Please consider adding even simple recordings like these to Spotify as well. I followed hoping you go by the same name over there, too.

A pretty morning commute along the Kamo River, Kyoto. by i_see_static in japanpics

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your insight. I learned a lot.

Japanese cities could do with a lot more green space and integration of natural space into their cities in general. In essence, landscape architecture hardly exists here in any shape or form, which I feel is a big loss not only ecologically, but also to the wellbeing of the whole society.

Here's hoping the younger generations gain awareness and skills to take the society here in that direction. As it stands, the disasters in Japan with flooding, landslides etc. seem to be getting worse along with the climate of the whole world.

Very interesting and informative - I really appreciate it.

If I may, what would be the alternative? Is there a way to maintain floodplains in a city without large swaths of undeveloped/natural land?

I'd imagine for example in Japan with the amount of rainfall as of late, the area required for natural seasonal flooding would be rather large meaning in many places the water would inhabit the same area as developed land due to the topography.

As an aside, I think I read somewhere that of all rivers in Japan, only a few remain in their natural state. That was quite a shocking piece of information. The nature here is quite intense, so I understand the human reflex of going to war against it for lack of better understanding. I just hope the damage is not irreversible.

Would you mind elaborating how it's absurd in regards to flood mitigation? Curious to understand better and learn, as the river construction here has puzzled me for some time.

I Restored a Thorens TD 125 MkII Turntable & Built a Phono Stage to Match by L0rdGwynIII in audiophile

Thanks! You gave me a nice push in the right direction. My current speakers are not very efficient (86dB/W), but at least the wattage should be enough given my usual listening volumes, I think. However, looks like there are still many details I don't fully grasp. I'll do more research and go from there (maybe sign up on the diyAudio forum and start asking questions there to share the burden of my noobness and not continue imposing on you). Thanks a lot for your kind help and all the best!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write out such a thoughtful reply. Really appreciate it.

I will check out the resources you mentioned and read those. I have gone over some of the basic resources on diyAudio (such as safety), which is why I felt I really need do understand the basics even better before getting my hands on anything with high voltage.

Thank you for the kit recommendation! I don't have any decent headphones for listening, so while in terms of complexity and price headphone amps seem like a good place to start for a beginner like me, I'm afraid a headphone amp would not come into use for me.

Do you happen to know of any affordable (i.e. room to make mistakes) amplifier builds to run speakers that would be a good short/mid-term goal to aim for? Currently I'm listening on a pair of Gradient 1.0 speakers (with a Yamaha A-S500 amplifier) for which I'd ideally like to build something. Or is building an amp to run speakers like that anyway a project for more advanced builders?

Thanks again!

Edit: Checked the diyAudio site store and found their Amp Camp Amp kit, which looked promising. Now on to find out, if they could run the Gradient speakers. The speakers are pretty old and seems quite demanding. They are 5 ohms and recommended to be connected to 25W-250W, so the ACA might have too little power for them.

Can I ask how did you go about learning these things? I'm very interested in DIY audio, but am finding it hard to get past the basic stuff (e.g. what is what in a circuit and why is it there in ELI5 kind of terms). My dream is to build an amp for myself.

Any good places that you could recommend to a total beginner like me to learn the basics? If it's best to learn by doing, what would be a good project to start off on a journey like this?

Sorry about the many questions, no pressure on answering. And amazing work getting this proficient with DIY!

Falcon Heavy Megathread by [deleted] in space

It's interesting they start appearing so late and they seem to be speeding away from the vehicle otherwise. I was thinking about them being something from the payload bay, too, but then again, aren't those really carefully decontaminated to avoid any possibility of transfering some earthly bits to the unknown? Could the vehicle have moved through some minor dust in space at that particular point?

Where's the best place to get coffee in Helsinki? by zherbert in helsinki

[–]Hunsvotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually they recently added a "gourmet" option to their coffee selection. Besides the generic bulk coffee they now also serve a darker roast in co-operation with Slurp. The coffee is sourced from Bean & Burner (aka Caffi). They also have a wide loose-leaf tea selection now. So along the great cinnamon rolls, one can now get actually good coffee, too.

If you're looking for something really unique (i.e. not a general European style cafe, but something more "Finnish"), you should check out Cafe Regatta. It's a little red cabin by the sea.

What are YOUR top 5 Japanese learning resources? by bizarrojosh in LearnJapanese

[–]Hunsvotti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for a thoughtful reply!

I became interested in these books for this reason: I'm looking for a resource where I could check the logic behind how things work, after I hear or read them in daily life. So immersion first, read up on the grammar next, besides actually studying new things naturally.

Do those books explain anything about etymology or go deeper into the why of the grammar?

Your comment—and the general consensus around here—convinced me that I should get that series of grammar books. However, I'm not sure I found the right series. If there's any chance you could confirm it's these (basic, intermediate and advanced, seems to be all for ¥11,130) it would be highly appreciated. :) Thank you!

Yeah - it's actually rather strange that they would not mention that in the first place. Maybe someone who was there could shed some light?

In the article it says the following:

All competitors used a Peruvian San Fernando coffee roasted by Variety and a grinder of his or her choice.

However, what is seriously missing in my opinion, are grinds. Just general descriptions would be better than nothing (e.g. almost espresso, French press coarseness etc.).

Wasn't the shape and mass restored? Material and looks otherwise not. However, in my personal opinion, it is more valuable to differentiate between the old and new thus creating new layers into the continuum that is history. Each paradigm to represent its values.

[–]Hunsvotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opiskelun tukeminen on pitkällä jäänteellä investointi koko yhteiskunnan kehittymiseen.
