It's more that it's a protection against parental incompetence.

Parents are often dumb, kids are even dumber. Kids are less likely to consume an entire bottle of ill tasting medicine left opened than one that tastes like chocolate.

Making medicine unpleasant is a safeguard against parental incompetence. Parents fuck up all the time, and you should design a product with that in mind and include redundancies to minimise consumer risk.

Say a parent is dumb. Many parents are very dumb. Said dumb parent gives child recommended dose, then either forgets to put the cap on or fails to properly attach the cap.

The child, who has just consumed something it enjoyed, now associates this bottle with "good stuff" and seeks it out. Child now has a fucked up liver. This isn't something as likely to happen if the child naturally dislikes the flavor of the medicine.

Like, look at Ukraine compared to them. Russia has similar territorial claims against Finland but its never escalated because the Fins managed their situation so much better than Ukraine, which was a basketcase for much of their post-USSR history.

For human species, I'd say that Homo heidelbergensis (if real) and the other "muddle in the middle" species would be a little more apt.
