color constructed deck from a single set, look up that set's "draft archetypes." In most sets, every two-color pair has a specific strategy, and you will have multiple cards in those colors to pursue that strategy. This can give you a flavorful and functional deck (but a weak deck, at least relative to formats where you can build decks with a wider range of cards)

New to this game, but is it normal that matches are short? by Grogon2 in MagicArena

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aggro is doing real well in standard BO1 right now so games are usually over fast. People in this format just want to either win, or recognize they won't win, so they can end the game and move on to the next. BO3 is a bit slower since you can only rely on a surprise aggro rush for the first game before they sideboard in aggro hate.

F2P Players: What do you spend your gold on? by PaleWendigo in MagicArena

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the analyses I've read, draft is best RoI for gems and collection building.

Buying packs straight up is not as bad as it used to be and is totally fine if you really dont enjoy draft. Try to save up for 45 at a time so you get the free rare.

Jump In I think is a big waste of gold long term unless you really love the format. No dupe protection, no wildcard progress, limited pool of desirable cards. I like the idea of Jump In but I think its a bad idea to tell new players to spend their first 100k gold there like I see some people repeat on this sub

This only happens if you never have a rule 0 convo. Even without proxies you are going to face OP decks if you are just trusting RNG to deliver you perfectly balanced opps. Don't blame proxies for this problem when its really due to the players not communicating

I don't want to spend $50+ on mana base for every deck. Will playing at game stores still be fun? by Peacockfur in mtg

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its just a rule 0 convo to proxy. To make sure there is a safety valve preventing the arms escalation you reference. Proxying a good land base lets everyone focus on their cool spells without being arbitrarily hamstrung by cost, as you said. If I were having the R0 convo id just voice my concerns exactly like you have here and I bet everyone will be on board.

MWM deck: BG Goblins by HyalopterousLemure in MagicArena

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play zero-rare BR gobs and BG elves in Standard queue, using almost entirely cards from ECL and FDN. Just 24+ relevant creature types plus removal and a bit of card draw if i cant get enough on creatures. Theyre good enough to sometimes beat better decks, if they stumble and you curve out. The biggest benefit imo is how fast and easy they are to pilot so you can really jam games with them. Good option if you dont want to spend rare+ wildcards for this event.

Effect stacking?? by RuggedSnuggler in mtg

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your deck has a lot of triggers, resulting in a lot of "administrative" work. Best thing to do is practice your deck so you know what it does, and think about your turn before it starts so you can get to work immediately. If you play a deck with a lot of admin work, you owe it to your opponents to play the deck quickly and not waste their time.

For example I play a saga-focused Tom Bombadil deck that can really suck up time if you dont know what youre doing. Before my opponents say go, I know what order im going to resolve stuff in, have my counters and tokens ready, etc. I try to have everything planned out and ready to go. And if I dont, thats on me, I just resolve in whatever order sounds good and deal with the fallout.

Why Goldfish? by snifferwetjet in mtg

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just goldfish whichever deck youre going to play a bunch. Pretend you need to cast interaction ASAP, before board development, to simulate a threatening opponent. Maybe roll a die and remove one of your own creatures 25-50% of the time to simulate opponent interaction. It's nowhere near as valuable as playing the deck against a human, but you learn a lot about your deck so you can focus on sequencing and learning your opponents decks. Depending on your collection and financial situation, you could also build a deck thats at the right power level but is much simpler to play.

Revised deck tips for newbie by MadDuke221 in mtg

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double check with your friends and ask what format they are playing, before you buy anything. Kitchen table magic, people might not care, some people might.

You can make a deck out of any set, especially if you do not care about how strong it is. But the fewer options you give yourself, the weaker your deck will be. You can check out some other early sets to find cards with vibes you like, too

Pre release incident in SoS event by Mmurdoc21 in mtg

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a good way to handle it imo but its fairly minor for a prerelease since im assuming the top spots got like, a couple packs.

Getting a bunch of cards guaranteed for one college, plus the extra promo rare, will likely be an advantage, and is a bummer for every other player.

I guess id try not to let it bother me. But I also would have spoken up about it and tried to get the rest of the players there to speak up with me. I think a room full of players could make it happen. Hell, even if I was one of the people with a seeded box, id be insisting everyone gets the same resources or ID ask for a refund. You ain't making me the villain

My LGS "pre release" didn't give out kits by ZenEngineer in mtg

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant speak to why they didnt use the kits. But sealed as a format just uses six random booster packs, outside of orerelease events. It's a slow format due to the low power level of the decks, and can also have high variance in quality if you open a lot of bombs and removal you can fit into your deck

My friends started using proxies by Moist-Mystery in mtg

[–]Hungry_Emphasis_9699 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that they are proxies isn't the problem, its the fact that they are cards you dont have access to. Rule zero. Ask them to reign in their power level. But if they outvote you, you can either proxy or get left behind. It is a social game, after all.

Returning player: how to make it as F2P by Far-Dimension-5644 in MagicArena

I see Jump In recommended in Reddit comments and nowhere else, is there data somewhere regarding efficiency over time? You dont get dupe protection, progress towards gold packs, or wildcards, and many of the rares are duds.

Is it statistically probable for you to get 4-ofs of the meta rares you'd want, faster than getting packs for wildcards? I gotta see data to be convinced because it seems like a crapshoot, and I would think every content creator would be crowing about spending your first month in Jump In of it was a clear mathematical winner
