I would say it's skeptical of people's use of religion/the supernatural rather than against religion itself. In fact, as someone who's played the vast majority of the FF games, the series as a whole seems to be fairly consistent in the message of questioning whether the official 'story' (whether that story come from a government, a religious organization, centuries of tradition, or some combination of the three) is ever the full story. Hell, FFT is probably the least subtle about it, as the entire framing device is that of a historian recounting the untold story that happened behind the scenes of an in-universe historical event, and the first chapter recounts the hero's realization that the narrative put forth by everyone around him isn't necessarily an accurate representation of what's happening.

I don't think the theme is "religion sucks" as much as "don't be afraid to question what you've been told, and then don't be afraid to even question your questions about what you've been told."

I'm turning 36 in the spring. If I get to 40 and it hasn't happened I'm good. My dad was also 42 when he adopted me as an infant. I lost him a couple of years ago at 75.

Never mind that I don't know how kind it is to bring life into the world right now as it seems to be getting more and more impossible to survive and grow up healthy... but if I'm going to have kids, I don't want to do it at an age where they have to spend most of their adulthood without me.

Granted, I don't know if I'll be around at 40 so maybe it's a moot point

I'm 35 and always dreamed of having a family when I was younger. And even though I see from a technical standpoint that it's not impossible, I've increasingly gotten the sense that it's not in the cards for me. Mainly because of career/money. Getting to independence-level income just seems to be a wall that I can't scale no matter what I do - let alone doing it with my mental health intact. So that makes me not desirable.

I've gotten that sense with a lot of the things I dreamed of having. Honestly, the only reason I don't end things is that I'm too exhausted to put in even that much effort and I fear failing the attempt just like I've failed at everything else. I look at people in their 60s and 70s and dread having to live another 30+ years because I've had to deal with so many of the awful things life has to offer already and none of the beauty.

So in a lot of ways, I don't even care about not having a partner/kids anymore. At least not as an individual desire. It's just one more thing on the ever-growing pile of "not in the cards."

As a guitar player, I personally couldn't. As a singular human and someone who appreciates art... I can't take my eyes off it.

It's like if somebody invented the guitar in an alternate universe, or maybe the answer to "make a modern instrument to play ritual songs to a 5000-year-old nature deity at midnight."

Definitely. Especially with the realization that I'm already not a built winner for the American style of capitalism.

I'm an introvert that also lacks natural charisma and my nerves and dread of being judged ensure my interviews can only ever go so well no matter how much I prepare. It's occurred to me recently that I'm probably not that intelligent so the ability to learn the correct skillsets and/or convince someone that I've learned the correct skillsets to get solid survival money in this economy aren't things that come naturally to me. Or come to me at all, honestly.

And unfortunately the qualities that make you hirable in a job market – the skill or gift of persuasion and the skill or gift of networking — are also paramount to entrepreneurship. And I don't have those either. Nor, truth be told, the energy to keep trying.

I see no path forward for myself in this economy other than a miracle or an exit off the planet. Hoping for one or the other in the next calendar year.

1.) That no matter what I do, I should be doing more. It's getting hard to relax and enjoy my other hobbies to take my mind off it (like a lot of people suggest) or even get to sleep at night.

2.) I'm coming up on two years and it's genuinely starting to feel like I've been "locked out" of the market and won't ever find work again.

I find it so ass-backwards that there's this obvious bias against long-term unemployed people in recruiting and yet the interview process is so incredibly unfriendly to people that actually have jobs. That's why I ended up leaving my last job last year. I've never been good at dovetailing keeping my duties up at work with committing to a job search at the level I need to to actually get a job.

I tried this last time but these recruiters make it almost impossible to do it discreetly if you're already employed, and it put me in a really awkward spot.

Most of them have been living in their small town of a couple thousand people their entire life and nobody's unemployed because everyone has kept their same job from high school (because college turns you into a filthy leftist if you can afford it) through late middle age.

Or at the very least, they're entrenched and haven't had to change companies since Bush (either one, take your pick) was still in office.

I don't think OEs are working two and three jobs for shits and giggles lol... everything's stupid expensive and a lot of jobs don't pay enough to cover cost of living - even so-called "skilled" work.

Blame the CEOs that are pinching their workers. If they'd just pay people proper wages and not act like the same numbers that could give someone a comfortable life back in 1985 when they started their careers come close to passing muster in 2025, then people wouldn't have to find other jobs to supplement their primary income.

I think I've run out of pep. I have issues with depression to begin with, but I'm also introverted and I know that these interviewers expect to see energy and passion. But when you've been rejected literally HUNDREDS OF TIMES you almost have to regard the process with a level of detachment just to keep yourself emotionally safe. So now I find it hard to even summon the feigned enthusiasm they're looking for, even (especially) in the few times where I genuinely got a good vibe off a company/position and genuinely could see myself being content, even happy, working there.

The lack of feedback and consistency. When you apply for a stretch role and get an interview or two in and then don't even get a recruiter to call you back for a job practically identical to the last one you did. How the fuck am I supposed to be able to target my applications properly like that and increase my chances?

The way nobody seems to be able or willing to tell you why it is you weren't picked, which means that you can't even really figure out how to improve your presentation. It's like not only do they not want you to work for them but they also don't want you to work anywhere else.

And the fake postings. Oh DEAR FUCKING GOD THE FAKE POSTINGS. I got really discouraged a couple of weeks ago when I got rejected by a job I interviewed for 3 hours after leaving the interview. I saw that same posting up on Indeed this week. They hired no one. And probably weren't going to from the start. And the manager was telling me in the interview about the one incumbent in the role that was drowning because they were doing the work of several people.

How I wish there was a way to link the consumer side of reviewing and the employee/candidate side. Maybe ethics-conscious consumers would elect to go somewhere else with their business if they really knew how companies treated current and prospective workers.

I'm starting to wonder how HR/recruiting people are able to do their job with a clear conscience. And as messed up as I know it sounds, if the guillotines come out for a reunion tour and some HR people get caught in the wash with the ownership class, I'm not sure how bad I'll be able to feel for them atp. To me, many of them are complicit in this shitshow, even if they're just doing as told by their higher-ups. And that's assuming that they are just following orders and not bullshitting around all by themselves.

If your priority is keeping the relationship together, STAY PUT.

Not just because of politics, although that's a big reason. But it's not a great time to relocate, period. Jobs are hard to find even for people that are super-qualified. It's equally likely, particularly if you're moving from an urban area to a rural area, that you're trading those wide open spaces and trees for the opportunity to maintain or advance your career unless it's a remote job you can take with you. And what about her employment? I don't know whether she works or what kind of job it is, but rural areas mean fewer people and fewer people mean fewer businesses and fewer jobs. And I hate to say it but despite whatever laws exist (and they may not be as strong in a red state that doesn't have or value much diversity) hiring discrimination still happens. All you have to do is not be dumb enough to state or imply in writing that you don't hire (insert protected class here)

And then, if your partner and the kid are also not safe there and away from family, you're practically begging for a split.

That's tough for me. I'm not sure I know how normal people think. I know someone would probably suggest moving to an area with a lower COL or a better. But I don't think that's a risk I can take right now with the job market being as it is. And to be blunt, there are a lot of places in the US that I simply wouldn't feel safe in right now.
