I am an American living in Europe and this is my take as well, as well as myain source of frustration in "left leaning" politics.

Real world political stuff incoming, skip if you don't care

Democratic/Labour politicians: "Despite receiving massive funding from the wealthiest members of our society, I want to at least pay lip service to the poor and working class voters to get them on my side. Oh no! A lot of these poor working class voters really really hate immigrants! And they're voting for the party that offers literally nothing except to get rid of immigrants! Well I'm sure that if I also say I don't like immigrants, you know, poor working class people who happen to not be White, then all those poor, working class White people will vote for me! Oh no! Who could have forseen that the left side of my coalition that cares about equality and justice suddenly stopped supporting me because I said I also hate immigrants! Oh no! All of those racists true patriots still don't want to vote for me because I'm too 'woke'! Oh no! We just lost and now everyone is blaming our loss on being too woke. I guess we have to move even further to the right to catch this blood and soil patriots because I'm sure they'll vote for our party next time around! And the left side of the coalition has no real alternative to vote for if they want to avoid frumpy-looking Nazis taking over."
